favorite dead tunes

i’ve been on a major dead kick lately. what are some of your favorites? i don’t think standing on the moon gets enough due credit.

Standing on the Moon bores the hell outta me.

The songs I get excited to hear lately…(besides the obvious ones…St. Stephen, Scarlet->Fire, Shakedown, etc.)

Hell in a Bucket
Cassidy
Deal
Loose Lucy
Unbroken Chain
Big River
Jack Straw
Loser
West LA Fadeaway
Feel Like a Stranger
The Wheel
THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED!

Eyes of the World. I love this song because there’s just something about that odd, shuffling riff that Jerry plays at the beginning of the song that I can’t get enough of.

The Eleven. The epitome of headiness. They tore the shit out of this song everytime, and the segue from St. Stephen into this song is what the good things in life are all about.

Playing In The Band. Is there a greater moment in Dead-dom than when they are SOOO far out in a jam and then miraculously bring it back to the chorus again?? It truly feels like a musical journey.

The Other One. Whatever the full “true” title of this song may be, it is a fuckton of fun.

He’s Gone. Probably my current favorite Dead ballad.

Tennessee Jed. I don’t really buy into the whole mythologizing of the South as somewhere inherently better and more laid back than the rest of the country, but I do love this tune. It’s so hard not to sing along with…

^interesting, both Playin’ and especially Tennessee Jed drive me crazy. You’re right, Playin’ jams can be pretty damn awesome, but the song doesn’t do it for me.

Dancin’ in the Streets and One More Saturday Night are two others I just thought of.

I’ve got Iko kickin right now and I must say it can make you dance

My Brother Esau always gets me off (musically)

Big Railroad Blues

BIODTL

GDTRFB

el paso
mexicali blues
black peter
i need a miracle
don’t ease me in
TERRAPIN STATION!

standing on the moon bores you? not me. i love those lyrics, and when bruce hornsby plays it…forget about it.

I like “The Wheel” and “Sugaree” quite a bit.

Also, I can’t believe no one has mentioned “Franklin’s Tower.”

I really like “Peggy-O” as well. Jerry’s playing on that tune is great.

weather report suite is my fav weir song. they have a bonus track on one of their album boxed sets which includes an acoustic demo track of weir performing this song solo acoustic…follow all that? anyways, its really good and gives you a perspective of the song in its earlier stages. he is only really missing some lyrics in the beginning and i think he omitted a section before its final release. seek this one out.

i also am a big fan of
viola lee blues
mr charlie
new speedway boogie
good morning little school girl
the music never stopped

There it is.

one not mentioned… Birdsong

ahhhhhhhh

what’s that song on Mars Hotel that’s like “She wants money” high voice “What she wwaaaaanttts”

I love that tune, but don’t have the track listing for that album.

Out of my 17 Dead shows I never got a Birdsong or an eyes…

As for a Bobby Tune: Lazy Lightning/Supplication; Lost Sailor/St. of Circustance

They change often…but, I think my all time favorite is China Cat > I Know You Rider…

Then (again, this is always changing) Eyes of the World, Sugaree, Deal, Playin’ in the Band, GDTRFB and a good Jack Straw.

Wharf Rat

That part in Rider where Jerry goes “I wish I was a headlight, on a northbound TRAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN”
That gives me goosebumps typing it.

Any Lovelight, Good Lovin’, School Girl… Well, anything with Pig Pen singing.

Dark Star from 1969.

The “Formerly The Warlocks” Hampton '89 run. All of it. Chills when they bust out Dark Star and Attics of My Life.

Ramble On Rose

and…

Dear Mr Fantasy > Hey Jude Finale. Any of them. But especially Hampton’89.

Dark Star Dark Star Dark Star

I love every Dead song that Jerry/Bobby/Phil/Pig sang, but Dark Star is my favorite song by any band ever.

Scarlet
China Cat Sunflower
Playing In The Band
Eyes of The World
are all great but nobody’s mentioned three of my faves.
