I like the entire production of “Piper”. It just evolves out of nothing, has a very short and simple vocal section, and then just jams. Isn’t that what we all want?
Sleep without a doubt.
Have to second the ‘Piper.’ There is something so simple and yet powerful about this song. ‘Pebbles and Marbles’ is reminiscent of the way it just slowly builds up from absolute quiet. “She started a blaze from one tiny spark” and “Passing through the corridor…” are easily the two best ‘catching your attention’ Trey lyrics in the Phish canon, IMHO.
Bug, it was Farmhouse for the longest time but I resently heard a fantasic Bug and I changed my vote on the spot.
gotta jibboo and you keep on drinkin toooooooooooooooo!
Gotta say Bug if only cause the version from Big Cypress is probably the best moment of that whole experience.
Toss up between Sand and Gotta Jibboo.
- Gotta Jibboo
- Farmhouse
- Dirt
- Piper
- First Tube
Really I am going to have to go the opposite direction and say i love a live gotta Jibbo. I like how it’s just a fun song. but were are all entitled to our opinions. but i do agree that it fits very nicely on the album.
As much as I hate to disagree with fellow fans, I agree that live versions of Gotta Jibboo are quite strong. The song lends itself to some strong jamming territories.
But alas, I also agree with whoever said their favorite song on the album was Gotta Jibboo. It’s my favorite song on the album AND it is fantasic live.
Mike seems especially pronounced as soon as the jam section starts, and trey usually steps in with the delay loop shortly after (or before). That kind of “spacey rock” is music to my ears. ;D
Piper. Sleep. First Tube. gosh, that’s tough.
I guess I’ll go with Piper.
First Tube for sure. But I also like Sand and Piper a lot.
First Tube probably cause I got to see it live a few times and peaked once during the opening guitar licks (it sent me into an awesome psychedelic trance, man I wish I was there right now, I’m smlin thinkin about it). Sand and Bug tie for second, both have great lyrics, especially Sand IMO. I also love Piper though, it has grown on me the most of all of the songs on that album
Gotta Jibboo and Farmhouse because of the solo.
Tough call for me b/w Farmhouse and Dirt.
I’d go with Dirt, though, because whenever I venture to play the studio version, it makes my spine tingle
It really is beautiful and kinda spooky at the same time
Tie between Bug and Piper
I can’t choose between farmhouse and dirt two of my top phish songs
it wouldn’t twist around that way…
Inlaw!
As I sat in my dorm room at Manchester College and downloaded away late at night on good old napster, my brother was online giving me input on what phish songs to download, sort of easing me into phish music. The songs on this album were the first phish tunes i listened to and grew on me so well. If i had to pick a favorite song, id say farmhouse or gotta jibbo, but heavy things has more meaning to me. Now that i think back on how i started listening to phish and the first few songs i heard, im glad i heard them! 6 years later, i still pull out my farmhouse cd and blare it as im driving to school, none the less to student teach! Although, those days are over, as of tomorrow, i’ll be a college graduate, and soon to be elementary teacher!!
