AFI's 10 Top 10

Did anyone else watch this last night? I’m a sucker for this sort of thing. I figured maybe a thread would get some debate going.

Here’s a link to the lists:

http://www.afi.com/10TOP10/

I thought for sure “High Noon” would be #1 in Westerns.

And how could “Once Upon a Time in America” or “Casino” not even crack the top-10 for Gangster?

“Big” crashing the party at #10 for Fantasy?

The Courtroom Drama section is pure sickness. If #1 and #2 had a fistfight, the world would explode.

Good to see “Hoosiers” at #4 for Sports but where is “The Natural?”

And the Epic list is, indeed, epic.

After looking at the list I got some MAJOR beefs.

Animation:

Where’s DUMBO?
And the fact that there is NO japanimation is a joke.
Ghost in the Shell?

Romantic Comedies:
Nothing there except Annie Hall. It should just list that 10 times.
HAROLD AND MAUDE at least pushed the boundaries.

Westerns:
Great list, but where’s The Magnificent Seven?

Sports:
I’m with you, where’s THE NATURAL?

Mystery:
Great list imo.

Fantasy:
Also a good list.

Sci-Fi:
Probably the best list on there.

Gangster:
Good list, although I would have liked to see Miller’s Crossing on it.

Courtroom Drama:
1 through 8 are pretty damn good.

EPIC:
Get TITANIC of that list and its good.

Sports is definately missing some of my favorites, namely The Program, Major League and the Mighty Ducks.

I find it strange that Fellowship of the Ring would be at #2 for Fantasy and Return of the King didn’t even make the cut, considering RotK was the one that won best film at the Oscars.

No Close Encounters in Sci Fi???

Gangsters good but I think The Untouchables or Donnie Brasco should have been on there over Pulp Fiction…Hell I think Resevoir Dogs should be in there over Pulp Fiction.

Why aren’t there more good Courtroom drama’s these days?

All excellent points! I forgot about Close Encounters and The Untouchables - 2 of my favorite movies. Reservoir Dogs, too.

There aren’t more courtroom dramas because Hollyweird is caught up in making fast-paced, exciting, special effects-driven movies. Which is fine, I guess, but I’d rather see a 12 Angry Men than an Incredible Hulk.

I probably disagree with about a quarter of the choices in each of the categories, but overall I guess they capture most of the best pictures in each.

Sports - Ug…for the last time, Jerry McGuire is NOT a sports movie!! It’s a chick flick!! Just because Cruise happens to be a “sports” agent doesn’t make it about sports. I can’t stand when people throw that in the list of sports movies. Also, Bull Durham is close to a chick flick but at least it has SOME sports in it. Also, I like Raging Bull but it’s less about sports and more about LaMotta’s relationships and life. Also, any list that doesn’t have Slapshot in it is a travesty.

Gangster - Once Upon a Time in America was terrible…I’d be complaining if it WAS on that list. I’ll agree with Casino…that should have cracked the Top Ten but the similarities to Goodfellas are Casino are very eerie especially with DeNiro and Pesci playing basically the same characters. Casino was better though…

Epics - And I’m sorry…Gone With the Wind is a four-hour love story. A FOUR HOUR LOVE STORY!! Most overrated movie ever. And Titanic is weak…just because a movie is long doesn’t mean it’s an epic. Where’s Braveheart?

Fantasy - Also, has anyone noticed you can just tune into the last half-hour of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and know exactly what’s happening? I know because I did exactly this as a kid and understood everything that happened in the movie…for the longest time I thought it was just some old half-hour Christmas Special. I can’t imagine how they stretched that thing to two and a half hours. Nice to see Groundhog Day listed…I LOVE that movie. Also, why chose Fellowship out of all the LOTR movies?..Can’t they just lump all three into one?

Romantic Comedies - And why the heck do they have “Romantic Comedies” but not just “Comedies”? It’s nice to see that most of them are older movies since most modern romantic comedies are terrible. Kudos to Harold and Maude for sure.

Who would you put in the Comedies list? I’d have to include Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Anchorman…I can’t think of two movies that make me laugh more than those two.

Mystery - Am I the only one who doesn’t get North by Northwest? It’s just not that great. Nice to see some Usual Suspects love but it should have been way higher…even more amazing that it involves Stephen Baldwin.

Sci Fi - Since when is Clockwork Orange a Sci-Fi movie? It’s just a weird movie…but not science fiction. And no Star Trek movies in Sci Fi?..Wrath of Khan should at least be represented.

Courtroom - And is To Kill a Mockingbird really about the courtroom?..That seems like just a small part of a movie and book that is about a LOT more. And no A Time to Kill? Come on, now.

Westerns - And I’m not big on Westerns but that fact that didn’t include a single one of the "Man With No Name’ movies by Eastwood is a travesty. No Fistful? No Good Bad And the Ugly? For shame!!

Anyway…

I could go on forever here, but Dirty Work, The Jerk, Caddyshack, Airplane, Top Secret, Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Fletch, Ghostbusters, Waynes World, Coming to America, Half Baked, A Fish Called Wanda (probably should have been in Romantic Comedies list), Grumpy Old Men, Big Lebowski, Office Space, What About Bob?, Dumb and Dumber, Rushmore, Team America, My Cousin Vinny, Father of the Bride, Very Bad Things, Hot Shots 1 & 2, Orgazmo, Fast Times, Dr Strangelove…hell this is the only Genre of film that I truly love and respect. Should I keep going? I could. The Gods Must Be Crazy, Encino Man, Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors, Blues Brothers, Naked Gun, Captain Ron, City Slickers, Mars Attacks…I’ll watch any of those movies any time.

I don’t think I could possibly narrow it down to 10, but maybe 100.

Hey, you left out Animal House!

You all forgot #1

Trading Places

It aint cool bein no jive Turkey so close to thankgivin.

Yeah!

^That’s more of a romantic comedy. You know, a guy and his booze.

Yeah…I left out way too many…what about Up in Smoke? Dazed and Confused? Spinal Tap? Sour Grapes (one of my favorites, Larry David written and directed)? Dead Man on Campus? Idiocracy?

I’m horrible at this, but man, I need to pick up more of these movies.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles!

Who’s Harry Crumb!

Anything with John Candy, essentially.

^ Yes! Or Steve Martin for that matter. Bowfinger is absolutely one of the most underappreciated movies I’ve ever heard of.

Yep.

Good to see “Father of the Bride” in your initial post.

Parenthood might actually be my favorite SM movie.

Crap…I forgot to mention Lebowski…just a bloody classic. And I’d take Groundhog’s Day out of the Fantasy part and put it in comedies…Murray is awesome in that.

sorry harry, but i am very glad that once upon a time in america did not make the list. I was watching goodfella’s a while back when my father said that “OUATIA” was the best gangster movie ever, so i rented it, and watched all 4 hours of that terrible / boring movie. Thumbs down

Booo-urns!

It’s slow-moving, I’ll give you that. But I liked it.

Given my personality, I could watch paint dry, though.

Clockwork Orange is definately science fiction. it is set in the future and explores the unintended consequences of mind-control. very scientific.

A Time to Kill? any movie that stars Matthew McConaughey is automatically in the running for worst movie ever.
