mine was rift back in 96. still my fav album to this day.
Farmhouse was my 1st… but I haven’t bought any other studio albums since.
I think that mine was hoist. It might have been junta. But i was really into phish before i even ever got a studio album.
Harpuas correction - Live Phish Volume 7. The divided sky, mound, and Horse>SITM were what got me.
I wonder who the brave soul will be that selects the Siket Disc as their first.
I LOVE that album… But if anyone found that first, I bet it is a great story!
junta was my first full album, although I heard the song farmhouse first.
I was given a copy of the original Junta tape (white cover with a pinkish picture of fishmans face screaming) still had it until I moved a few years back. Saw one just went on Ebay for like 500$ or something stupid like that.
Junta, It was a gift I still have the original given to me, What A great GIFT…
I miss em’…
A Live One.
driving around delivering pizzas circa summer 1996, when over the FM airwaves: “the woman was a dream I had, though rather hard to keep…”
the rest is life-changing history.
^lol I love your presence on the boards lately Garlie
The first Phish that really caught me was the Wilson"–>"Tweezer from A Live One, but I think I might’ve heard Character Zero or the Farmhouse album first.
Another vote for A Live One
it’s good to be here. i’ve been sick as a dog this past week, unable to leave the house or do much else. the good old OKP has been great cabin-fever therapy!
Rift. After a good review in the dutch press. Can you believe it? Obviously A Live One finally did it for me. I never looked back.
Farmhouse was my first full album – got it from a friend of mine. Then A Live One. YEM made me a believer.
Lawn Boy was my first. And he was good!
In the beginning, I heard Hoist, but the first album I bought was A Live One. On cassette(s).
Then, my following purchases, if I recall correctly, were:
- Billy Breathes (didn’t like it, gave it away)
- Farmhouse
- Hampton Comes Alive
Since I was still a n00b when I bought BB, I didn’t get it or enjoy it that much. Clearly that was towelerrific of me.
Okay, my first Phish experience was A Live One. However, I think it was LP11 that hooked me. I’d also like to tell the story of the most perfect way to listen to A Live One for the first time:
I had just rented out A Live One and LP11 from the library. The next morning I was leaving for my first high school band trip. Anyway, I put ALO on my iPod, planning to listen to it on the bus ride. The next morning, the bus left at around 5 AM. Now… just imagine listening to that Bouncing-Stash-Gumbo for the first time, staring out of the window of a bus with the sun having yet to rise. Might not sound as cool as it was, but it was pretty farking cool. Then I got home and listened to LP11 and that just showed me the true badassness of this band.
I bought A Live One when it came out, purely out of curiosity. I didn’t even know anything about Phish at the time and I was 15/16 years old. I was hooked from then on. We used to blaze bowls all night long and listen to ALO - good memories. I picked up Lawn Boy and Hoist shortly thereafter, but didn’t buy any more studio albums until a CD buying binge recently.
I picked up every one of their studio albums off of Amazon recently, some for as little as .88 cents. How crazy is that? I knew all these songs as their live versions and had never heard the studio releases.
Hoist was autoshipped to my bestfriend from BMG when we were in 7th grade. She didn’t like it and gave it to me, but the first album I actually bought was billy breathes
First album I bought was LP 18 ('94), but a funny thing happened and I got disc 3 of LP 17 (which, in my opinion, is definitive 98 funk) instead of disc 1. So in my first Phish (and live phish) purchase was of my two favorite eras… immediate introduction!
I think the first song i heard was Farmhouse (i know).
And I think I bought LP 18 in 2003 and then didn’t see the boys until Bonnaroo this past summer (FML).
