I think great openers are the rockers like Chalkdust, Llama and The Sloth was a sick opener for New Years Eve 95.

It also kicked off 08/09/98 VA Beach, one of the premier shows of that year, and was promptly followed by a very juicy Bathtub Gin. This was an incredible start to an equally incredible show. But don’t take my word for it…

It was a dark, cold, rainy drive into work this morning, made super-glum by end of the holiday time-off. But the 08/09/98 show practically jumped into my hands this morning when I was picking the music for the commute. These two songs just put me in the right head by the time I was halfway here.
PYITE with the right attitude, can’t be beat as a rousing show opener…or workweek opener.
PYITE is in a lot of first set. 10/31/98, 2nd behind axilla. 7/8/00, first. It just gets the crowd going. and you can’t jump straight into a jamming machine.

- PYITE (12/03/97)
Absolutely. PYITE is a very Phish opener I think, unique, spacy, funky, with lots of Phases, but with high energy points. Love the '97-'98 versions where they opened with it.
