Brooklyn

i finally bought this on cd the other day and i am thourougly impressed!

i remember watching bits of the DVD and thinking they looked and sounded so tired and uninthused, but the cd’s don’t convey that. the moma>free is mindblowing, the birds is one of the best i’ve heard, the weekapaug is the sickness and that’s just skimming the surface. great, great ph show.

'tis all, good day.

^really? wow i never thought about that. i just thought it was cool music.

ya I have to agree with Smuggy-McSmuggington…Brooklyn is pretty damn sloppy and flat, except for the jam between Moma Dance and Free.

I listened to that 6.17 second set once, and I don’t think I ever will again.

Listen to any of the other June '04 shows, CharlieJack…the Brooklyn shows are easily the worst.

yeah i don’t have a whole lot of ph to compare it to. but i always did like the ragged and raw feel of their sound during that time, even if not all the jams were super interesting. but i could always find something to like. hell, i loved Coventry. sure, trey’s playing was awful a lot of the time but the music and the whole thing was viceral and real, just like it had always been, just in a very different way.

so i’m sure there’s better stuff out there than brooklyn, and maybe it’s just one for me to listen to a couple times. i liked it though. i will have to seek out more june shows. what’s yer suggestions?

Its funny because I think of Trey’s playing for all of '04 being quite shoddy, with a bad tone and many “false notes” and flubs, yet the last six shows of June '04 all have something good in them.

I attribute this to Mike and Fish, I guess.

6.25.04 is a show where Trey’s flubs really stand out at points, but its still a show I’d listen to again. Check out the Bag and especiallly the Wolfman’s from set 1 on that night too. Great stuff. And the Mike’s Song rips.

6.19 and 6.24 are also solid.

I had the DC '04 “Gin” come on while I was running this morning and while I’ve previously thought it to be meandering and plodding, I truly listened to it (headphones helped, as opposed to regular speakers like before) and thought it wasn’t half bad.

I don’t think 6/17 is that bad of a show. The first set I think is great (for PH), with The Curtain (With) and the Moma Dance>Free being the obvious highlights. The second set, while not nearly as good as the first, starts out strong, IMO, with 46 Days>Possum, but then the show fizzles out. I rarely listen past Possum.

I loathe that “Suzy.”

yeah i skip that song. but then again, i always have. it sounds like a spin doctors song or something to me.

Try the 8.11.04 Suzy. Even if you have to skip the choruses, the jams between are extra crunchy thick musack.

I must say that 6-25 set 2 is amazing…but the again I love 7 below, mikes groove, 2001, and YEM. But that is just me.

long story short brooklyn could be the worst live phish release ever…

Yes, there are many '04 shows that would have been better choices for release, but Brooklyn does have its highlights, so I don’t think its the worst release. That would be 6/14/00, which does absolutely nothing for me.

^^the segue into 2001 is forced and kills any chance of a good YEM jam. Furthermore, the 2001 is as standard as can be, and did nothing for me.

^sadly, there really aren’t any '04 shows that would have been worthy of release, but if one had to choose, SPAC would be the choice, or maybe Great Woods. The presence of the pro video crew at only Brooklyn decided which show would be released beforehand, though.

The latter half of the second set is better on paper than it is in practice, but don’t get me wrong it is still good though.
But if you like 7 below as much as I do this one will blow you away it completely and utterly destroyed the one from the previous year

The joke being that the seven below from the year before was actually shorter than the album version.

I can see how someone would think the Brooklyn '04 show is the “worst” live Phish release ever…but 6/14/00?

6/14/00 is probably in the bottom-5 (not mine), but at the very bottom?

I’ve given 6/14/00 a number of chances, but I’ve never gotten into it. No other official release bores me the way it does. So yes, I’d say its at the very bottom.

So so so so so so so so true.

They are the bottom rung. Both of those shows together (maybe) make a single rung.

I think I’m going to dig for that thread you started about worst/questionable LP releases.

I liked that thread.

Let’s get some heated debates going…some cuss words…someone leaves the board.

You know, the usual.
