Academy Awards

Any Interest in the Academy Awards tonight? Any predictions for winners of the big categories? Has anyone seen any of the movies nominated for Best Picture? I just picked up Michael Clayton, but have yet to watch it. Just curious if any of these movies are must sees.

I’m thinking Daniel Day Lewis will take home best actor and that movie will win Best Picture. Just a hunch. Seems like there’s alot of buzz around hime and this movie. As for the others I don’t have a clue.

Here are my predictions for this evening!

Best Adapted Screenplay-Joel & Ethan Coen/No Country for Old Men
Best Original Screenplay-Diablo Cody/Juno
Best Supporting Actor-Javier Bardem/No Country for Old Men
Best Supporting Actress-Ruby Dee/American Gangsta
Best Actor-Daniel Day Lewis/There Will be Blood
Best Actress-Julie Christie/Away from Her
Best Director-Paul Thomas Anderson/There Will be Blood
Best Picture-Juno

The only pick i made that i doubt is Adapted Screenplay in which i will not be surprised if PT Anderson wins over the Coen’s!

I haven’t seen any of the movies. None of them much appeal to me. I’ll probably rent Juno and no country for old men when it comes to dvd. Half the time academy nominated films are melodramatic poop chutes. Thats my pathetic pessimistic take on the whole thing. I can’t believe Transformers isn’t in there! What about Pirates! What about Harry! :stuck_out_tongue:

Here are my predictions:

Best Adapted Screenplay-Joel & Ethan Coen/No Country for Old Men
Best Original Screenplay-Diablo Cody/Juno
Best Supporting Actor-Javier Bardem/No Country for Old Men
Best Supporting Actress-Cate Blanchett/I’m Not There
Best Actor-Daniel Day Lewis/There Will be Blood
Best Actress-Marion Cotillard/La Vie en Rose
Best Director-Coen Brothers/No Country for Old Men
Best Picture-Atonement <- Shouldn’t win, but think it will.

For what is probably the 5th or 6th year in a row I haven’t seen any of the movies.

I’m just not a movie aficionado. I never “go to the movies” and I rarely watch them at home. And I posted in this thread specifically so I could use the word “aficionado.” And yes, I did have to look it up.

fuck the oscars.

except the Coen Bros rule! and Javier Bardem rules! yaaaa

When Marion Cotillard won the best actress she was a ripe sexy thing wasn’t she!

None of this year’s movie really interest me. I’m looking forward to the new Indy tho… which probably won’t get a single nod from the academy except for something like sound and costume design.

I normally avoid all award shows yet I got sucked into this thing for an hour or two. I’ve gotta say that i heard of maybe 2% of the movies in this thing, with Old Men being 1% of that. Even most of the actresses and actors seemed new to me. Casey Affleck? Ben’s brother??? WHHAAAAA??

And seriously, why is it so LOOOONNG. I went to bed at 11:30…I couldn’t take it anymore.

Stevo

My favorite stretch of Best Picture award winners is definitely 1984-1994.

Amadeus, Platoon, Rain Man, Silence of the Lambs, Unforgiven…

Good shit right thar.

indeed, 84-94 was pretty prime time for big movies

dances with wolves

1990 is a farce! Wolves>Goodfella’s ::slight_smile: ??? ::slight_smile: ???

Don’t forget Ghost.

dances with thongs.

Bongs 'n Dongs.

don’t know why i wrote that.

it would be a good title for a gay stoner porn movie i suppose.

maybe it would even win some kind of award at a gay porn awards ceremony.

i would follow it up with Dreads 'n Heads. and i’m talkin penis heads here, penis heads.

bye.

It can’t be as bad as the English Patient winning it not too long ago. Holy crap. That’s the best we had to offer?

Here are the films it beat:

Jerry McGuire (WTF?)
Fargo (LOVED IT)
Secrets and Lies (NEVER HOID OF IT)
Shine (NEVER SEEN IT)

Yeah, I saw McGuire, Shine AND Fargo and any of those (even the Cruise movie) had to have been better. Just a horrendous travesty. That’s as bad as Jethro Tull winning the metal award over Metallica that one year.

Stevo

You guys seriously think Jerry F’n McGuire is better then The English Patient?

Wow.
I don’t know what to think of that.
I seriously question your judgment in what makes a movie good.

Are you a Scientologist as well? :stuck_out_tongue: j/k

The fact that McGuire was even considered one of the best movies is ridiculous.
Over acted as well as such a bubble gum story.
“You complete me!” ::slight_smile:

But I digress.

Fargo, yes, better then the Patient.
That story was so original and modern.

Shine,…well… there is an argument for it.

But if you actually WATCHED the English Patient then I’d consider your opinion Stevo.
I love how you make statements on things you have actually no idea about.

Ralph Fiennes is a fantastic actor and delived a great performance.
FAR better then Tommy Cruise did and ever will.
The women, Juliette Binoche and Kristin Scott Thomas are great and gave outstanding performances.
The plot has many story lines that are woven together beautifully, each of them poignant, and the scenery is gorgeous, as are the costumes, the direction, and the overall production.

The English Patient deserved the award.

Fargo was just to far ahead of its time.
