Best of Netflix Instant-Queue

I see a lot of people complaining about that one Facebook (cough cough phishinsky)… and well. Essentially… I have no major problem with just dropping the DVD service. I usually keep a DVD for 2 weeks before I get around to watching it, and there is nothing on DVD I really NEED to get.

So, I will be dropping to Streaming only on August 31st, and SAVING 2 bucks a month. For those must have DVD releases, my public library has quite the collection, and for the how new releases, I am able to put items on hold.

I understand the disgust, but am not put off by it at all.

Plus, I think what my solution is is what Netflix wants you to do. I remember an article I read a year or two ago that stated to mail a DVD it is 49 cents each way, plus the cost of paper and the physical DVD. To stream a 90 minute movie costs them 2 to 3 cents.

I dropped my cable once Lost finished last year, and have barely missed it (sports game is about it, and that is what friends/bars are for!). And I recently signed up for Hulu Plus to catch up with a ton of current television programs (which I am not too crazy about anyways, Jimmy Fallon rules).

So yeah, I understand the disgust, but I could care less.

I would be fine with this IF the Netflix instant que had anything recent to offer. I certinly enjoy going back and watching stuff that came out a decade ago, but, it is not like the are updating the instant que with anyting that is coming out now. With all of the money they are making off of their 23 mil customers, you’d think they would pump some of that into making the straming part a but more up to date…esp if it only costs them 2 or 3 cents.

There are a ton of great independents, current movies like Star Trek and the Iron Mans, amazing foreign ones like the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy AND Let the Right One In AND the American remake Let Me In (watch all of these!!!), and a whole bunch of movies.

And personally, the documentary section is my favorite, and they have a TON. If I could only watch one genre of movie, it would be a doc.

So yeah, there are some great movies on there, they just don’t have Harry Potter or Aunt Madea in the title.

edit- oh, and I forgot to mention, complete television series! I’m going through the original Star Trek for the first time, which is more enjoyable than I would have imagined, and sitcoms like Scrubs and Cheers.

(I can’t wait for season 3 of Sons of Anarchy to appear)

Exit Through the Gift Shop
The Parking Lot Movie
Mesrine: Killer Instinct
Mesrine: Public Enemy Number One

The Machinist

180 Degrees South
Survivorman
The WIld Parrots of Telegraph Hill

Shutter Island

and yes, the price increase is lame.

I wanted to kill the hipsters in Parking Lot Movie.

Kill them now.

I am just learning of the price increase. I hate to give up the DVD option, but I really never use it. I keep the DVDs forever and never watch them, instead looking for good instants. I was told awhile back that they were eventually moving toward stream only. If that is true, they need to get to adding more instants. There are a great deal of winners, but plenty of good/new ones that haven’t made it on yet.

Some more great overreactions to Netflix!

This World scares me.

No way you could watch all of this in one sitting.

9+ hours of Randy Savage, but more importantly… Miss Elizabeth.

^Ha, I watched the Parking Lot Movie too.

I wish I made better choices on Netflix. I’d say I’ve only watched 4 or 5 good movies off Netflix not counting documentaries and the ones I had previously watched. Living without cable for so many years, my knowledge of movies is very limited because I never watch previews. It’s definitely a handicap when trying to sift through for something to watch.

Definitely watched alot of the documentaries and liked almost all of them.

I watched every episode of Dexter available which was only the first 2 seasons, unfortunately. I watched the shit out of “My So-Called Life” as well. Still good.

I agree they need to add more recent movies, but I wouldn’t know the difference.

We stream Netflix from our Wii with a “borrowed” wireless signal. Sometimes it works for hours no problem, sometimes it won’t connect at all, and sometimes it goes in and out . Like tonight, I had some alone and wanted to finish, “When You’re Strange” (a decent Doors documentary done entirely with actual footage of the band from the late 60’s/early 70’s and narrated by Johnny Depp), but it kept “retrieving” for a good 5-10 minutes after playing only 40 seconds of the movie. Serves me right, I suppose.

I think I have “Stones in Exile”, a 2-episode Bob Dylan doc, and a revolutionary war doc/series in my que right now. Definitely open to suggestions!

Documentaries are the way to go.

Watch Capturing the Friedmans. Fuckin’ scary.

