Favorite Hampton Comes Alive Disc

Mine for the longest time was Disc Three, except for Gettin Jiggy With It (although I am not a huge fan of the “Fish songs”).

However, lately my favorite has been one I am sure many people may disagree with me about, Disc Two. I love the way the disc flows, starting off with Mike, than raging with Possum, slowing down with Roggae and Driver (which is climbing my ladder of favorite lyrical Phish songs), and ending with a ripping Melt.

I think out of all the discs, this may be the best played all around, even though the song list may not jump out as amazing.

Disc 6!!!

Sabotage>Mike’s->Simple (gorgeous melodic jam)->The Wedge>Mango Song, Free->Ha ha ha->Free>Weekapaug
E: Tubthumping

I love this “Simple”…jam gets spacey late in the song and fades into “The Wedge”

Yup. Disc 6 all the way!

im gonna have to go with “HAMPTON IS WEAK!”

seriously…even “A LIVE ONE” beats the hell out of ‘comes alive’…

stash! a live one! so sick!!!

Yes, Hampton Comes Alive is average at best. Yes, the A Live One “Stash” is very exceptional. But HCA does have it’s moments, and I would take the Hampton “Gin” over the ALO “Stash” anyday.

HCA isn’t the best live release, but an average phish show is still an amazing show. i say disc 6.

Did Phish know it was going to be released going into it? For some reason, a voice in the back of my mind is telling me I remember hearing something where they knew it was going to be released.

Maybe, just maybe, it was the jitters that got the best of them, trying to make the “perfect” show. Sort of like New Years or Halloween… there is just so much hype, that no matter how Phish performs, it is not God-like.

^

Interesting question…not sure…

It does seem like they had a fun time at the show, so maybe b/c they knew there was an outside chance it’d be released they had fun and played what they wanted (which they do anyway I suppose)

All in all the Free Ha Ha Ha Free set, but lately the set with Cry Baby Cry has been in my player!

I like the Nellie Cane Foam…Tasty

The wedge from disc six is perfect. I love playing just this song when I only have time for one song.

Id have to say disc 3 is my favorite. I always like hearing “roses are free” even though its a standard version but what makes this disc my favorite is the Harry Hood, Character Zero, and Cavern with the GCH to end the set.

^
the “Gin” from that disc is underrated IMO

  1. 6
  2. 3
  3. 1
  4. 2
  5. 5
  6. 4

Oh its a damn good Gin, i really like page’s intro on this one.

^Ya in that Gyn I always felt Page was teasing George Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue - you know like the United Airlines commercial theme - I have heard it in more Gyns but this version is the most pronounced by far. Does anyone else hear this?

^ I’ve definitely noticed that in Gin before, good call.

I don’t remember this one specifically sounding like ‘Blue’ more than others, but I’ll give it another listen

Oh, I forgot to mention that the wilson from HCA is probably my favorite version ever! The wilson>bigblackfurrycreaturefrommars is insane!!

^Refined Taste^

Almost every Gin I’ve ever heard has Rhapsody in Blue teases…I can’t think of one offhand that doesn’t. That version obviously isn’t that pronounced if you have to ask if people hear it.

^teh ESW, the reason i ask, is bc it is rarely if ever (never seen it myself) listed as a tease on setlists at phishnet, so i wondered if anyone else had caught onto this but i guess it is old news and Phans are huge on Gershwin - my bad. In fact this version gets credited for Rock n Roll teases in the jam. But I also think Gins pre- Europe 97 are very different. The Amsterdam show sparked a new and great era for Gins - Would you agree with that ESW?
