Are You Ready For Some Football! NFL 2011

I agree on this…both teams looked pretty awful in the 1st half. You can kind of tell the difference between good defense and bad offense and this just looked like the latter. Though I wouldn’t blame the second half on the power outage…the Niners D really came out like gangbusters and did whatever they wanted to that Steelers O-Line. Even when it was just 13-3, I didn’t think for a second the Steelers could come back.

And wow, Brees has two games to get only 300 more yards to break Marino’s yardage record so it looks like a foregone conclusion. I never thought that one would get broken when I saw it happen and Brees has done it easily (unless he gets hurt, I guess). Looks like Brady needs 500 yards for the record too so he’s got a chance also. Given that Favre has already taken away most of Marino’s records, when this happens I wonder if Dan will react on CBS by angrily tearing at his own clothes and screaming “I HAVE NOTHING LEFT! I HAVE NOTHING!” live on national TV. At least I hope so.

Records are made to be broken…

WOW! Crazy win by the Colts over Houston…and I picked it! I’ll admit it was a bit of desperation since I’m five behind the leader and need wins but I thought this seemed like a win…sometimes when these winless teams get one win, it kind of “breaks the seal” and they play hard (see: 2011 Dolphins). A home game against a division rival (without Wade Phillips still) and a shaky Houston offense made weird sense. Plus the second Houston clinched the playoffs, I could see them relaxing. I guess none of this matters since I’m saying it all after the fact but it’s always more exciting in these games with a pick-em contest.

Amazingly Houston has STILL never won in Indy. And apparently a 1-win team had never beaten a 10-win team before either. Either way, a crazy final drive by ole Dan Orlovsky. Very cool…stuff like that is why we watch sports. Plus, I’m pretty sure the Colts still have the #1 pick even with the tie with the other two teams…

I hopped online with 2:30 to play in the game, popped on the stream (firstrowsports.tv is suuuuuhweeet) and was treated a lovely drive by Orlovsky. Had some penalty help for sure, but exciting exciting exciting!

^I agree, very exciting with a pumped up Colts crowd.

And yeah, those three penalties helpes but two were definitely legit. The one where the guys fell into Orlovsky’s legs was weak but that’s the dumb “Tom Brady got hurt for a year so we have to make up a dumb rule without thinking about it” rule. It’s funny how all of these rules that the NFL makes to answer media pressure and to pretend they care about injuries are always the worst ones that are poorly written and never get called right.

The QB-legs rule is awful since refs always call it against guys who get pushed into the QB’s legs. The horse collar rule is awful since it’s supposed to only be called if the defenseman pulls BACK on the jersey and they always call it if you grab the uniform at all. The “you can’t hit a QB after an INT” rule is awful since you CAN hit QBs if they’re trying to make a tackle but the refs call it for any hits at all. Plus I’ve seen the refs screwing up the “diving at the lineman’s leg” rule a LOT this year and it’s not even a new rule…it’s only supposed to be called when the lineman is already being blocked by someone else but they call it anytime. Again, why do schmucks like me know the rules better than these refs?

Though the big mistake for Houston was blitzing on 3rd down and goal which ended up as pass interference. They’d been getting big pressure with just 4 guys all game and then that blitz left Tamme open and the Houston player had no choice but to commit the penalty since he had no help. Play regular coverage and Orlovsky likely wouldn’t have found anyone open. Of course, I wonder if that would have been different had Wade Phillips been calling the plays…that’s part of why I had Indy…the defensive play-calling for Houston was kind of dumb against Carolina last week too.

So the vikes cud get luck after all! I’ll be pissed if they commit to ponder and take another position. Yea its too early to judge him, but cmon, the kid sux

If the Vikes get the #1 pick, they have TWO FREAKING choices…

  1. Draft Luck and lets roll…

  2. Trade that first pick for a BOAT load of picks and rebuild! Then Roll!!

Either way they could do no wrong here…

^^Well, technically the Colts still have the #1 pick right now due to the weakest strength of schedule. But they play the Jags next week so that could be a legitimate third win for them.

Plus Vikes play Bears and Rams play the Niners. It’s gonna be weird.

And, man, it’s still hard to judge a QB who starts their rookie year…Stafford looked pretty bad his rookie year with lots of picks but had a few moments of brilliance (but only two wins). Ponder could be said to have had the same…if they get the pick, the Vikes have a tough dilemma. There’s no guarantee Luck is anything good either. Maybe trade down and go for RG3? #1 pick trades rarely happen but it’s more viable now that they have a rookie salary scale so teams would be less scared of paying #1 pick money.

