Ditched the TV!

I decided to ditch my TV and my DirecTV service! I’m going to use my iMac as the TV and the internet for all my content.

Anyone else just use the internet for TV? I know I have to wait a day to watch most shows, but I usually do that now with DVR. Any tips? Sites besides Hulu and the actual network sites? I am kind of giddy thinking of how much money I’m about to save…

I haven’t had cable for a while now, NetFlix Instant Queue is about all the TV I need.

And I just hooked up Windows Media with my XBox… haven’t quite played around with that enough, but I believe I saw a feature for Live TV :wtf:

That would be cool. My kid has an xbox at my parent’s house… but I don’t think I can hook it up to my iMac.

Netflix instant queue is a great one though!

ICC would be proud. Just finished watching episode 11 from season 1 of the X-Files on my Netflix instant Queue. We watch an episode a night over dinner. It’s great

I didn’t have cable for the last 3 years, but I got it just for the final season of LOST. Now that it’s over the cable box is going back tomorrow and we’re going back to downloading everything via Bittorrent. I just downloaded some Dr. Who Season 1 (2005) and a couple of Pixar movies…oh and I’m keeping up on Hells Kitchen Season 6 (Ben all the way bitches!) and Penn and Teller: BS. I don’t even think I get Bullshit on cable.

If you’re gonna use bittorrent for dl’ing, as I’d recommend, I’d also say use btjunkie.org. It has most everything I’m looking for, but if anyone has any other tracker recommendations, please let me know.

This list is pretty old, but there are probably some handy links on there.

There are also fancast and yidio in the realm of hulu. There are tons out there, you just have to weed through the bad ones. As you find good ones, keep us posted in this thread.

I just finished getting the movie from the mail, and am a couple episodes into season six.

I was actually contemplating getting the show through the mail… but decided against it… and a week or so later it pops up on instant queue. Perfect. :ugeek:

Thanks for all the info everyone! This is exciting…

I got rid of cable a long time ago, but I replaced it with family time, cooking, and playing guitar

^the best idea yet.

No T.V. and beer make Homer go crazy

And surfin’ the Pa!

I actually thought you stopped watching tv… so like the title should read “switched the tv”. “!”

anyway I like the internet for my pornographic viewing or er… phonographic listening… no umm doing audio/visual… stuff.

And returning to FaceBook!

Touche’. FB is out again, though. I had a brief relapse after posting house pics but I’m over it

I haven’t been watching much TV myself lately. Maybe once or twice a week I’ll sit down and watch an Anthony Bourdain or something, but for the most part, there isn’t much on that appeals to me. I can’t get rid of the TV package though, because then how would I watch football in the fall? That’s one of my favorite things about fall time, watching football on Saturday afternoons after doing some yard work.

This is very true about the commercials. Another thing is you’ll be watching a show at normal volume, and then all of a sudden, the commercials come on and they’re so fucking loud you think you’re going to go deaf. It’s very obnoxious.

I don’t watch television; I just really got to the point where I couldn’t tolerate being beaten about the brain with nonstop propaganda. The commercial factor is so over the top too, it’s like the entire country’s favorite entertainment medium has sold out, 100%. I can’t stand to witness the decline of my own culture in full color hi res like that.

^ Actually commercials used to be way worse than they are now. If you watch old shows like the Honeymooners or whatever you’ll notice that commercials aren’t just these little breaks in a show, the entire show is usually one big commercial. At least product placement and blatant sponsorships that the actors have to make mention of 10 times per episode don’t really occur as much as they used to. Plus with DVR/PVR/Tivo or what have you there is never really any reason to have to watch a commercial when you are watching TV. Having said that, with less advertising now than there used to be, due to the economy/TIVO/pirating/too many channels for TV commercials to effectively work, cable is more expensive than ever and that’s why I’m getting rid of mine as of today.

I just bought a brand new giant TV and…oh

wait…

wrong thread.

Yeah I never watch actual TV, 95% is garbage and the commercials are irritating. I do still keep up on a few shows when I have time, so I have a few good websites I go to. These websites have great image quality and even stream in HD for some shows/movies. For me, that is key as I can’t stand to watch a show in low quality when I am plugging my computer into a 46 inch HDTV. On both the sites I use they are in divx high quality/HD and they are the best I have found in my nearly 2 YR experiment of not having cable.

www.ninjavideo.net This one is good as it lists TV in realtime so whatever shows are on TV that night will be on ninjavideo a couple hours later.

However I mainly use ipb.quicksilverscreen.com/index.php?showforum=49 It isn’t organized as well as ninjavideo but it is much easier to use with less hassle. Usually I look at ninjavideo to see what shows are on and then watch them on this site. Also, its movie section blows ninjavideo out of the water. IT has just about any movie you could want to watch.

Cheers
