There seems to be many books out there about Jerry Garcia. I was wondering which one is the most informative book, that is worth reading.
I don’t know about books specifically about Jerry, but you should definately check out “Long Strange Trip” by Dennis McNally if you haven’t already read it. It’s probably the most comprehensive and insightful book about the Grateful Dead.
I have “Garcia: An American Life” by Blair Jackson. I’ve had it for almost 7 years and I usually read it straight through 2-3 times per year.
I strongly recommend it.
Garcia by the Editors of Rolling Stone is pretty good. It’s a collection of all the Rolling Stone articles published about Jerry.
Also, Phil Lesh’s book Searching for the Sound has a lot of good stories and information.
Co sign!
Don’t know the best book… I’ve read the aforementioned “Garcia: An American Life” and “Dark Star.” I’d advise you to check out a few because biographies have such different viewpoints.
Captain Trips: A Biography of Jerry Garcia by Sandy Troy
This is the best one I’ve read.
Really detailed info about his life with and without the Dead.
I believe this was one of the first complete biographies about him.
After he died that is.
The best book about the grateful dead, is long strange trip, it is very complete. Maybe alittle to complete.
Searching for the sound is also a good read about the grateful dead, it is from phils perspective, and might make you cry.
Garcia: an american life, is definatly the best book that focuses on jerry.
i’ll tell you what not to read: In the Spirit, by Wendy Weir.
it’s all about her talking to Jerry’s spirit after he died, and the message he has for the world. actually, it’s not that bad, just extrememly new-agey for my taste.
^wow, I don’t even know what to say about that.
