Camden 99 Chalkdust question

This is a question and not a discussion on the jam, so I didn’t know for sure where this should be posted. Anyway, I was just reading the 6th volume of the Pharmer’s Almanac, and one of the reviewers of this show said that later in the jam there is a full band jam on Joe Satriani’s Summer Song. Does anyone know if that is true? I haven’t heard this in a while, and I need to get the show again cause I don’t have it anymore. I’m a pretty big Satch fan, I’d be interested in hearing if they did actually go into Summer Song. Thanks!

I love this jam out of “Chalkdust,” but am not familiar with “Summer Song.” Sowwy.

Actually, I had not heard that there was another jam inside of the “Chalkdust” jam until today. Interesting…

This is the greatest Chalkdust ever. I don’t really know how Summer Song goes so I couldn’t tell you if they tease it or not. I listened to it yesterday though, and it definitely goes through several different jams and themes, so I wouldn’t be surprised if said song was in there somewhere.

I can’t say I necessarily hear it. Maybe a “tease” or the Chalkdust jam “contained elements of ‘summer song’” but I don’t really hear a full-on jam. Satriani can shred, though.

I’m not sure about the tease…but lets broaden this out a little more.

I’m fascinated about how different people’s perceptions of this show are. I’ve heard a lot of negative reviews…someone even said it was the lowest point of Phish’s career. Some people really like it, and it was a livephish release. I also haven’t listened to it in a while, but I remember the first set being pretty nice, especially the Bathtub Gin.

How can a show with a chalkdust UB40 thinks is the greatest ever be considered such a horrible show by some? Also, the next two nights at Great Woods are classic shows loved by almost everyone, so how could they go from the lowest point ever to 7.13.99’s first set in three days?

The second set has a 20 minute Tweezer, a stretched out Birds, and a Fluffhead closer. I’ll have to listen to it again, but was the playing really THAT bad?

Oh, and I REALLY don’t like Phish’s versions of While My Guitar Weeps.

listening to it now - will report back in 15 minutes.

It’s most likely a coincidence…or a little tease.

7-10-99 was my stock answer for when people asked what the worst show i saw was.
that was until 12-5-99 came along.
now, i say its an even tie for WORST SHOW I SAW.
however, this chalkdust is my all-time favorite version.
i cannot deny that.

verdict:

I see no connection. nice try.

Alright, I thought it was interesting that the guy in P’S Almanac said that. It would have been intersting. I’d still like to hear that Chalkdust again sometime. I’ll have to track down that LP release.

here is the AUD for ya.

I was not at this show but I’ve listened to the LP release… ummm I don’t get it. Worst show? I mean there are some nice jams, decent song selection, no terrible flubs… was the energy just crap while there? Did Trey flip you the bird during chicken shack? Also the show contains an all-time fav but ranks as the worst show? I’m just confused?!?

Thanks Augustus, listening now…

Ya, I didn’t hear Summer Song anywhere, but that was an incredible jam! Wow, I love the part that start around 9:10 with Trey doing the whammy pedal stuff. Thanks again ausutus.

Actually, after listening to Summer Song, I can kind of see where the reviewer thought there was a jam. The part I mentioned, starting at 9:10 has the jam bass and drum feel as Summer Song, but that’s gotta be a total coincidence. If the reviewr would have never mentioned Summer Song I would’ve have enver in my life thought it sounded like that, so I would say it’s definately coincidence.

I can see how some might say it’s the worst show they ever SAW. Maybe the energy was just non-existent. It’s certainly not the worst show I’ve ever HEARD. In fact, I enjoy most of it quite a bit. And yes, when I think of “Chalkdust,” this version is the first one that comes to mind. The jam is mind-blowingly amazing. I don’t agree with people when they rag on this show, but if they were there I believe them if they say it was a poor show. This definitely is one of the most maligned shows in Phishtory.

WORST SHOW I SAW, is what i said.
Amsterdam '96 was worse than this.
so were a ton of PH shows i didnt see.

no terrible flubs?!
thats how you like your fluffhead’s?
WMGGW?

also, Back at the Chicken Shack is my LEAST favorite song that they cover.
HANDS DOWN!
my hate toward it is indescribable.

its a shame that my favorite version of Chalkdust was part of the worst show that i SAW.

yeah, WMGGW is HORRIBLY flubbed. Especially the beginning.

And I agree with phg, I hate their cover of it.

The flub is WMGGW is minimal, come on people. They aren’t machines.

I like this show. I don’t hear the satriani though.

Back at the Chicken Shack is one of the coolest songs ever. Jimmy Smith is amazing.
