From the April 14th edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education:

The Trustworthiness of Beards

By Tom Bartlett

The way you gain people’s trust is to earn it over time by repeatedly proving that you deserve it. That, or grow a beard.

A recent study in the Journal of Marketing Communications found that men with beards were deemed more credible than those who were clean-shaven. The study showed participants pictures of men endorsing certain products. In some photos, the men were clean-shaven. In others, the same men had beards. Participants thought the men with beards had greater expertise and were significantly more trustworthy when they were endorsing products like cell phones and toothpaste.

But, oddly, men with beards were slightly less effective than smooth-cheeked fellows in underwear advertisements. Apparently we don’t want Zach Galifianakis selling us boxers.

The researchers say the implications of their findings could extend far beyond advertisements. For instance, male politicians might want to consider not shaving because the “presence of a beard on the face of candidates could boost their charisma, reliability, and above all their expertise as perceived by voters, with positive effects on voting intention.”

Former presidential candidates Al Gore and Bill Richardson didn’t put down the razor until they were already out of the running. Who knows how things might have turned out if they had had the power of facial hair working for them …

Important note: The study looked only at neat, medium-length beards. You can’t just go all ZZ Top and expect people to trust you.

Maybe if it was Fall tour… gotta keep the face cool in Summer!

Already have a full beard here and have for awhile now. I do keep it well trimmed, though. So, I’m not like the dude I drive by who does the groundskeeping for the local courthouse with the dready-beard. He’s a deep forest wook. I know it.

Ben, you need the Bobby Weir moustache to go with that beard!

Well, I just shaved off all my facial hair, I had my Goatee since I was 18, so it was a shock to see my chin after all these years…

I would love nothing more than a spiffy Tour Beard, problem is, I grow REALLY BAD Beards…

I usually sport a stache, burns and a goatee, so I’m shooting for that by June…I will report back my progress…

I’ve decided I’m a September–>March beard guy. Spring/summer is clean-shaven times.

Yep, that’s my theory too.

I used to really like growing a beard, except when it got real full it was red. WTF. Plus my mustache didn’t come in as well as the other parts so it looked kinda ghey.

Yeah, I can’t really grow a good moustache like Bobby. He always gets that nice big full moustache with a curl at the end. My facial hair just isn’t that thick/full, unfortunately. I would grow one like that if I could. Bank it!

Already done, as of March of last year. I keep it trimmed short and neat so it’s not really hot in the summer or anything. And apprarently my style of beard ranks “Most Trustworthy” according to that spectrum. See?

i’ve got a Lebowski goatee right now. I plan on keeping it through the summer.

I am gonna shave my balls instead…who’s with me?

^hahaaaaaaaaaaaa thats great.

You shave your balls and I’ll shave my ass and we can donate the hair to beardless. My ass alone could cover 25 faces. Philanthropy power!

I always have a full beard, and generally the length tends to follow the length of my hair. As my hair gets longer, so does my beard, and then when I get a haircut, I trim the beard down to a shorter length.

GEE! I would be happy if my ass could cover just one face these days!

hank please have the mustache in play for the Greek shows… thank you

Remember, photos or it is not true and did not happen. OKP law for 5 years now!
