Bonnaroo Memories

well…what a weekend it was…it was hot but damn i saw some great music and had a great time…missed some shows that i wish i would have seen but the heat played a large factor in making us lazy and making sure we would be able to survive into the night…i never did meet with the other oh kee pa’ers as my phone pretty much died out on friday but i hope you guys met and had a great time and some other day i shall meet some of you…as for the music…

FRIDAY: started out our fest by catching pretty much the entire gordon and ramble dove set. nice chill way to start the fest and the band sounded great…and who wouldn’t want a chance to see gordo really close
…then of to oysterhead…we walked up the right side of the stage and then cut in towars the middel and had some great seats…different and awesome show and they were all really into it…and to my surprise stewart copeland was the craziest of the bunch…it was awesome
…then back to the camp to chill for a while and get some grub before we would head back in to petty…walked in about half way through the show and i have seen petty before so it was a greatest hits show but still had an awesome time…
…left a bit early to go get seats for the umphreys/bisco set and got really close up there…wow…i am not a huge umphreys fan but that set was off the hook…the set just flowed so well that i was so impressed and i cannot wait to get that show…then disco, another solid set although we were really beat and left a little early but it was still some extremely solid stuff…we did leave so i am not sure if they played together in the end but i could imagine if they did, i am sure it was awesome
…wrapping up friday, saw some great shows and everyshow that we caught we also had some awesome views so it was a great opening fest day

SATURDAY: sat around camp for a while chillin and do this and that and headed in for rusted root at about 3:30…i definitely like the root and it was a fun set to watch
…from there we walked over to damien marley…this show was one of my surprise favorites…he did quite a bit of bob tunes and the reggaewas just flowing through me…great time and fun show
…after that we were off to catch half of the beck show…i am not a huge beck fan by any means but he has some good beats and the songs were pretty chill…good set to sit in the back and relax a bit and i am glad i checked it out
…left early to go check out a little blues traveler…they were definitely rocking and were having a great time…checked it our for about a half hour and it was a solid half hour indeed to check out
…now to check out the last little bit of cypress hill…another show we just sat in the back and chilled…solid though and a little hip hop always sounds good to me although i can not listen to it all the time…i mean, we had to go smoke a couple j’s at cypress so another fun show…
…went back to camp then to chill for a bit before we went in for radiohead…went in for more than half and it was a pretty good show…i have never really heard radiohead material a lot but it was pretty solid…not my favorite type of music and i did not get into this as much as other stuff, but it was radiohead and i figures we should check out one of the best touring bands in the country according to some so i indeed checked em out
…so by this time, everyone is buzzing about trey and mike being there and then on jam on, stef scamardsa or whatever said big time rumor for tonight is phuo at the superjam…so we decided to leave radiohead early and we headed to tent…people were there early anticipating what was about to go down, but there was still a lot going on so the tent was still pretty empty an hour before the show started…so we went and chilled for an hour and we got seats about 5 rows out left center and i was bouncing off the walls in anticipation for this one…so they bring out trey and mike’s guitars and start sound checking them and everyone knows it is about to blow up…then energy when they walked out was crazy and the show to follow was insanity too…obviously my favorite event of the weekend and i was blown away by the way they all played…definitely a statement festival for trey as he absolutley ripped it out the whole fest and our man is back on top again…was an amazing set and w could not believe we just saw the first phuo performance…checked out after that show as i was drained and wanted to be ready for one more day at the roo

SUNDAY: by this time, we were all pretty beat and tired and hot and it was kind of a chill day…definitely upset that we missed soulive but it was not working out at 1:45 in the afternoon…our walk was actually quite far and it made big decisions on when we would head into centeroo…so when we did head in…
…we chilled on the mainstage for the remainder of the fest…first was bela fleck…awesome show and they were tight and bringing it…definitely was moving my feet the whole time
…still chillin on the main stage, moe was next…never saw moe before and they kicked some ass…really enjoyed it and they are a band i will definitely go see again
…last show of the fest so we moved way up and got a pretty nice view of phil and phriends…great show and they were playing really well…scofield and campbell tore it up and it was a great show to end the fest…not crazy by any means but a nice way to just groove and finish up the fest on sunday evening

