Fixing external hard drives...

my external broke

all might be lost for a good portion of my music collection and its gonna be a hassle to go through all my “non-digitized” archives to repair the rest.

the dick at Best Buy said it would cost $99 to retrieve the material but then i couldn’t fix the drive.

or i could send it to the company for warranty repair and they would fix the drive but all would be lost.

does anybody know a better way outta this one?

what exactly did they saw was the issue, or did they not even get into it like that?

What make and model of external drive is it and what’s actually going wrong? It might be possible to take it out of the casing, put it into your computer and drag some of the files off it onto your other hard drive or on to DVD etc. It depends how far gone it is.

it is a Western Digital 250GB. I got it in like January or something.

when i plug it in it just starts making these crazy clicking noises and none of the files are read.

sometimes it reads how much is on the drive and some of the main folders show up but when i try to open them the whole thing just freezes.

the Geek Squad guy didn’t look at it. I just told him that and he said, “Yeah, its either one of the other. $99” and i walked away.

Geek Squad are salesmen, not computer technicians. Find a real computer repair place and go there.

I have never done this… but have heard about it before.
