This one could get ugly
Piper is one of my favorite post-Rift Phish tunes.
Not to totally categorize their songs that way or anything.
They kind of did it themselves though, didn’t they?
Songs like “Piper” were a rare occurance in the post-record contract era … such an unusual song, really a pretty progressive piece of work.
In some of my favorite shows ever the Piper is what makes the show. SPAC '04, that piper makes the tour in fact. I agree that Ghost is always great and Piper can be hit or miss, but when Piper hit’s it hit’s way harder than Ghost. I just think about the Island Tour, even though that is a really good Ghost with lot’s of high’s, it is so overshadowed by the Piper from the night before that I barely even remember it exists.
Garsh…had to ponder the yonder on this one. My gut said Piper, but then the brain intervened and said, “Remember those Ghosts that you’ve been listening to lately? remember how much you head bobbed to them? Well go with it then dummy!” This coule be a toss up everytime for me though.

No question as far as I’, concerned. Piper’s a unique song, but Ghost jams are unbelievable at times.

Piper.
Not that I don’t love a good Ghost, but to me the only reason for a live Ghost is the jam that comes out of it. The lyrical section is always really dirge-like and they usually fuck up the entrance after the eight bar ambient space. The jam often ceases to resemble Ghost at all after a couple of minutes and could really be a one chord jam after any song.
Piper, on the other hand, soars. I especially love the earlier versions with the mellow waltz ending.
You sent me this version in a trade, and, sadly, I’ve only listened to it twice since I got it - the last time being about 6 months ago.
I remember it distinctly…it gets REAL heavy, ambient, and spacey. Trippy stuff indeed.
I really like that version, but I prefer my "Ghost"s to be of the rocking variety. Like DC and Phoenix '98.
piper is a great song, but come on ghost rolls big baby. listening to the IT ghost right now.

I sometimes think that Piper just ends up going into a jumbled mess. Playing it too fast and it becomes jumbled noise to me.
… and what do you have against jumbled noise??
I have never once been excited or disappointed to hear Piper. I would just hear it, and realie it was Piper and sya " Ok, cool…" but no big reaction. Kinda very apathetic to it.
Now Ghost, however, would illicit some high fives and quite a few times of " I think I can hold off on the bathroom break now until they play something lame like Bouncin"
that, and dancing… lots and lots of dancing.
the chord changes in piper are too close to weekapaug for me not to think of that song every time they played it. the '97 slowed down ghosts are the shit.
Piper got screwed.
Ghost should win, but this is more like a 3 seed vs. 6 seed matchup.
