Favorite Hampton Comes Alive Disc

^Ya in that Gyn I always felt Page was teasing George Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue - you know like the United Airlines commercial theme - I have heard it in more Gyns but this version is the most pronounced by far. Does anyone else hear this?

^ I’ve definitely noticed that in Gin before, good call.

I don’t remember this one specifically sounding like ‘Blue’ more than others, but I’ll give it another listen

Oh, I forgot to mention that the wilson from HCA is probably my favorite version ever! The wilson>bigblackfurrycreaturefrommars is insane!!

^Refined Taste^

Almost every Gin I’ve ever heard has Rhapsody in Blue teases…I can’t think of one offhand that doesn’t. That version obviously isn’t that pronounced if you have to ask if people hear it.

^teh ESW, the reason i ask, is bc it is rarely if ever (never seen it myself) listed as a tease on setlists at phishnet, so i wondered if anyone else had caught onto this but i guess it is old news and Phans are huge on Gershwin - my bad. In fact this version gets credited for Rock n Roll teases in the jam. But I also think Gins pre- Europe 97 are very different. The Amsterdam show sparked a new and great era for Gins - Would you agree with that ESW?

I don’t quite understand you

Complimenting someone who appreciates Gershwin props to you PH Guy

uh-fucking-greed. though i havent heard hampton. it costs to much damn money. except youcan get it for a decent price at dry goods.

You know what I found disappointing with Hampton? I thought the band was much too controlled. Almost all of the songs were solidly played, but with very little “spirit”, adventure, or daring. I believe they played conservatively because they knew they were recording for the release, and wanted no major screw ups.

I dislike as much Phish as I love mainly because of the chances they are willing to take with the music. Some of it misses in my mind, some of it’s OK, some of it’s great, but some of it is so freaking unique, that it touches nothing anyone else can do. It’s THAT music that makes me come back for more, and Hampton really didn’t have much of that.

This “Gin” from HCA is in my top-5 versions of all-time, believe it or not. They hit a peak somewhere between the 6:30 and 7:30 mark that I can’t say enough about. This version was the first live song that actually pulled me in roughly 6 years ago.

Anyway, where, exactly, is the “Rock and Roll” tease? I just don’t hear it anywhere.

I’m not in any sort of disagreement with you, I have never heard the Hampton '98 version, and was just pointing out that every Gin that I’ve heard has had Rhapsody in Blue teases…I actually really love Gershwin, as the first Orchestral concert I went to on my own (without my grandparents) was a performance of Rhapsody in Blue and An American In Paris (complete with the car horns), just as a side note.

I’m just wondering which Amsterdam shows you are talking about dbphan, the Winter shows or the Summer shows? I guess I could look it up, but I actuallythink the new era of Gin came with the 11/7/96 Gin. This is a jamming monster which gets overlooked all the time because it is a '96 Kentucky show. It’s over 20 minutes and is more heavily groove oriented than any Gin before it, but it is also pure hose. I guess their whole style of jamming changed with the Europe '97 shows for every song they played, but I think it is mostly due to the new Modulus and the smaller venues which allowed the band to groove with the crowd a bit more…this is a much larger issue than can be tackled here, but '97 did definately usher in teh Phunk, if that’s what you are talking about.

I’d have to go with Disc 3, that was some of the first Phish I ever heard and it has changed me ever since! I love the Harry Hood and Gin, basically I love the whole disc!

You nailed it Golden although i haven’t heard that Kentucky show i am trying to find it now. Ya th Phunk that came from Europe was sick in fact I think this is the same tour but that YEm with Bella is probably one of the last YEM that is really worth talking about although Deer Crrek that Summer was hot too. Anyways Europe 97 has many Phunky highlights. But we both agree that Gershwin is Gereat and apparently Page does too. But you know what I mean about it never gets listed as a tease?

GHOST420 in response to your post which is in the same vein here. Ya I don’t quite get the Rock n Roll tease either but phishnet puts it as such and i think they are referring to the very moment you noted in the jam. And I agree completely about what that jam is and meant. it’s my favorite to practice to.

I have been to all the Hampton Shows… since 1995… they could have picked 1997 much better year for a live disc… BUT since we are talking about this set… Disc 1 and disc 6 THEY ARE PATER

It is still disc 6, although disc 3 is a close second.

Disc 3. That Gin and the NYE '95 Reba are what got me hooked on Phish.

^
That “Gin” isn’t the best ever, or even the best from 1998, or even the best from fall '98, but it’s still one of my favorites. They really kick it up a notch in the jam and it hits a great peak near the end.

7 months, 2 weeks and 3 days later and disc 6 is still my favorite.

And FWIW, I got a chance to listen to the HCA “Hood” while running yesterday evening and clearly remembered why it was a top-10 version for me. So tight with a great ending! That and the “Gin,” sadly, are still not quite enough to overtake disc 6.

I probably haven’t listened to this since I started the thread.

Booyah!