 :unamused:

See, Kordell Stewart, Akili Smith, Eric Crouch etc…

Is it the Super Bowl yet? :wtf:

IT IS IN DETROIT, BABY!!

SING IT, BOYS!!

That’s the last time we’ve been in the playoffs. In 2000, Paul Edinger kicked a field goal that knocked the Lions out of the playoffs, they reacted by firing our GM, hiring Matt Millen and it led to 10 years of “oblivion” as our long-time kicker Jason Hanson called it this week. This game was the final, true, end of that damn shadow. WOOOO!

It’s funny how my negative Lions self was always assuming the worst for the team this year because I’m used to it happening. We got behind against Minnesota, Dallas and Carolina and I always assumed we were done…but subconsciously I knew our offense was good enough to come back…something I haven’t felt in years. I assumed Joe Webb would beat the Lions a few weeks ago. I assumed we would get pounded by the Chargers this week. And I was freaking about all the other games this week since the Cards, Seahawks and Bears could all steal the Lions spot if they lost their last two. I even freaked out about Denver losing today since I thought the Chargers would be “fired up” coming out since they were still alive. And each time, this team proved me wrong. They didn’t even bother with worrying about all that time-break crap and just won it today.

I don’t care about the rest of this crap with whether this team can win and about their flaws. They’ve got 10 wins and they’re in! Stafford may, JUST MAY, be the QB of the future and he was a stud today. I’m sitting back with a whiskey/coke that I’ve been pounding all day and enjoying my Christmas! Huzzah!

GO LIONS!!

Hit it, Kool and the Gang!!

Uh Oh…Saints tempt the Football Gods by running up the score to get Brees’ record last night. It’s hard to say how the Football Gods will react to this one but they frown upon running up the score. (see: the 2008 Pats losing the Super Bowl). Besides, they have another home game next week so it’s not like they HAD to do it last night for the home crowd. I wonder if the bad Football Karma will doom the Saints in the playoffs. Beware the ire of the Football Gods!!

Boo on you, media and coaches! Stafford snubbed out of the Pro Bowl in favor of ELI? Really? Who was even voting for him?..I don’t know any Giants fans who even like Eli.

Stafford: Better passer rating, better completion percentage, around the same yards, 10 more TDs, less INTs, better overall record. Ah well…he may get in anyway with Rodgers or Brees in the Super Bowl.

Though, it could be worse. Forte got in despite not playing five or six games. And Phil Rivers got in and he was arguably awful this year. But hey, we all know that the Pro Bowl is all about reputation. Even worse is breaking down the O-Linemen and other positions that people don’t pay attention to…some of those guys haven’t been good in years.

I know the Bastard likes talking to himself  (see every sports - NBA/NCAA/NFL thread around), but here are my weekends picks:

Saturday:
Cincinnati at Houston 4:30 PM
Houston should win with a stellar running game
Detroit at New Orleans 8:00 PM
New Orleans could win this game 45 to 28…
Sunday:
Atlanta at NY Giants 1:00 PM
NYG is rolling right now and that might be scary for the ATL “D”… NYG in a squeaker!
Pittsburgh at Denver 4:30 PM
Pitt, in all worlds ‘should’ win this one, but… No Starting RB, Ben is hampered and that Denver “D” is good…

Tebow beating Pitt? Sure why not. I doubt it but if there were an upset, here it is!

Wow, firings galore and even more shocking are the non-firings.

Rams fire Spagnuolo and Bucs fire Morris. Bucs probably shouldn’t have hired Morris in the first place and Spags just has had a mess and injuries to deal with…not sure if anyone could win there.

Polian and his kid are shockingly blown out of Indy. Overall, they should have done this two years ago when Polian pushed for the 14-0 Colts to tank their next two games (one at HOME) and they non-surprisingly were flat in their first playoff game and lost. Though, I guess the drafts haven’t helped. Amazingly the Colts draft better in the low rounds and getting undrafted free agents then they are at high round guys. Very weird. I wonder if this is a Luck vs Peyton thing.

Also notable was how eleven head coaches were hired in 2009 and only three are still around with one of those pretty close to being gone: Tom Cable, Mike Singletary, Jim Mora JUNIOR, Eric Mangini, Josh McDaniels, Spags, Morris, Todd Haley, Jim Caldwell, Jim Schwartz, Rex Ryan. Caldwell should be gone, some folks want Ryan gone but he’ll stay, and the Schwartz is the only one is who actually liked for making the playoffs. Amazing.

Once again, how does Norv Turner stay hired? He should have been fired three years ago. And now, starting next year, he should have been fired FOUR years ago. Chargers fans must be hanging themselves. Did their owner die and no one noticed?