You want a documentary that will screw you up for days?

Cropsey :open_mouth:

And another doc. that is touching, sad, and makes you so angry that you want to strangle someone?

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father

I think the first doc I ever watched, and still one of the best, is Brother’s Keeper
http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Brother_s_Keeper_10th_Anniversary_Edition/60029558?trkid=2361637.

It was filmed in a town called Munnsville, not far from here. My friends and I became so enamored with these guys, we went and found them and they really were portrayed accurately in the film. Don’t think I like it just because it’s local. It is a great watch.

Cropsey is at the top of my queue, I keep looking at it and passing by. And yes, Dear Zachary is one of the most messed up things I have ever seen.

Lastnight I watched “Conean O’Brien Can’t Stop” and quite frankly, it kinda changed the way I see him. The documentary follows him around for the inception and duration of the comedy tour he did before getting on TBS. It’s funny, he actually says to someone on the phone, “I’m not going on TBS” when they mentioned some options to him, lol. He seems like a pretty unhappy person to me. Yeah when his fans are around he’s Conan the Monkey Boy who dances when you throw peanuts at him, but the minute they’re out of view/earshot, he’s cursing them and bitching at some guy named Jeff for making him talk to them. He was none too happy about having to announce the acts at Bonnaroo, but that may have been because it was a surprise to him until he got there.

I guess I always thought his on-air persona was reflective of his actual personality: just a funny guy who likes to make fun of people and act silly. Yeah, he’s funny without the writers at times (like when he makes his assistant talk into a banana during a meeting or after Bonnaroo when he keeps telling everybody on the plane including the flight attendant and fake people on the phone that he introduced Damian Marley and Nas), but it seems the overwhelming majority of the time he’s whining about shit or pissed off because nobody gave him enough validation for a good idea or the success of the night’s gig. Kinda disappointing to me.

Netflix Kills Quickster Brand

After receiving yet another round of complaints from customers, Netflix this week announced that it will no longer use the Quickster brand for the DVD portion of its business. Instead, it will continue to offer both DVD- and streaming-based movie services through the central Netflix site and brand.

Netflix announced its original plan to use Quickster for DVD rentals and Netflix for streaming video just last month. But the announcement, which was accompanied by an apology for a previous price hike, was met with derision by customers and others.

So Netflix finds itself apologizing yet again.

“We underestimated the appeal of the single web site and a single service,” a Netflix spokesperson said. “We greatly underestimated it.”

Netflix is one of the largest entertainment services in the world with over 25 million subscribers. But the company is attempting to transition from its original business as a DVD rental mailer to its future as a video streaming service, the latter of which has less overhead and expense. A single DVD mailing costs Netflix $1, the company says, largely obviating most subscriber fees.

When Netflix announced that it would be splitting off its streaming service from the DVD service, it also attached a healthy price increase to each. Subscribers were not amused, and an estimated 1 million customers abandoned Netflix; the company should report an updated subscriber figure later this month.

But fear not, Netflix fans: You may have yet another bone-headed move to complain about. The company said it wasn’t sure if it would use the Qwickster brand for a coming video game rental service, instead of simply using the tried and true Netflix brand. “That is to be determined,” the company said.

Cross your fingers.

Really was such a stupid idea.

so freaking awesome.

I finished Mad Men and needed something new to waste my time so I decided to watch the Wonder Years. When Nickolas was little we watched the whole series with him on Nick at Night and he loved it, like laughed through every episode loved it. So I put it on and the theme song starts playing and he runs out of his room, looks at me and says “you’re watching this without me?” Keep in mind that this kid doesn’t come out of him room for anything even when you yell for him for dinner so I was very surprised. He still laughs through every episode  .

I’ve already watched 15 episodes of Wonder Years ! My 10 year old LOVES it. She wants to watch it all the time. It’s funny because I’ve watched alot of 80’s tv shows with her and she told me yesterday that she wished she was alive “back then” ha. She loved My So Called Life and has almost made it through every episode of MacGyver. When I saw Wonder Years, I knew it would be a hit with her.

Such a great show. I found a channel a few months ago that plays some old sitcoms, this being one, and I was so happy to watch them. Like being nostalgic of nostalgia.
