Am I alone in this thinking???

Granted I have a couple of beers in me as I type this but…

Is it wrong to not want to drive all the way to Virginia…spend a couple hundred dollars on tix, hotel, food, etc. when about 6-12 hours after the 1st show you can download it at etree.org(aud recording.) or at LivePhish about 2 days later. Sit in the comfort of your own abode. Drink your very cheap (compared to stadium pricing) choice of liquor and enjoy the music. Sure you don’t get the lights, overall emotion, etc.(audience recording will get you crowd noise and swells). But the chances are you will see it when more dates are announced.

This is just a thought. I realize nobody takes me seriously due to my lack of posts but I just need to chime in every once in a while.

I love you all…except…that guy!!!hee hee

im 19. ive never seen phish before. i want to be there.

i sure hope you aren’t alone in this thinking.

the only reason i listen to audience recordings is to imagine (or remember) how sweet it must have been to be there because i know what its like.

I understand. My first reaction upon hearing the announcement was “I have to be there”, but I let 24 hours pass and I thought it through. I decided that since additional dates are a given, I will see a Phish show this year, but that it’s not worth the money and hassle to be there for the reunion show, especially when I’m betting that any show in the middle of a summer tour will be better than the first show in 4 1/2 years.

So, I am hoping for some sort of simulcast, but if that doesn’t happen, I’ll listen to the AUD and see them this summer.

My opinion apparently doesn’t count to a lot of people because I’ve never seen a show, but I don’t think you can fully judge a show musically until you’ve heard the tapes. The concert experience is incredible but with a band like Phish–who do their best work live–it’s hard to judge something just on one listen. I know that I frequently change my opinion of albums after the first listen.

^I respectfully disagree…Ive walking out of some shows knowing just how epic and special they were and I couldnt wait for the tapes to find my way…

examples include 12/15/95, 12/29/96, 11/21/97, 11/22/97, 12/30/97, Island Tour, Went, 7/9/98, 8/9/98, 8/12/98, Oswego, 7/25/99, 12/11/99, 7/11/00, 9/8/00, 2/28/03, 7/29/03. 7/30/03 and finally 6/17/04

You knew while they were on that they were on…

I’m totally on board with this thinking. Even face value is unbelievable!

I took my wife and teenaged-son to see Rush last summer. It cost me $177 just for tickets. They wanted $8 for beer I didn’t even like (i passed on the beer!) … yet, the new CD Snakes & Arrows, which took much more musical energy to produce than that one concert I’m sure, cost me something like $12.99.

I’ll happily grab Hampton 3/6/9 - SBD/FLAC, straight from Phish for $12.95. If cash is tight I’ll settle for AUD for free. Certainly beats the $thousand+ I’d be spending so that I could stand in the presence of an historical moment in the band’s history.

I’ve seen Phish live several times though, so I simply do not feel compelled to be there the night they finally take the stage once again.

I sometimes wonder if I’m just getting old though. Actually, what do I think I am, freakin’ immortal? Of course I’m getting old.

I feel like I’m getting older, too.

Like now.

And now.

And now.

And now.

And now…

I think I’ll get the most fun out of my money by spending it on a trip to go see Phish with some of my good buddies…so I will

You can make money back, but not Phish shows.

That’s my thinking on the subject

I like aud recordings, sometimes more than sbds. The audience tapes are the closest representation to being there; sometimes the sbds (even some of the LivePhish ones) sound imbalanced, like either there is too much vocal or that I’m listening to the show through an IEM.

Not all auds are created equal, but there certainly is no shortage of great tapers with excellent gear out there…

And as far as being able to peg a zinger after one listen, yes it is possible. I think it helps to not be pharmed up or tripping face if you want to be able to make those kinds of assessments on the spot.

I was just thinking about this myself although not going to Hampton in regard to this Trey tour. On 2 shows near where I live I will have spent prob around 500$ w/ Hotel, Food (no fatty veggy burritos for me anymore), tix and alittle splurge for a Train ticket to get to Boston and not drive. The other day I was looking into a a week in Mexico coming in around 900$ and thought (should I spend that?). Lupos was sweet, can’t wait for Boston but Hampton mania and for me what would be the ensuing torrent of cash out of my bank account is not worth it, there are MUCH better values out there for getting some R&R then heading out long distance on tour. I guess it also helps when you have allready seen a boatload of shows.

I bet if any of you had gotten tickets to Hampton you would go and wouldn’t be talking about how you would rather have the recording and save your money. Show me one person who has tickets and isn’t going cuz they’re waiting for summer tour. Thats garbage!
C-yall in Hampton!!!

Easy there, Tiger. Back away from the ledge, it’s not worth it. Oh, who am I kidding, you’ve already jumped.

::slight_smile:

In all seriousness, what in the blue blazes of Hell are you talking about?! Who said they would rather have tapes of Hampton than actually be there? We are talking in generalities here. Would you rather those of us without tix to bitch and blame and cry? Stow that shadenfreuda.

I for one would prefer to be there, but I’m not paying more than face cuz I don’t do anal.

I hope you have a blast at Hampton, I truly do.

:-*

easy there nipper, I in no way shape or form tried for tickets and never intended on going. 02 was a different story but I guess as time goes on your priorities can change a bit.

ummm if you have tickets and hotel room, YOU SHOULD GO!

EXACTLY-You can tell when they are playing tight, they know when they are playing tight. You can feel the Energy in the room while the tapes may not be able to duplicate the energy it makes for great nostalgia.

this to me isn’t necessarily true.

i have thought that some shows i went to were just not given justice by the recordings and have been completely blown away by a recording of a show that i was at (ie: tweezer jam) that at that time, wasn’t fully aware of what i was seeing.

just my opinion

by the way … i do want to go – but ultimately cash is a factor for me.

i have seen them between 34-36 times – should i spend the money to go?? i wish i knew the answer. i live near deer creek (about 1 hour away). if i knew they were going there, this wouldn’t bother me as much. but if i go to hampton, i will have to buy tickets on ebay for way too much money and pay for my woman also.

so i am kinda torn about it. any suggestions??

btw – she has never seen them, so that could go a couple of different ways for me. but i will be meeting up with people there obv.

Nothing I see can be taken from

true, i always think that was the best phish show iveever seen after the show is over, but then after i listen to it i change my persona
