Cliff Jumping

Anyone ever been cliff jumping? (Into water…of course.) I first did it about 10 years ago at the Racine Quarry in Racine, Wisconsin. I’d guess it was 20 feet. I had to get yelled at by the lifeguards afterwards. About six years ago I went with some friends at the MacKenzie Reservoir near Tulia, Texas. Cliff jumping was not permitted, but it was an hour or so before the park ranger guy showed up. He didn’t actually catch us. I went back a month later to jump again and measure the height. One jump was 40 feet and the other was 50 feet. Holy shit…now that’s a rush. It took a lot of time to work up the nerve to actually jump. 50 feet was mindblowing, and it’s nothing compared to other jumps that people make. Check out www.airabovewater.com

yea i did a few 40 footers once, i actually got quite a headrush. I heard on the news the other day that people have been getting injured and its been cause of concern for officials

I’ve done it a few times. It is a RUSH!

Senior year of high school a bunch of us went down to Mexico (Puerto Vallarta) for a week, and it was a BLAST! We ended up cliff diving off a cliff about 40 feet in the air, what a rush!

Also a few years ago when my buddy first started working up at Put In Bay, we would go up and visit him, and the owner of the bar my friend worked at would let his employees go behind his house and swim in the lake. Well… After many drinks after waking up, we decided it would be a good idea to walk down the side about 100 feet, to this cliff maybe 20-30 feet in the air. We all jumped in without thinking, and without realizing the water is only about 4 feet where we landed. Well… a few scratches and bloody feet later, we decided it would be better to hold out rafts to land on, and it worked just fine! The best was when my one friend jumped onto the raft, and she went right through the middle, popped up with the biggest look of surprise on her face, it was hilarious!

On a somewhat related note, anyone been to Jamaica? Walking up Dunn’s Rivers Falls is quite the experience! Instead up jumping off a cliff, you are walking UP a waterfall. I have some pictures of this somewhere… But I would have to find/scan them… Too much work

I went bridge jumping in South Carolina with my cousin about 6 years ago. We estimated it to be 50+ feet. It was CRAZY! I had to have my cousing push me off the first time and then it was ON! They stopped letting people jump about 2 years ago because some kid fell on a metal pole that was underwater and got pretty hurt. Nonetheless, it was pretty f-ing cool

I had an “encourager” one summer, a friend of mine who was way more into jumping off of things than I was, but whom I would go with to his various spots. I jumped off a 40 footer into lake Champlain, and another about 30 ft into a pool surrounded by rocks. I almost fell off this one once and that was the end of jumping career thus far. Overall I’d say I did 30-40 jumps, they were definitely fun and invigorating, but I had had enough. My friend went onto to things like an 80 ft bridge, which he did a few times, but eventually landed wrong and messed up his leg, though this didn’t keep him off the smaller stuff, crazy bastard.

^ Lizard. I went cliff jumping near Burlington once with some friends some years back at this river gorge. Quite possibly the scariest experience since they had a plaque up with all the names of people who died cliff jumping there. You had to aim yourself into the part of the river that was the darkest blue, and clear an outcropping of rocks. If you didn’t I guess you would wind up on the plaque. I think the jump was about 40 ft. Have you been there?

Yup, been there. My “30 ft” jump is actually a little ways down the road, a much safer place to jump (relatively), there isn’t an undercurrent to drag you under the rocks and bash your head. This area is referred to as “The Gorge” or “Huntington Gorge”. The sign is a little intimidating, with like 40 names over the last 60 years of people who have died at that spot. I prefer the lower area overall, it’s got more room (read: isn’t as crowded) and you can go up the stream to a nice little waterfall with caves underneath it to sit in, quite beautiful.

It makes me smile that there are some other crazies here on the Oh Kee Pa who are willing to throw themselves off a cliff. The feeling of jumping forward and your back foot leaving the surface is absolutely insane. The sound of the air rushing by your body is unexplainable. My palms are getting sweaty just thinking about it.

There is a swimming hole about 20 minutes away from the Gorge. There are some cool cliffs to jump off of there. We went in 97 and 98. Not sure how tall they are but it was fun and scary. Anyone ever been there?

^The same Gorge mentioned above? If so you are probably talking about Bolton Falls or Triple Buckets, depending who you ask. There’s a nice waterfall, and a pretty good pool for jumping into. This place gets VERY crowded in the summer as it is not very hidden and off a main road (about as main as you get up here).

I once did a 30-35 footer in Maine. It hurt…a lot.

^^i think bigb is talking about the music venue the gorge in washington…right bigb?

and ive done a few jumps before…in mexico…they ranged from 20 to prolly close to forty feet…never measured em…so maybe my eyes made em seem bigger…still quite the rush though.

It always looks higher from the top of the rock!!

ain’t that the truth

neck is right. i’m talking about the Gorge in Washinton where Phish played in 97-99 and 03!

Phish jumped off a cliff in the gorge in mexico that looke tall from the top??

weird

i did some cliff diving in the catskills, probably about the same as all of u, about 30 feet. Had to jump pretty far out to be sure you didn’t hit the rocks, that was the scariest part for me. It wasn’t the height as much as you had to be sure to propel yourself forward like 8 feet or so to not hit rock at the bottom. I did it twice then decided not to press my luck.

The thing I almost killed myself doing was jumping from a trampoline into a pool, i just missed my head on the concrete edge of the pool by about 2 centimeters. I had slipped on the trampoline from everybody’s wet feet and went totally sideways in the air. i will never try that one again. I have a friend who dove into a pool and broke his neck, he can walk but has to use the sticks, and has some muscle distrophy problems. Becareful doing these kinds of activities, seriously.

a kid i know jumped off like a 150 foot bridge into a river

^Thats like… from outer space maaaaan…

I used to do jumps all ranging from 30-40ft… one of the last times I was superdooperblazed and went a flying off this cliff into a quarry… with my glasses on… doh!

How correct are the height measurements?
Regardless,
