A day in the life of OKP members... pictures

I really like maps.

Lake County, Illinois (Waukegan highlighted)

Waukegan Park District map

Last Friday I went to check out Yeoman Park. There is no parking lot. This place is right across the street, and there was plenty of parking available. Now I know where to buy all my holy cards and other assorted religious items to add to my pious, Christian lifestyle.

Cross the street and avoid the construction…

A nice little stream and ravine run along the West side.

Some local wildlife had to mark their territory:

Sweet…a way across:

Just up the hill the street ends at a sidewalk that goes across a bridge and into a park. Not a bad street to live on in Waukegan, Illinois.

This place has great sandwiches. The park is right down the street, so it wasn’t hard to decide what to have for lunch.

You nailed it with that sandwich. I’ve just eaten but that’s making me hungry.

HOAGIES!

While I was working out in the front yard today, I figured I try to capture the grief my cat is getting lately from a pair of mockingbirds defending their nest in a nearby spruce. The cat could care less about their nest but continually harrass her whenever she walks in the front of the house.

The picture in the top right is my favorite. You can just imagine what that bird is saying in mockingbirdese.

That sneaky slut

Here’s an update to the local mockingbird story…

Yesterday afternoon after I cleaned up from the day’s work, I stepped out of the front door to find one of the mockingbird chicks floundering around by the curb in front of my house. It had jumped outo of its nest, which has to be about fifteen feet up in that blue spruce, and was squawking its head off on the sidewalk while its parents were freaking out all around it.

Not really knowing what to do except that there are at least six cats within a two house radius that would love a little mockingbird appetizer before dinner. So I scooped the little sucker up and placed him in a cardboard box which I tied inside the spruce tree hoping the parents would continue to tend to it.

They did until the little moron jumped out of that makeshift nest another six feet to the ground. This time I found a deeper plastic pail which I placed him in and tied him a little higher up into the tree. I kept an eye on it and I guess it was steep and slippery enough to keep him from jumping out. His parents also began stopping by the pail to bring him food.

I didn’t have time to check to see if he was OK this morning or whether he jumped out again last night and was picked up by one of the cats. There didn’t seem to be any tiny bird feathers around on the ground, so I have to assume all was still OK with him.

I thought I’d show you guys some pix from the show this weekend.

Marketing, Marketing, Marketing- someones gotta pay the bills!

HUGE Crowd all night! I sold out the Double Door and there was a line outside all night long. My boss loves shit like this!

Russian Circles RULES! Everyone on this board should check these guys out. Especially if you like instrumental metal. Which I suppose appeals only to me and Bhuji! Maybe someone out there has a little heshen in them!

so a couple days ago i drove on up to my dad’s house in Titusville which is about 3 hours up the coast from Ft Lauderdale and located right across the intercoastal from Cape Canaveral: home of the Kennedy Space Center. Friday saw the first shuttle launch since December and of all my life living in Florida, i’ve never seen a shuttle launch up close, although you can kind of see them on a clear day from down here but its just not the same.

and it was the shuttle Atlantis; the first shuttle to launch after my birth over 20 years ago. So that was kind of cool too.

the crowd at the park down the street from my dad’s house. That’s the space center on the other side of the water. The town of Titusville lives for launches.

me and the Captain

my dad and brother

the Captain pointing out that he can’t see the launch pad, although he claims that the bridge over there “is the fucking launch pad bro. I was born at night but it wasn’t last night.”

Blast Off!

(note: i took most of the pictures of the shuttle not even looking at the camera. I was watching the launch for myself and kind of accidentally took these)

set the controls for the heart of the sun

my dad loves him a space shuttle launch

gone. out of this world in about 5 minutes.

it was insane. Like nothing else i’ve ever seen. While its happening i couldn’t even think about it but it all hit me right after it dissapeared out of the atmosphere and became a star, “Damn, that was some mother fuckers going into outer space! Holy shit!” and when we got back to the house we watched the video files on the NASA channel; all the angles. Just the whole idea of space travel is crazy, and watching it happen in person is intense.

Cool beans! Was it loud?

Is your uncle a pirate or something?

Or his name really The Captain?

They looked like they were several miles away. And if it was ungodly loud, surely he would have mentioned it.

Nice Jaw!

The only time I was able to see a shuttle launch my mom wouldn’t let us.

She wanted to eat dinner. >:(

I’m still pissed at her and that was like 18 years ago.

Jaw, best pics ever. That is so cool that you went and checked that out. Titusville lives for launches, eh? That sounds (and looks) like a good time. Dad, uncle, brother…good company. Very nice.

Jaw: I went to a space shuttle lauch this weekend.
Ghost: I went to the grocery store this weekend.

Hey, I went to the laundromat and Dairy Queen, too.

answers for

Neil: for the first minute or so you couldn’t hear anything but then all of a sudden there was this intense rumbling niose that only grew and grew. It wasn’t piercing loud but everything was shaking.

William: yes, my uncle is a pirate. His real name is not the Captain but he was the Captain of long lining swordfish boats for a couple decades till he shattered his spine, so now we just call him the Captain because that’s just his name now.

Cool.

I want to be a shrimp boat cap’n.

Capt. of a long lining swordfish boat?

Man, that sounds like tough work.
Those things don’t like to be catched.
I’ve seen some film and they put up quite a fight.

^ That is too too cool.

I love Space and everything to do with it and have never even come close o seeing a launch - definitely one thing to do before I die. i visited the Space Centre just last year and it was awesome - though it probably pales next to a lift off.

I say it again: Awesome!

Fone: What happened to the mockingbird chick?

Yeah!

Come on Fone, we need an update.

Did it survive or did your cat eat it?
