by and large, i think the whole “n00bs” thing is mostly just a concept kept alive and bitched about on PT. they have this one kid on there terrified to go to his first show because he’s technically a n00b. they keep telling him to be careful of getting “dose-raped” on the lot, and that when the vets recognize him as the n00b he is, they will run up to him and “punch him in the heart”. it’s actually pretty funny. even more so because this kid believes them.
I guess I am a N00b.
Although I never take my body further than its limits.
I’m 21 as well and never did get to see Phish. Saw the dead in 04’ at Deer Creek, and i totally n00bed it up w/ some fungi, first time as well. But its one of my great experiences in life…But i totally wasnt expecting what happened.
I tried to hit up Phish in 03’ but momma said I was too young. (she obviously knew the deal).
Since then I have been to numerous festivals and shows. (None that were phish, of course : )
But I think I will be just fine among the ones that have been seeing Phish since 1990. My cousins were all really into phish and i was exposed at a young age. I can tell the difference between a true phish song and a cover. I purchased every DVD possible and live album/album.
I cant wait to be hazed. Half of the fun at a show is cutting it up with the old schoolers and hearing their stories and how i’m n00b. Its the closest I will ever come to a 97’ tour or 00.
I think instead of ripping on newbs all the time…tell them about your experiences and how phish truly has impacted your life.
Most of us know not to force our way to the front, or yell and scream during Amazing Grace.
I get cold chills and almost brought to tears at times watching Bittersweet motel and It.

I think the beauty of phish phans is that they are fans by discovery. Let’s face it, Phish is not a radio heavy band(unless you have ever heard of Endless Boundary), so most people discover them through either a friend or stumbling upon them while listening to something else. My first song was Antelope, and while there are still going to be those people who are there for Farmhouse and Bouncing, most noobs still went through the same discovery as people who started with Junta.
Quick story also. I’ve been noticing among different people across the board have mixed feelings about Dave Matthews, and I want to put an outsiders perspective on it. I was a Dave fan long before I knew about Phish, and while yes they are much radio friendly, they did introduce me to the Jam scene, and they have some sweet live material(I love watching people going expecting Ants Marching and Stay and being angry that every song is 20+ min, it’s the same with every band I guess, and I bet I will experience it at Great Woods). When I went to a show with my cousin, he told me I should check out Phish as well, and well, here I am three years later. So while I know there are always going to be people who don’t like what Dave is doing, but they are a great stepping stone for people to look into Phish, the Dead, etc.

So easo, your right, people are turned onto Phish when they least expect it. I got numerous bootlegs from cousins and one of my mom’s friends when I was approaching the ripe age of 16. But I didnt really get the music yet. I was still in my “Metallica, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and any rock played on the radio stage”
But as I got older, I became bored with the same songs and the same drunk assholes at shows.
Thus I found Phish and the dead. And now i’m here waiting to find out if I scored any Noblesville tickets.
My first Phish album was A Picture of Nectar, which is also my favorite album.
this is a good point, and partly explain the “noob” phenomenon in the Phish fan world.
haha…seriously the vast majority of people at a phish show, newcomer or old vet, are there to see phish and have fun; not to worry about who’s been around the block the most times. i seriously don’t think most people are worried about noobs because that’s just dumb. and to anyone who is, maybe they have forgotten the point altogether. the rules of phish are three:

Noobs don’t bother me, but cheeseballs do (we were all noobs at one time). I’m there to enjoy MYSELF and don’t really care about the crowd!!! The only thing that sucks is that it is alot harder to get front row now (and tickets for that matter).My first show was HORDE I in 92 at Jones Beach (Phish’s first headline of the tour). I was sixteen and had already seen the Dead a bunch of times. It’s the young cats who talk shit and don’t know shit that bother me. BTW, I also was at the Greatwoods Gamehenge in 94 (my first full summer tour). 17 years later after first seeing them and they still get me excited. Can’t wait for my 33rd B-day March 6th in Hampton (who’s got that extra?). I have tickets for Sat. and have a house with space to stay at 3 miles away from the show!! Anybody need a place to crash for the weekend for tix?
Me too Space. Check out the Tweezer at Big Birch July 94. GREAT second set. I was front row with my face melting (wink, wink)!!! The Dead was playing less then two hours away so all the cheeseballs were there. Phish played under a fucking wedding tent that night and we threw all of the fold up seats outside the tent by the end of the first set!!! CRAZY!!!
