I sat down and listened to Junta in it’s entirety today. What a great fucking album. From the very start with Fee it captures you and just keeps you flowing through the whole thing. It has more classic songs than any other album (probably because it was the first but still). YEM, FOAM, Bowie, Dinner and a Movie, Contact. I could go on and on. Yes!
i just picked up a offical release of this album for 10$ at the local record store.
I have a burned version, but had to get this jem for sake of having a real version.
the art work on this record is the best imo, music too. i love how it’s so classical in nature, but has their own unique approach to it. this, is to me, their masterpiece album, the whole thing is just badass. Lawn Boy got me into Phish Junta made me love Phish
I bought a bootleg copy of the cassette back when it was out of print in 1991. I have to confess (echoing fone’s confession re: Nectar that I just read today), I liked Lawn Boy but just couldn’t get my mind around Junta at first. The songs were so long and I had no idea what song I was on half the time, since you know, cassettes have no track IDs.
My take on Phish studio:
Junta > Lawn Boy > PoN > Rift > Hoist > Billy Breathes < SotG … and the jury’s still out on how the rest goes.
Something like that.
I don’t think they ever did a better album than Junta. Each subsequent album abandoned the characteristics of its predecessor. They kept trying to improve on the previous one by hating on it. How’s that supposed to work? Nectar’s too diverse, Rift is too serious, Hoist is too light, etc. Each time they diluted their studio essence.
Can I blame Elektra?
How about the Man?
Satan, maybe?
that yem character?
bad drugs?
monetary success?
I dunno. I guess we refrain from blame, since all those other albums are still good.
Wait…are we listening to the same album here? I love Fee and a few others but I found myself having to turn off nearly half the album. If this would have been my first intro to Phish I would never have given them a second look.
Went on a long drive today, taking in the beautiful winter scenery with Junta playing. It took a while for me to relate the snow and trees to the black and white album art. I love the tempo of this album - it’s remarkable how young they were when they recorded it. And it sounds great, too! All of this adds up to Junta being my favorite as of now. What a debut…
I wish they would play YEM slowed down like they recorded it.
Great sound. I really like Trey’s guitar work, especially.
It IS amazing how young they were back then. They were my age, or younger! Have I even come close to recording/writing anything that scrapes the diamond’s surface? No.