wrapping it up: what a great time at the roo…some really outstanding sets were played and i am so glad that i caught some of them…the first oysterhead in 5 years, the first phuo show, the first time i saw moe, first time for phil, first time for moe as well as many others…what a great time and a great lineup that was had and now i can look forward to vegoose…

hope everyone had a safe and as great of time as i did and i would love to hear some more reviews from the rest of the roo people…also i am sure i will be putting random experiences i had while i was there as i will start to remember the weekend throughout the day…so lets hear some more stories and such and damn, what an awesome weekend i had myself

cubbie! damien marley sounded good over the internet. I saw him at the house of blues. he puts on a great show. glad you saw him.

let me go ahead and break down all the performances i saw

THURSDAY NIGHT:
The Motet was awesome. really funky and groovy. the one gay who played sax was awesome, and the bongos player was really into it. i thoroughly enjoyed them. i checked out matt costa for a bit. he was alright. nothing special

FRIDAY:
First show was Seu Jorge from The Life Aquatic. he opened up with him playing Rebel Rebel on guitar. very awesome. then his band came out and they played some great tunes and grooves. i got a little bored, but i think i was just waiting for Mike.
I got on the rail for Ramble Dove and i was so happy to see them. they really fucking played well. maybe my favorite set that day. Weekly Time was jammed really well, and everyone else in Ramble Dove is amazing.
Oysterhead was interesting. it was really hot, and we were far away, so i sat and listened mostly. it was really good. nothing really stood out in my mind as far as jams went, but the coolest thing was when Les brought out his single string bass thingy (dunno what its called) and then Trey brought out this guitar with antlers on it. Fucking crazy! when trey smacked the antlers, it played! nuts. Then les brought out a banjo bass, which was really cool. all in all, i enjoyed oysterhead.

my gf and i were really tired, so during tom petty we went back to our tent and took a nap. we could still hear him, so i was able to hear some of the hits. we then went and checked out umphreys. they fucking rocked. the first song was prolly my highlight, cuz there was a glowstick war (my first) and the band was really into it. i left before bisco came on, so i missed the pink floyd craziness. then we walked around a bit. listened to my morning jacket, and they were really fucking awesome. that singers voice is so powerful. then we went to bed.

SATURDAY
got on the rail for grace potter and the nocturnals. absolutely amazing. she is so hot, and she can fucking play too. the guitarist is amazing as well. they fucking rocked hard. definatly a big highlight.
we went and checked out buddy guy, and that was cool. just some nice chill blues. we stayed for a bit, then saw rusted root. they were alright. nothing really blew me away, but i enjoyed them. blues traveler was fun. they played some great tunes, and jammed really well. then we saw les claypool for a little bit. nice as well. caught the end of becks set, and i heard he played amazing, as well as being really funny.
then RADIOHEAD. blew me the fuck away. during the set, the video screens stopped working, and they tried to fix it. they had screens in the back of the stage, which showed each guy playing, and they tried to patch that through. but then they turned it off. the during paranoid android, they turned the screens back on at the perfect time with the 4 of them playing, with these cool effects. it coulda been a disaster for the video screens, but they turned it into something amazing. basically, radiohead owned.

then GRAB. i was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
happy!!! i couldnt fucking believe it. i heard from someone that it was gonna be galactic, then right after radiohead some dude is like “yea its gonna be trey, mike and the duo” i nearly pissed myself. basically, they fucking tore my face off. they just fucking rocked.

SUNDAY
me and my gf went to the What Stage around noon and got on the rail, and we stayed there the whole day. First, the codetalkers. fucking funny, as well as amazing. they jammed really fucking well. they all wore suits, and the bassist was fucking nuts. then bela. i really enjoyed them. really groovy, and i loved them. i felt kinda sick in the middle of it, but at the end i felt better, and they were awesome.
then MOE! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! amazing! my favorite set of the whole weekend. they were soooo good. played a buncha songs i wanted to hear, and jammed incredibly tight. then closed the set with rebubula. i went fucking nuts. ahhhh so amazing.

then Phil. i was overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of their jamming. scarlet>fire was incredible. the song that me and my gf most wanted to hear was shakedown, and when they opened the second set with it, we were so fucking happy. basically, phil owned.

one of the best experiences of my life.

no doubt about it! i saw her briefly at WAKA and it was pretty cool.

