For those of you who don’t like the album downloadin’ thing, sorry… but here’s Ys, via regnyouth, on rapidshare.
A friend at work gave me Joanna’s first cd a few years back and told me to give it a chance. I instantly loved it. My wife and I caught her a Bonnaroo a couple of years ago too. 6/10/05 in the other tent. If you get a chance to see her close up, watch her fingers at the end of the show, sometimes they’ll be bleeding… which is awesome.
for some reason I’ve been apprehensive about buying her second album. I’ll be sure to change that after this thread.

Okay. I downloaded. I listened. I was impressed. But not enamoured.
But I persevered. to my mind, all the greatest music needs a bit of effort on the listener. And slowly, those winding melodies attached themselves to my brain. I just bought YS because the downloads aren’t good enough.
I am slowly unravelling this fantastic album and enjoying it more with every listen.
Greg - this is down to you. Thank you. This album would not be in my life had it not been for this recommendation.

I hear the live arrangement is spectacular. From what I understand, it’s all re-arranged for various acoustic instruments… like Banjos and middle eastern stuff like Ouds and shit.
See, I was first on the scene with Joanna Newsom, and same with Explosions in the Sky. You guys oughta listen to me more often.

No offense, but just a set of lyrics will NEVER be “fucking epic.” Lyrics don’t mean anything if the music isn’t any good. Although, I assume the song is good too ;D
Either way, I’m already busy stealing her albums off of a torrent I found. I’ll be sure to check them out and give my opinion later. (Don’t worry…if I like them, I’ll buy the real thing…I always prefer to have the original CD anyway).
And I like how she has the “Ys Street Band.” Clever, Clever, that girl.

Yeah, I tried. I didn’t expect a guitar solo or anything, but maybe she could show off with that harp of hers…that would have been nice.
And I know the lyrics are quite nice but the music didn’t seem to fit with them. Like I said…it’s likely just me. I’m a bit snobbish with my music.
