6/6/09 - Great Woods - *OFFICIAL THREAD*

I think Trey’s guitar solo is always neat in Heavy Things… DIG IT live

the guy at the end of contact jumped up on stage and made a hero out himself. think the guy from island jam during loving cup in 98

After listening to this show, I feel like we’re ready for a… Roses Are Free tonight! I feel it.

or…a CARINI

wow last time fluffhead, hood, and possum in the same set was 7/1/94.

it’s weird that trey is having such a tough time with the mr. minor section of hood.

Totally agree about Mr. Miner section of Hood. It’s as if he doesn’t realize he’s doing it wrong. I was slightly bummed that he flubbed that again. Oh well, he’ll get it eventually!

That said, Great Woods 6/6/09 was a wonder to behold. My wife at one point turned to me and said, “the grin is back.” and at another point, “Good to have Phish back.”

Complain about whatever you want … PHiSH '09 is good stuff, period.

Had the pleasure of clevername’s company once again, and with us were my sweet lady Diana, and our friend Travis … Travis was … um … I guess um … trying. And my lady wasn’t in good spirits, was troubled by her thoughts, and Eric/clevername, feeling responsible for Travis, was having a tough night. An interesting combination of brain waves to be sure.

Myself, I was determined to enjoy my night and did exactly that. I danced more than usual, and I soaked it all right in. Turned out basically okay too.

Personal highlights:

  • new songs. Love hearing them play new stuff - “let me lie” & “stealin time” were both cool songs, so glad to hear it.
  • Golgi.
  • Fluffhead.
  • Sparkle.
  • Heavy Things (Trey: stop staggering the melody like that. :-))
  • Did I say “Fluffhead” already?
  • SoaMule - Diana really wanted to hear this one tonight!
  • Nothing < beautiful tune, totally down with that one

It was such a fun night. I’m glad to say that, because we had some challenges.

The cops kicked us out of our PAID lot. We paid $15 to park in a private lot, and the cops kicked us out around 5pm. It was this tiny lot, and there was zero trouble. Still can’t quite figure that out, but whatever. I tried to reason w/them, citing the 6pm doors open time, but … you know. Like they’d care.

So we headed for the main lot. When we got there, we decided to get some dinner for me and Diana, and so we headed thru the lot, and immediately found a) veggie burritos that rocked, and b) my friends from Waterbury that hire me for their parties ever summer  !!! We chilled with those guys for a while as Travis wandered around scoring drugs and hugs & kisses from anyone willing to share. Travis is the type of guy you need to worry about if he’s consuming substances, so that really hung over us a bit. Ultimately, aside from keeping us waiting for him for a long time after the show, his acid was bunk and he puked up the molly, so he was kind of okay.

Can’t complain too much about that factor though … he bought us all grab bags, which were a really cool lot thing I’d never seen before in any lot. My grab bag had a CDR of Fenway mp3s, a squirt gun, temp. tattoos, bubble gum, a marker, … & my wife’s grab bag had pixy stix in it.

It was pretty chilly all night and the cops kicking us out of the lot made me space out on grabbing the warmer clothes I’d brought, so we were chilled all evenin.

The band made everything okay … there were a few jams where Trey was the owner of all things guitar, he was really on. Fish had me laughing because his fills were so gnarly. The sound was great, although Mike and Fish aren’t as defined in the mix as they once were … too bad the sound isn’t as perfect as 2004, because the playing is 100 x better.

I found that even when they played a song I’m not crazy about, I was into it anyway.

Another great Great Woods Phish show.

Even though I left OlfactoryHue’s phone number on my desk at home. And no matter how many times I scanned the crowd for a blue fairy or a blue cordoroy hat, I couldn’t find Hank or Carrie.

Diana and I dropped Travis & Eric at their car & headed to Cape Cod, where we checked into our motel at about 1:45 am … we live pretty close to Mansield, but we took the opportunity to get away overnight & celebrate our anniversary. Unfortunately, I had car trouble in the morning - dead battery. We had fun anyway. Had to cut our day a little short, but it was good times anyway.

PHiSH 3.0!!!

^Glad you had a good time hose.

Been listening to this one today…Really enjoying every aspect of 3.0. lol at Makisupa…did anyone catch the Policeman came to my CAR

can i get some love for the GW show? I see 16 pages for camden (which setlist-wise I kinda get) and only 7 for GW! I mean I know the set list looks a little awkward, but I felt like this was Trey’s breakout performance, leading him to Camden. I can definitely say that Trey is nowhere near as smoking as he was at Camden, if it wasn’t for how well he played at Great Woods. I felt liked he finally pulled everything he’s working working on sound-wise together at this show. He definitely wasn’t wasting any notes, the whale-call tone he’s been trying to perfect was used perfectly. By that I mean not overdone, picked his spots, and the whale call came in real nice. Page was shredding as well, and I love me some heady Leo. My buddy made a great comment and said, “…playing like such a gentleman tonight” haha. Mike was getting crispy, and I was very excited to catch Cactus after he destroyed my face during that Fenway YEM.

