I will admit, in the grand scheme of things, I am a phish newbie. However, upon my descent into the deepest realms of phish-dom, I engaged myself in everything I could POSSIBLY, to really understand, the band, the members, and the community at large. I respected the boundaries of my knowledge, and did not speak “out of my ass”. After countless hours spent in phishtory, I finally could consider myself, a phan.

Fast forward to present day, and I am frankly, getting sick of a lot of “new” fans, who aren’t fans at all. They are noobs. I am 22, and a lot of “heads” i come across in this general age bracket, listen to emo, and hordes of other crap. In the rare instance, that a fellow head, listens to phish, it is a false appreciation of them. One kid last night told me that they will have a stop this summer in VT, because that is where Trey is from.

Now, for all I know some of these phish fans, could really be into the music. I would guess not. When i was first introduced to phish, I was also introduced to their community of phollowers, who are so deeply involved in the band, and their music, they go beyond phan-hood. This is what i aspired to do, when I first got involved with them. I wanted to know and love the band just as the 40 year olds do, that grew with the band from its humble beginnings.

Well, this is becoming quite the rant now, and I hope you can understand what I am trying to get it. I am sick of these nouive riche fans, acting like they have been with phish since '92. It is unfortunate, but there will be a lot of noobs out this summer, trying to catch the scene at a phish show, just once.

I never got the whole “scene” surrounding phish when I started listening to them. All I heard was the music. Now, due to the internet and various festivals, I have an IDEA of what that scene is all about, but really I don’t care. I just love the music. And if never seeing Phish makes me a noob, then I guess I’m a noob, but that doesn’t mean that I have any less of an appreciation for the music than someone who has seen them 100 times.

I don’t see how a person listening to emo and Phish or metal and phish or techno and Phish or whatever else they listen to effects their ability to appreciate Phish any more or less than anyone else.

I don’t know what I’m trying to say. Don’t judge lest ye be judged…that whole thing, you know?

I have a real problem with noobs. Mostly because I am pretty much the realest motherfucker on the planet. I look around at all these fake motherfuckers and I’m like, “This is bullshit”.

You are lucky enough to at least have some people who are cooler than you to look up to and put you in your place. I, on the other hand, have never met anyone as hardcore as me, so my ego is so huge that I spend all my time thinking about how annoying everyone but me is.

Because of my giant ego and dedication to my identity as the realest motherfucker in the world, I now freak out every time I take LSD.

I also can’t get laid for some reason.

I just know I love these message boards for this exact reason. It seems like it’s hard to find someone to geek out with who’s also on your level about a band. But then, these band message boards is where you find 'em. Welcome to the OKP man.

you are all missing the point.

you are on THE phish message board, reading, learning, and discussing the best band in the world. So you haven’t been to a show? Many phans haven’t had the opportunity. You all have countless live recordings on your computer, and you probably listen to them religiously.

Now, there are people out there, who act like they are into phish, but in reality, they couldn’t tell you the difference between YEM and a phish-made cover.

The point I was trying to make, was that, with the counterculture nature of the band’s following, many people today associate with phish, based on the cultural aspect of the band, not the music. You all listen to phish for the music, that makes you all phans. And to further that, I was also trying to say that, this summer, will have a lot of these noob fans, in it for the scene, not the music.

When I first saw Phish, the scene was based around the music, and I doubt the Phish scene, in and of itself, circa early '91 actually attracted anyone at all. Fast forward to 2004 and there’s tens of thousands of fans at every show, most of whom have limited interest in Phish musically.

Annoying indeed.

But what can be done?