That pic. of Grace is smokin!

hey, jaw, it was great meeting you man! i wish i coulda stayed and chatted with you more but i was exhausted.

I wish I could have met you guys. It just wasn’t working out for me to be there at midnight. Oh well, there’s next year. I have posted a couple of times about Roo, but i want to do a brief summary of the music I saw.

Toubab Krewe- Very good set. Check these guys out!

Umphrey’s on the little stage- I was at this one last year and there were 20 people there maybe. This year it was PACKED! It was a cool set.

Ramble Dove- Not what I expected. I’m NOT a fan of country, and this shit was very good. Even if it wasn’t Mike, I would still like Ramble Dove.

Oysterhead- Totally what I wanted to see. Blew me away. Real crazy shit. Especially the whamola/antler guitar/banjo bass. Trey wailed. Les wailed. Stu wailed.

Umphrey’s late night- FUCK YEAH! They went crazy with it. Very nice glowstick war. They played the 2 songs I have never heard and have always wanted to hear. I saw up until the time Bisco came. I was just too tired from dancing my ass off all day.

Buddy Guy- The sound was bad, which usually seems to be the case at the Which Stage, but Buddy played his heart out. It was really good. It was hella hot, though. I’m glad I made it to that one.

Medeski, Martin, and Wood- I wish I would have stayed a little longer. It was hoppin’ but I wanted to catch some of Les’s set too.

Les Claypool- Complete blur. I don’t know why. I think I was wasted. I kind of regret not remembering much of this set. I do remember it being funky as hell.

GRAB at the Superjam- Need I say more? Best set of any Bonnaroo, ever. I like the Trey songs they did too. Completly unexpected. I had already put the idea of Trey at the Superjam away a long time ago, because he had a date in St. Louis that night with Petty.

Dr. John/Rebirth/Dumpstaphunk- I was still in a funk from the gel I ate and the music I had just heard. I needed to get myself together. This was a great way to do that. They wore it out. Thank You Falletin’ Me Be Mice Elf put a huge smile on my face.

Flecktones- Boy howdy. I love their new shit. They played a great set. It was too short though. Those guys deserve more time on the stage.

Matisyahu- I love this guy. I didn’t stay long, though.

Phil and Friends- YEAH!! Great setlist. Great sound. The downpour couldn’t have been at a better time. It seemed that as the rain got more intense the music got way intense. I absolutly loved this set.

I also saw a few bands on Shakedown. I don’t remember their names, though.

Regrets (missed)- The Motet, The Codetalkers, The Mitch Rutman Group, Tom Petty (was 10 minutes late), Ricky Skaggs, Bisco, The Neville Bros, Gomez, moe., Damien Marley, Refugee Allstars.

^^yeah, its all good.

so i got some pictures up here. i’m not gonna post all of them, but i’m gonna post a lot. We’ll call it, the best of my collection that’s relative to the OhKeePa.

sorry some of them are so huge

Nice pics Jawbone, and great reviews everyone!

Also, thanks to you Jawbone, it took me forever to read them becuase I had to keep scrolling back and forth about a million times. And everytime I would scroll back to start another line I would get lost and couldn’t figure out what line came next…

It was fun though…

Grace Potter is one sexy mama

^Yes she is!!

We should have a thread devoted to Grace Potter pics…hmmm…

Great pics by the way!

VEY HOT, ANd the devoted thread bit… YEAH!@!!!

It was so weird… during Bela Fleck’s set, I had this overwhelming urge to just lie on my back and look up at the sky, which I did. It seemed like all their music was coming from the sky. I noticed there was a large cloud mass moving in all throughout the set… and then, just as they were winding up, it rained a few very gentle drops of rain-- and then the clouds moved on. The weather didn’t do this for any other band over the weekend. Later I had a discussion with someone about this-- she noticed it too. In my opinion, the Flecktones had the most “innocent” sound of any band, and so somehow brought the rain. This might sound like hippie blather, but I swear it’s true.

so did momamamma and her husband brian ever make it down there?

Fantastic! What a legend.
