Classic Dead Shows

Hey all,

I hear that I need to post or I’ll lose my account, and that would be a bummer.

I actually have a non-Phish question… and it’s fairly naive… and big

For someone just getting into the Dead, what live shows (or era) would you recommend? I just started listening to American Beauty and totally heart it. I’ve found a huge list of Dead concerts at the Internet Archive, and would like to grab them, but there are so many, I don’t know which to get.

Also… if there’s a list already online somewhere that you’d endorse, that would be sweet too.

peace

i think we have a thread on this somewhere…let me poke around…

eDit…i couldnt find it…and i know nothing about the grateful dead. sorry

I love early dead. But thats me. A lot of people like the 80s or late 70s. But for me 65-73 takes the cake. I bought the fillmore west limited edition box set from 69, but you can’t get that any longer. Go for some 69, try and find some filmore, avalon, or carousel ballroom shows. I personally love 67. That was a great year.

You’ll find it, just look from 65-73 or so.

Album wise.

American Beauty was my first. Great Album. Got me hooked. Also you might want to check out workingmans if you like american beauty. After that when you get really into check out anthem of the sun and the self titled album. Thats some heavy stuff.

have fun. The dead are amazing.

long live jer.

5-8-77

i’ve been listenin to mostly 80’s shows lately…brent added such an awesome touch. i just listened to 9-11-83…thas a great show.

and 5-5-77, 5-7-77 and 5-9-77.

i like early 70’s Workingman’s Dead era, Pigpen style!

but i am starting to like the vibe of some early 80’s Dead. I only have a handful of CD’s/records, so if anyone wants to hook me up that would rule.

As a long time Dead fan I can second that as my favorite show ever.

i like to listen to era’s. late sixties, '73, '77, '89, and '90. many very good shows in each year.

There’s nothing to lose by d/ling an etree show but as for a purchase I wholeheartedly recomend the GD movie soundtrack box set from Rhino. 5 CDs and pretty affordable (20 english pounds over here - I don’t know how much over there). It’s got some awesome performances (The 30 minute playing in the band is incredible and perhaps teh sweetest Scarlet ever (though no fire)) but most of all the sound quality is sublime. Some of the other recordings are a bit muddy but this is crystal clear; all the instruments are easily heard and fit together perfectly like a really nice jigsaw.

I’ve gotta say my favorite shows have also come from the 70’s, specifically 73 and 77. Anything before that is great too, and I’ve only recently started getting into the 80’s stuff.

I recently listened to a show from Cameron Indoor Stadium (;)) from 73 that sounds terrific! The TLEO from that show is total bliss. But you can’t go wrong with 73.

Europe 72.

Thats where I began.

1969-1973 are golden.

Lately I have been listening to some late 80s/1990 stuff, because I do love Brent. Drums>Space sucks to listen to, EXCEPT for 3/29/90 with Branford Marsailis. Everyone who enjoys the Dead should have that one. SICK!

here is an excellent Europe offering (MP3 but oh well)

I prefer the 70’s stuff but they can bring some heat in the 80’s as well. I recommend the 3 day Alpine 89’ run. 80’s Dead at their best!

Wow, you all are awsome. Thanks for the advice, and for responding so quickly!

Also, Jawbone, if you have a high speed Internet connection, you may want to check out the Dead shows on the Internet Archive, http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Grateful%20Dead and do a search on b.t.etree, http://bt.etree.org/index.php?search=Grateful+Dead&cat&sort=seeders

^yeah, that works sometimes, but other times it gets tricky.

i don’t know anything about all this downloading stuff and even with everyone’s help here i still have never seemed to figure it out. I guess i’m just not etree savvy at all.

nice name by the way and welcome to the board.

i don’t like their albums much, but i couldn’t tell you about any “classic” shows.
just download away, you probably won’t find a show you hate!

Ok, since we got some good Dead shows in here, anyone know of any good solo acoustic Garcia shows? I just downloaded 4-10-82 (early and late shows) from the Capitol Theater, NJ and I absolutely LOVE IT. Just wondering if there were any others out there…

never really got the dead until i heard 5-15-70. GREAT SHOW!! the archive has it i know b/c i got it off there. acoutic sets. new riders of the purple sage sets. eletric sets. i like early did because that was when the were the most bluesy b/c of pigpen. late 70s is alright but i just think it tends to get semi-boring after 73. but i love the allman brothers. which is why i love early grateful dead.

5/8/77 CORNELL. Availiable on NUGS.net.
And the 1970 Harpur College show, a Dick’s picks release.
Also Europe '72 is a great pick.
