for anyone who was there, and saw mike and trey dualing on the rocks, that was one of my top memories of conventry.

I have recently come to think that the soundboard recording gives some insight into what the feeling was like during the last few days within the band. right as fish hits the first drum notes of the song, i think i hear trey say “uh uh” like “no” , and somebody else is like, “uh ha” like “yes”. and then when trey trys to show mike a “sexy” bass line, does mike say, “eww, sexy” as if making fun of him?
take a listen and tell me what you all think.
I hear what u mean with the first drum notes…but not with the “sexy bass” lines. I think by the time they played Hood, the band was just done with that night. Poor playing and a really messed up Trey must have pissed off everyone. I remember watching them on the rocks (they were a few feet from me) and Mike just seemed upset by the way things were going. Trey was messed up…really messed up. It was cool to have them so close to us but you could tell Mike was carrying Trey and pissed about it. Day 2 was better…well kinda.
That moment really did epitomize the weekend. You could tell they just really wanted to get on and end the night, but at least Trey was having some fun. But the whole thing felt like a buildup to a funeral and a totally serious thing. Trey saying “just bear with me because this is my night to talk” and all that shit like tomorrow is going to be dreadful. That’s the feeling I got.
As far as Hood goes, I thought it was one of the better songs of the weekend once it got going, with the crowd singing the last verse, feelin’ good about Hood.
I totally agree with you guys, especially taboot. Mike was definitely upset at how crappy that show had gotten.
I’ve got the soundboards for most of that tour. There’s that chatter going on in all of the shows.
There’s also the point at Coventry where they are giving the sob speech, and they’re taking turns talking (alliteration not on purpose) and Trey says to Mike “Do you want to say something?” After that, it sounds like Mike says “no” then Trey says “Oh, come on!” and then Mike decides to talk. I think its sort of fun hearing them decide on what songs to play, but its also a constant reminder that they had no setlist planned before the show and thus, didn’t practice!!!

just listened to that hood and i gotta say trey’s speech and the first ten minutes of the song make me sad … what a terrible ending to the greatest band ever … i wonder what mike, page, and fish must have thought during that weekend …
now it’s the crowd chanting … that at least puts a smile back onto my face …
to be honest i can’t stand listening to that hood. once trey starts his melodic solo, supposed to be beautiful and great, but he hits a bunch of wrong/sour notes and i feel like that jam goes absolutely nowhere…
and you can tell Mike HATES the idea of going out on the rocks, like “trey, why are you doing this to us, this is a TERRIBLE idea!!!”
I agree. I don’t see why some people love this hood so much. I think all of the summer 04 hoods are lacking
especially coventry… I mean after listening to it, those shows were so rocky and emotional. To me at a phish show if all the songs are good it makes individual songs much better, because they flow so much better. You really know when they are on. Yea maybe people like it, but that weekend was so emotional for the band and trey was pretty sloppy so it undermines all of that, for me at least
a tough weekend to critique really. there were so many factors/influences that play’d a part in the less-than-fluid sets and poor execution of most songs.
The final wretchin dying breaths of a great band, I’l wait for the resurection HOOD thank you
Bad Hood! Not Michael Jackson Bad but truely aweful bad.
^ spot on. thank you!!!
I still have not listened to any of Coventry. I was there and I know how emotional it was. I just for some reason can’t listen to the last show. It gets me upset to think about it.
^ me too. I’ve listen to some pieces of it, but I really never have the urge to listen to it, I just skip over it in my book.
I had a friend this weekend ask me to burn him a copy of Coventry, for he hadn’t heard any of it yet…My response to him was “your not missing that much man.” I do think though that any person who’s serious about their phish collection should have these show’s along with whatever else their looking for. I enjoy having the weekend on disc to look back and reflect on some of the special moments that took place. That’s pretty much what I have to say about the Hood. I enjoy certain moments from this version but nothing out of this world.
I’m glad I don’t relate the emotions from these two shows with the emotions I have for say “So Many Roads” from the last GD concert…There two totally different situations that mean different things to me. Big difference being that eveybody from Phish is still alive…and so forth…Not sure why i’m rambling about all this but so be it I guess. Maybe it has someting to do w/ my dis-like for reading post about “Trey’s soooo messed up; Trey did this; Trey’s to blame…blah blah blah…” I think peeps need to give him a break and accept Phish on all 4…I think a lot of things were a group effort; NOT just Trey…
^ Re-reading that 2cd part and it’s really confusing…
Should have been two seprate thoughts… My dislike for assumptions about trey and trey bashing… The other part being about last shows and last performances and what they mean to me…Sorry for confusing anybody.
^ no worries man, i gotcha. i agree though, trey gets so much put on him, mainly because we know the tunes so well that any flub we pick up on, and there were so many that weekend by him that it’s very easy to use him as the scapegoat for the whole thing. wrongfully so? probably…
Curtain in the wrong Key…Nuff said.
I havent heard coventry since i was at the shows. there are certain things that i remember being good, but for the most part, it was not the greatest playing. But how could it be? it was very hyped up, and emotions were running very high for everyone, the band was playing for the last time, and people were being turned away at the gates. I remember thinking "please, trey, just shut the hell up and PLAY!"i remember he told us during hood to see if the jam was better if they were closer to the audience, and to discuss it with our friends later on that night. Ive still yet to hear any discussion on this matter.
coventry memories:
jams=pretty decent
any song with a set part=disaster they should have just ‘blown off steam’ the entire show, IMO
mike=MVP
maybe someday ill get around to listening to it on cd, but i prefer to remeber it in the moment.
