Cicadas

“There is really no reason to panic. They are not poisonous, they do not bite or sting. There is really no danger to humans at all.”

So these bugs come out of the ground around here once every 17 years. They are absolutely everywhere for two months, and then that’s it for another 17 years. In 1990 I was in 7th grade. I remember trees and bushes around my school being filled with cicadas.

is the 17 year thing indigenous to the Wisconsin area, or are they like that everywhere cause I think Ive seen them every year here in NJ

“Crickets and Cicadas sing a rare and different tune”

From what I remember there are two types of cicadas… the 17 year one and another one that has a shorter cycle (13 years?). I think one has green eyes and the other red eyes.

Then again I learned this in college and I can’t trust anything I learned in college… too drunk and high.

I could swear that there are cicadas every year in my area, though. We even have this insanely evil looking wasp/hornet species that are called ‘cicada killers.’

there are cicadas every year, but the big rush of em comes out every 17. Next year will be a big year with some stragglers, as well.

I think there are cycles other than 17 years. 13 is one of them, I think. At least in Indiana that might be the case.

it’s funny. i’m so goddamn scared of wasps and hornets, and i saw one of those things once and screamed just like a lady. turns out they are very docile and don’t pose any danger to people. they sure do look nasty though.

Are you kidding?? I’m pretty sure that they can/will sting you, just like wasps and hornets.

There you have it, wikipedia cannot lie.

LOL.

oh no, they can, they just aren’t inclined to. they are a docile species of wasp. they use their sting primarially to stun cicadas and drag them back to their nest to feed their young.

i promise this is true, for i am a bug nerd.

Does anyone just stay at home during Cicada party season?

last time i was in Florida, one of those bastards flew right into the side of my head at full speed and then just plopped to the ground. it hurt! i’d never seen one up close so i picked it up and was checking it out. suddenly it emmitted this crazy, super high-pitched scream/call/whistle sound and i was startled and sort of flicked it out of my hand. it flew away from me, did a loop and proceeded to fly head on into the brick wall right next to me at full speed, knocking itself back out and plopping to the ground. i don’t think they’re too bright, actually.

oh yea those things get everywhere.

and yes they have gone kamakaze on my and flew into my head/body/limbs before… and they just fall

my wiemeraner used to eat the carcases… nasty

fuckin bugs

bump since one flew head on into the car i was in yesterday and made a huge green mess on the windshield

fuckin gross

This is a big deal from what I hear. It was supposed to hit us at Summer Camp festival last week. NEver happened though. Bummer.

I haven’t seen one yet!

sometimes i gotta look around on rocks and trees and what not and ill see one, but yea they may not be common where you are