Stealing Time was awesome.
Nothing was really nice to hear, I liked the Brooklyn version.
BOTT was so tastyyy. Trey showcased some good shit during this one.
Sparkles fun, only my second show so every song is still my first time live pretty much so this was a good one to dance a little jig to lol.
Jiboo was really impressive. I’ve heard a couple crazy 00 versions, but I thought this jammed real nice.
Lawn Boy was awesome, cool to see Page come out and sing ala Hampton.
Let me Lie was nice, reminded me of Pink Floyd’s Bike, not musically…but…you get it.
Taste was sweeeet. Makisupaaaa. Very nice! Nice to hear Trey say herb and not soy milk or something weird.
Caspian set closer was pretty nice as well.
Second set was just out of hand for me.
Seven Below has one of my favorite riffs ever and Trey nailed it. Page has the sweet clav solo, which was awesome. The jam, I don’t know why I’ve read bad reviews, but I thought it was pretty good.
FLUFFHEAD! Wow…never thought I’d catch one…thought it was gonna get shelved after Hampton for awhile, and wow did this one rage! Much tighter than the Hampton version, Clod was amazing, The Arrival, Bundle of Joy, it was all so surreal. Scent was soooo awesome. Love me some Page on that shit, WOW does he rage piano! So much more blown away seeing it done right in front of my face!
Heavy Things wasnt bad. Trey once again suprised me with some nice jamming on this.
First Harry Hood, and I was so pumped. No comment on the Mr. Miner part…I’m trying to now retrain my brain to ignore Trey during that and focus on that crunnnnchyyyy Gordon effect. The jam was amazing. I now know…thats all I’ll say.
Possum to follow?! Are you serious?! This set was now on unreal status. Three of Phish’s oldest and nastiest songs in one set? I was blown away. The Possum was was fire! Trey got back to old form again one this one too and was ripping licks off everywhere!
Bug was very fitting. Another great tight jam by the guys.
Contact was more of an experience than just a song haha. First off, it was probably the shortest encore break ive ever seen. Page was quite gentlemen-ly on this one lol. Then things got niceee and funky on the breakdown. Trey and Mike couldn’t get the wave synchronized, but they were getting a good laugh out of it lol. Awesome banter Then to wrap it all up, the infamous stage-walker comes up and just strolls across the stage haha. No antics, no fist pump, just a casual walk it seemed like. Then Trey paid homage with the “Let’s hear it for that guy!” And yeah, “that guy” did miss the next song, and man does that suck beacuse the Julius was shred sessions. They were raging so hard, awesome closer!
Second show down, I’m on hiatus til August.

Hiatus…lol…man 2009 rules haha!

;D

Definitely a great show. So far this tour I think it seems like each show is better than the last.

i was not a fan of how the GW venue was run, cops were dicks. We got there at 12, as we had to leave our motel room at 11 am, they made us park in the way back, so when the show was over we had the longest wait to get out and we were trying to make it back to NJ in good time, but lost 2 hrs sitting around in the lot after the show b/c we couldn’t go anywhere.

no offense to those of you who like this venue but I don’t think I’ll be going back to this one

music was ok this night, felt kind of disjointed though, the flow of the setlist just didn’t do it for me. got to meet page before the show.

a friend of mines brother had good pav seats that he traded to me in return for my not as good pav seats so it was cool to be up close for one of my 4 shows

i think after the night before with all the rain and stuff I just wasn’t in the best spirits going into this show

im assuming your not a GW regular and parked in the free parking lot of GW. Next time, pay the 30-40 bucks and park in the private lot, right before the main lot. No cop problems there at all, after the show had time to grill and was on the highway in under 45 minutes. Don’t park in the main lot anymore, its a disgrace what the new mangement and local cops have done to it. My last time parking there was for Clapton last summer, and I will never NOT park in private lot ever again. I hear they don’t even allow solo cups in the main lot anymore. Thats WEAK! Do yourself a favor, and park in the private lot, split the cost with some buddies, be chill, and your lot expierence will flourish. Plus, you weed out alot of the non-regulars this way, and are just left with mainly heady fans

My thoughts exactly! everything you said I agree with.

^read my response in the post above yours…

I was agreeing with everything he said, not just the parking lot situation. But still, I wouldn’t pay 30-40 bucks to park in a private lot.

yeah we could have paid to stay in the vip lot area, but wasn’t about to drop $20 each on it, there was only 2 of us, we paid that much for our room the night before, albeit a shit hole room

the thing i learned was to not get there that early as your a target b/c it’s obvious your on tour, at least thats what it seemed as most of the license plates parked near us where not MA plates, and the cops harrased all of us, there were illegal searches going on, kids calling the ACLU and shit, but we had no trouble, in the end… the bennet acres campground next to Star Lake was much worse than GW’s, if what had happened in bennet acres had happened in GW, my buddy would have gotten a $100 fine and been sent on his way instead of the 16 hr jaunt through the PA law system and close to $3k spent by me to bail his ass out of jail, luckily I get all the $ back some from him the rest from the bail bond company once his court stuff is all settled

I’ll tell you what… I really like the JB set up… right on the water, had no issues in the lot, shakedown was a nice little set up, traffic wasn’t an issue, the sound inside the venue was pretty good, heard it wasn’t so hot if you were in the stadium seating, but I really dug JB and will def go back if they play there again

sorry this had nothing to do with the music of GW, my highlights of GW would be the 7 below/fluffhead/lawn boy  / hood

Again, my thoughts exactly.
