Anybody live in western SC?

So, my wife & I are pretty much sick of living in South Florida. One of those situations where it turns out it’s a nice place to visit, but wouldn’t really want to live there.

We are in the process of picking our next place to live. Western South Carolina, Pickens specifically, caught our eye.

I’m wondering if anybody out there can offer any insight into living in the region (Upstate SC: Pickens, Oconee, Greenville, Easley, Spartanburg).

The info I’ve read online is OK, but I’d like to hear from people we likely have some things in common with.

Thanks!!

i dont think we have any SC members on here.

not a one.

sorry, man.

Doesn’t Astralgruv go to school in SC?

well i’ll be.

ok…we have one. and he’s never on.

there, neil…are you happy?

Well, I guess that in and of itself says something.

How 'bout Asheville, NC? Anybody there, or know anyone there?

I lived in Charleston for a while. Its beautiful. But thats Coastal(obviously).

While I was living ther i had spent time in Columbia, Spartansburg, and Greenville.

Greenville was a nice little town, and pretty much brand new in 1998.

My wife wants the coast (she’s a scuba instructor), I want the mountains (I like to play in the woods).

Some things I’ve heard lead me to believe the Greenville area is uber conservative.

Jawbone lived in Asheville for a while, and we visited there for a weekend two years ago. Nice town, and not nearly as ‘usber conservative’ as you might think. College town with lots of theaters, art galleries, clubs, and upscale restaurants to rival anything the northeast metro areas have to offer.

We’re seriously looking into retiring to areas southeast of Asheville, maybe 30 to 45 minutes from there, Greenville SC and Charlotte NC. I think Hendersonville was a place we looked at.

Like to be near the resources of the cities, but want the laid back feel of the small town to escape to. We also prefer the mountains to the coast or the southwestern deserts. And the prices drop rapidly as you move away from the urban centers in NC.

south carolina overall is a pretty conservative state. if not one of the most conservative in the south. north carolina, especially asheville/boone would fit you (liking the mountains and all) in better shape. your wife…i dont know

Yeah, she moved down here shortly after we met from Cincinnati specifically for the diving. She’s a little freaked out about the idea of living “in the mountains”. We’re going up there two times in the next month, so hopefully she’ll get a good vibe.

Having previously lived in places like Burlington VT, Prescott AZ, and Jackson Hole WY, I’m starting to bug out down here in the concrete jungle.

My mom’s family lives in Greeneville. Talk about the Bible belt. They all went to Bob Jones University, which is, shall we say, a little behind the times.

Not a horrible area, NC is a short drive. Weather seems to be nice, hot summers, mild winters.

God bless.
