A cappella songs

Do you think Phish will bust out any of their a cappella covers this year? It’s surprising how long most of them have been absent from a show:

(last time played)

  • Sweet Adeline - 8/1/99

  • Hello My Baby - 12/5/99

  • Amazing Grace - 10/3/98

  • Carolina - 3/1/03

  • The Star Spangled Banner - 7/25/03

  • Freebird - 12/29/98

^ The last acapella Freebird must have been on the New Years run in 98. That 00 one was electric with big mamma!

^
Yup, I didn’t see any in the 99 setlists.

But I’m sure you already knew that.

Huh, I never realized that the a cappella songs were basically non-existant PH.

I don’t really care if they bust them out this year or not. They don’t do much for me.

The bigger the venues they play, the less effective these songs are.

they did “the star spangled banner” on 7/25/03 in charlotte nc.
i like the acapella songs. adds some variety to the show and they don’t take too long.

^oh ya I forgot about that one. I too enjoy the break–doing something different, all that.

But I can see why it became more and more rare

Thanks for the correction, B. I’ve never heard that electric one!

I forgot about that one. You’re right, an a cappella song is not going to eat up a set!

I was wondering about a possibility at the Fox Theatre this summer…

I don’t know, I think the band getting up there together and belting out something is good.

I’d much rather hear an a cappella song to end a set than Character 0.

^Really? I don’t know, I’d rather hear Trey shred than hear a rendition of “Hello My Baby”.

Caught 2 “Freebirds in 93”

^ Nice. A friend of mine’s 1st show was at Red Rocks, 8/20/93, and he said the song that will forever be burned into his memory is that “Freebird” encore.

^You can here me yelling it on the soundboards of that show. Front row Mike. He even gave me a nod before they went into it. I heard it earlier that summer at Meadow Brook. I used to yell “play Freebird!” In Spring '93 at Ann Arbor. Then they debut it in Indiana? Ohio?. 2 or 3 days before coming back to SE Michigan. I’m not taking credit but there is evidence. I met some kid at Meadowbrook who remembered me from his tapes of Ann Arbor. I don’t yell at shows too much anymore…Unless the pause in D.Sky gets too long and my skin starts to crawl.

i was there on 3/1/03 - great show, loved that a cappella. unfortunately, i was 14 and had only heard a couple studio albums and “a live one.” but that show did it for me - it was never the same after that. anyway, maybe another “carolina” in ashevillle?

man, i never get tired of hearing people say stuff like that!
i was at that show too. good times. i saw them do a “carolina” in south carolina in greenville in 1998 as well. awesome show. 2nd set had a great wolfmans, slave and a fluffhead with bundle of joy lyrics. and a four song encore with some acoustic tunes.

considering that asheville is a smaller place i’d say there’s a very good chance they do “carolina” there.
