Favorite War Movie?

Hey Bill, I need your help remembering a movie…

It was a 70s/80s movie about WWII. It involved a carrier in the pacific that entered some sort of time warp and found itself at Pearl Harbor in '41.

I can’t, for the life of me, remember it. My dad had it on tape and I used to love watching it.

Dr Strangelove is kind of a Cold War movie, so that could be included in my favorites as well.

  1. Full Metal Jacket
  2. Apocolypse Now
  3. Paths of Glory

This was a toughy. All three of these are incredible. Kubrick gets extra points for having 2/3 of my list. Apocolypse Now is pretty fuckin incredible though…

The Thin Red Line comes to mind.

There was another movie kind of similar called the Philadelphia Experiment, I believe, where a battlship disappears in time.

Yeah that was it:

both strange flicks

The Final Countdown!

That’s it! Thanks Bill.

Martin Sheen and Kirk Douglas…I knew someone famous was in it. For some reason I thought it was Brian Dennehy. It was actually Charles Durning.

Shaving Ryans Privates!!

Hamburger Hill

When Trumpets Fade (HBO)

Tora! Tora! Tora!

A Bridge Too Far (one of my Dad’s favorites)

Does Red Dawn count as a war movie? That’s a classic 80’s movie. I just Deer Hunter here today from Netflix.

I think Ian wins this one.

Platoon
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket
Hamburger Hill

and HBO’s Band of Brothers is just amazing.

I would put Platoon first. I’ve loved that movie for a long time. I’d have to say Full Metal Jacket is a better movie, but Platoon is my personal favorite.

never so few

Good ol’ Steve McQueen.

The Towering Inferno rules your face!

Yeah, I’m surprised noone has mentioned Glory yet. Also another classic war picture, with Ferris Broderick not Broadway Broderick.
