Quite a few choices. But really, who’s counting?

Hoist, fall 1999. A Live One was purchased at the same time but I thought I would start with a studio album.
I think that Farmhouse hooked a generation of fans just like Junta and A Picture of Nectar did.
Julius -> Down with Disease got me hook, line, and sinker.
i heard billy breathes driving with my aunt thru the mountains of north carolina…i still remember just seeing the album cover and wanting to listen to it just because of that…i can still hear prince caspian flowing thru the car and out the windows.
what a memory…good thread
PON, Christmas 2002
junta…i was just a wee lad when i bought the cassette. Man I loved that Pollock album art…
dinner and a movie and bowie were my first two favorites.
same here man.
a live one did it for me
JUNTA…when it was still pretty new. I remember thinking, “THERE GUYS SOUND LIKE ZAPPA AND THE DEAD AS ONE BAND!”. “I need to see them!”. I didnt see them until 3 years later.
Oddly enough, Undermind was my first record. A lot of people I knew had been talking about Phish, and I had always heard of them, and wanted to see what they were like. So I went to my local wal-mart and saw what kind of selection they had. All that was available was Undermind and Round Room. I remember reading a bad review of Round Room in Rolling Stone and Undermind getting a beeter one, so I went with undermind (Rolling Stone seems like a bad thing to base a decision on, but they weren’t hardcore phan reviews, and I wasn’t a hardcore phan… yet). So, I went home and popped Undermind. The whole CD had me wanting more after a week. In fact, The songs on undermind are still on the top of my Most Played list on iTunes because i listened to the album 30 times (seriously, 30) in one week.
I played in a crappy garage band in high school and one of the bands we used to play with always played Farmhouse as their closer. I didn’t even know who Phish was until about the fifth time I heard the song and asked the singer who the original artist was. He just handed me the CD and said enjoy.
And oh did I.
put another vote in for ALO
Junta was my introduction to the band. In 1991 I was at summer camp in Maine. One of my buddies had a copy. It took me a LONG time to get into it. YEARS. In fact I didn’t start really listening on my own until 1994. Junta def. was my first experience with the band, and the first album I bought.
Story was my first and will be my favorite forever i love evrey song on that album
PON was mine in '93 and I bought it knowing that Phish was coming to my town in a few weeks. I found it at a mall record store in the “sale” rack, meaning that they wanted to clear their inventory and Phish wasn’t moving CD’s. I think I paid $4.99 for it. Anyway, after listening to it, I remember thinking, do I even want to go to this concert? I was 14.
But, I went to the show and loved it, realizing without being told by someone, they’re a live band, not a studio band. So I’d have to say that seeing Phish got me hooked, not listening to a studio album.
my brother gave me hoist for my birthday when i was in 6th grade. i only liked a few songs on it, especially sample and julius. my appreciation for phish has continued to get deeper and deeper ever since.
That was it for me to, weird.
Billy Breathes.
Live Phish 14 was my first and still my favorite official Phish release.