Bears fire their GM and then basically push out Mike Martz. Not sure about the GM, but why do teams hate Mike Martz so much? He’s obviously got a tough personality to deal with but all he does everywhere he goes is greatly improve the offensive output of whoever he coaches and teams respond by getting rid of him. Plus there’s the Martz curse that is hitting teams that fire him. The Rams cut him off after years of success and did the “we’ll run his system without him” idea and the Rams have been a disaster ever since. The Lions had him for two years and had a huge spike of offensive output and actually won seven games his second year (their best record in years) and then the Lions fired him and had the “we’ll run his system without him” idea. They went 0-16 the next year. Now the Bears have a QB renaissance with Cutler, make the NFC title game and was on their way again this year until injuries hit and now Martz is fired again. Not sure if they’ll “run his system without him” but it doesn’t bode well for them. And you can’t say the offense was all Cutler…he’s had his share of stinker years in the past. Martz matters.

Looks like Andy Reid will come back which is good. He’s got enough success to deserve a chance to correct his mistakes.

Surprised the “fire Shanahan” hype isn’t bigger. Given how close the NFC East was, he basically sacrificed three games to John Beck after ONE bad game by Grossman and when everyone knew Beck was awful. Can’t say they would have won it but they could have been in this thing. Even funnier, he did the EXACT same thing in Denver. In 2006, they were 7-2 with Plummer. Plummer has two bad games to go 7-4 (but were still clearly in it) and he switches to a rookie Cutler who goes 2-3 and kills any chance of them making the playoffs. Just killed his whole team on one panic decision.

Oh, and Jerry Jones won’t fire himself from being GM. Nothing new there. Poor Cowboys. Maybe have the best owner and one of the worst GMs all wrapped in one.

I have to admit that I had a devilishly fun time Sunday night watching the Cowboys lose to the Giants, even though I don’t believe for a minute that the Giants are strong enough to repeat what they did in 2008. There are just too many better teams.

Of course I thought the same thing back then.

I’ve never seen a coach look as lost as Shurmur has this year. It worries me that Holmgren loves him so…

^Great point. I’ve never seen a sadder offense either. It blows me away that coaches run an offense like that and seriously think they can win anything. Reminds me of Mariucci’s run with the Lions. You just had no hope the second those guys ran onto the field.

^^And watching the Cowboys lose is fun and sad at the same time. I kind of like Romo and there are times when I even feel sorry for them…then they show Jerry Jones in the booth and I’m reminded of why it’s so enjoyable for them to lose. Giants are such a weird team…they have a number of games every year against “lesser” teams where they just come out unprepared and then they have “big” games where they look like all-stars. I could totally see them pounding Atlanta.

I can’t speak for the other teams, but I think that in the Bears’ case, it was a simple fact that Martz’s offensive scheme does not work with the talent they have. With his system, you NEED offensive line protection, and obviously the Bears are severely lacking in that catagory. But beyond that, he’s too stubborn to change his thinking as the game dictates. When it was time to slow down and run the clock, he was still slinging the ball through the air.
And this didn’t sit well with Lovie. And Lovie has final say in just about everything with the Bears. If you are on Lovie’s good side, you will get what you want/need. But if you are in his doghouse, well, you might as well pack your bags, 'cause you ain’t gonna be around for very long. And I think that, more than anything else, led to the Martz “leaving”.
The good thing about this is that it’s pretty clear that the Bears are not going to try and stick with the Martz offense now that he’s gone. They are going to bring in another OC (I’m looking at Tice to step up), and Cutler is going to thrive in a system that caters to his ability. Shotguns, roll-outs, and other things that were non-existant in the Martz system.
I must say, this is a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dark couple of months for the Bears. Good things on the horizon!

^Well stated! Martz, while an offensive wizard at times, has never set the tempo or play calling to fit his on the field talent, other than in St. Louis… He left there thinking that every team could and/or should run the same style and play calling which rarely works…

Careful what you wish for in Tice, while I thought he was “booted” prematurely here in Minnie, he was not very media savvy and had a hard time with players telling him what they thought he should do… He knows the O-Line and TE positions as well as most, but overall play calling, I am not sure he is 100% up to that yet…

Chicago effed their Offense by basically letting Kruetz walk, they effed their RB with no contract and they had no back up plan for QB, which was surprising for a team that was ready to compete for a decent playoff run. I can see your team surpassing the Lions next year and being the #2 team in the division if they suit the offense to Cutler and resign Forte… The other thing the Bears have going for them is the Vikes are looking at another down year and the Lions coach is just plain crazy and that team could be on the verge of greatness or completely losing it… I’ll pick the latter in this case…
