Bathtub Gin: 02-14-2003 vs. 07-09-2003

IMO, Bathtub Gin was THE jam during Post Hiatus.
They were killing it every night during Summer 'oo, but 'o3 brought a new beast out in the song.
The beast’s name was Mike.
Here are two West Coast versions that are guaranteed to shake your groove thing.

Yowza!

Good stuff. DEFINITELY checking both these out today.

I like the one from California!

How about a handicapped TagTeam match VS Cinci

In a cage!

Damn, I got so caught up in Oswego I forgot to play these.

Alas, will do today.

I’ve heard both, but it’s been at least 6 months. Time for a refresher course.

I think I like the Valentimes day one better

A lot of people will look at “Piper” as the THE jam of PH Phish…

…I dunno. “Piper” went some pretty kewl places, as did “Gin.”

It depends on how you like yer Phish, I guess.

Starting 2/14/03 now…

2/14/03

Trey’s got some nice playing from 7:00-7:45. Then he starts a familiar theme that I just heard the other day in, coincidentally, the 6-28-00 “Gin.” At 9:20 Mike comes in hard, and Trey starts some chording action. Page is funking it up, too. By 12:30 we’re still chugging along in typical “Gin” fashion! Trey’s playing has slowed down at this point. Not as forceful or playful as earlier in the jam. I don’t much care for it at this point. It seems to be screwing with the overall tempo of the song. Near 16:00 Trey starts to go off! A nice peak follows suit, and then at around 17:15 we hear the “Gin” theme returning.

I like the first part of the jam better, to be sure.

In the overall pantheon of “Gin’s” I’ve heard, I have to give this one a B. In terms of PH “Gin’s,” it’s a B+.

7/9/03

The opening segment of this jam is pretty typical stuff. Melodic “Gin” theme from Trey, nice board work from Page, a steady beat from Phish and a pounding baseline from Mike. It does, however, start to pick up some steam after the 9:00 mark. I thoroughly enjoy Page’s work up to this point.
Around 10:00, Trey starts chording and they start to go into a noticeably funky jam. A clear break from the “Gin”-ish type jamming they were doing occurs at around 11:45. I think they are now in type-II territory. Fishman’s drum work here is awesome, to say the least. Trey is really hitting the lower notes on his guitar during this jam. Around 14:00 he starts to get more forceful. At 15:00 the pace quickens and the jam picks up! Now we’re talking! After 17:00 more of the same frenetic jamming. But shortly after that, the bottom drops out and we go into a real slow, almost spacey-type jam. Real soft, quiet and melodic. At 24:15 Trey comes back with the “Gin” theme.

All in all a really good version. I like it just a tad more than the 2/14 version.

B+/A- version.

Who else thinks the 2/28 Gin holds its own with any other PH Gin out there???

It is a good one.

I’m not sure its my favorite, but I definately think it deserves mention among 2/14, 2/22 (which also hasn’t been mentioned a whole lot), and 7/9 for best PH Gins.

You should read my first 200 or so posts on this board, I think I talked enough about it for everyone
