Hey guys…some of you are pros with this downloading-torrent crap. I finally got into a torrent and such and got this show but all the tracks are in “FLAC” format. From what i understand, this will play on Winamp but you can’t burn it to a CD (which is what I want). Is that part right? Also do I convert it to something first to burn it? I’ve heard to make a wav file but I’ve never used a wav file in my life…does it look like an mp3?..Can I put it on a CD using Nero like I would with an mp3?

Sorry…I’m retarded on this stuff…I still long for the easy days of cassette tapes.

Google “Flac Frontend”. Very simple program that will turn your flac to wav, which you can then burn to CD. I believe Nero should recognize it, they are similar to mp3, though not compressed (a good thing!). Just try to import them to Nero and see what happens.

Note that Flac Frontend lets you pick where to drop the wavs once converted. A good thing to do is either dump them in the same folder, or create a folder titled ‘wav’ (or whatever you want to distinguish from original flac files) and direct the program to dump the new files there.

Let me know if I’ve confused you further and I’ll try to explain better. It’s all pretty simple once you’ve done it a coupla times.

^get this thing, then you just pick a folder and it does the work and extracts the files, you get WAV’s from your FLAC’s, which are larger files, but sound much better in my opinion, they will take up more space but it’s worth it to me, and if you plan on burning CD’s you can always delete the files

Also now that I’m into this torrent thing finally I’m thinking of getting some of the Phish shows I have on Tape onto CD now. I checked out www.shnflac.net and bt.etree.org for some but there didn’t seem to be a lot of variety. Are those the best sites for that stuff?

No variety?!
Well…LL is doing all of '99, so there is that year for you.
There is currently all of the 80’s and '95 being seeded at etree amongst other randoms.
Tell you what…give me 3 shows you are ISO and I’ll seed them for you next week on etree.

Hmmm…I guess I figured that would be able to find complete tours and such but I suppose that’s asking too much…right now I’m just looking for shows that I’ve actually gone to…I have them all on cassette but not on CD. Also maybe I’m unsure how this thing works since I’m new to it. Are you the same Augustus that’s on etree? I found 11-11-98 being offered on there by yourself but once I clicked on it, it didn’t download with no d/l speed or anything.

Am I supposed to keep the BitTorrent program up forever and whenever you’re on, it’ll download? It’s just difficult since I’m doing this from work so it’s hard to keep my computer on that long. Can you close Bit Torrent and then open it again and resume the download later on? (Hmmm…actually right after I typed this, I checked and it started downloading but then it stopped again…I guess I DO have to wait??).

Of course, since you asked, three shows I’d like are 7/20/99, 7/23/99 and 12/2/99…of course you said this LL fellow was doing all those, yes? I’m also looking for 7/14/00, 7/15/00 and 9/18/00. There’s a few Trey ones I’d like too but I guess I’ll stick with that…

The bittorrent program needs to be running for the download to continue. You can close it, shut down the computer and pick up where you left off at another time though.

If you look on the right side of all the torrents, there are columns that say “peers” and “seeds”.
That 11-11-1998 show might be a little old, so there are only a few (or no seeds) left on it.
Ideally, you want a bunch of seeders on a torrent to help speed things up.

As for those '99 shows…

You can go to the 07-20 show and hit the “reseed” button.
THis sends out a PM to all the people that DL it.
Hopefully some peeps will help you out with a seed on that.

12-02-1999 should be seeded there shortly.

One more thing. I recently got a show on shn format. Can I burn that to CD or do I have to convert it to something? Is there an easy program to do that with?

Quick question about BitTorrent…

After the show downloads, it will remain on my list where it says that it is “seeding” for other people. However, I don’t want to leave it on the list. If I right-click and pick “remove” will people still be able to seed it? I don’t want to screw people over but then I don’t want those shows mixed in with my list of downloading shows if I don’t have to. Can people still seed them if they’re not actually showing up on that list? Also, if they need to be on that list, how do I put them back on there so people can seed them?

Others will still be seeding, but once you take it off your program you will not. I fyou remove a torrent, all you need to do to “get it back” (you never really lost it unless you deleted the files- you simply removed from torrent program) is click on the original torrent link and save it to the same file as previously. Your program should check the files for 100% completion and then start seeding again.

I think you may be confusing seeding and leeching, at least as I understand your above post.

Leeching = downloading
Seeding = uploading. Once you are finished downloading, you should automatically start seeding. However, you’ve probably been seeding (uploading) as you were downloading.

Commonly, it is appreciated that you seed as much as you leech, or maintain at least a 1:1 ratio. If you don’t feel like leaving your torrents open forever, at least seed them to 1.00 (ratio) before removing.

Yes, by your definition, I meant “seeding”…I’d already downloaded the files and I wanted to start sharing for others but I had hit remove from the list…I didn’t know if the program would still seed if I had hit remove on them and didn’t know how to put it back. Anyway, I found the links on bt for all the ones I removed except one of them so hopefully that will be good.

I don’t get the 1:1 thing. I see four numbers…like one file I finished downloading currently says Seeds: 0(1) Peers: 0(2). Not sure what that means and the BitTorrent Help menu doesn’t help. Ug.

The numbers outside of the parenthesis (sp?) is who you are connected to. When you are seeding, you will not connect to any Seeds, so that should be 0. However, to upload/seed you need to connect to someone in Peers section. It looks like you are not connected to anyone there either, but there is two people trying to connect to you. This is where forwarding your ports comes into play (www.portforward.com)

The 1:1 ratio is download:upload.

Obviously you can only download 1, but you can upload an infinite amount.

Probably when you just finished, your ratio was below 1:1, possibly a 0.35 or something. That means you shared back 35% of what you took. If you keep seeding, you will see that number go up. And eventually you will hit 1.000 That means you have shared 1:1.

After that, the ratio (assuming you keep the upload going) will reach numbers like 1.250, 1.500, 2.000, etc etc.

The 2.000 would be like a 1:2, or that you shared back twice what you took. Which is a good thing.

Those numbers are people connected. So, one person is uploading (only) and two are still downloading (also uploading, but do not have a complete file set yet).

I use Azureus, a different BT client, and it shows how big each torrent is, and also how much I have uploaded for each. Once the uploaded amount reaches the same as the downloaded amount, I have attained a 1:1 ‘share ratio’. In otherwords, I have given back as much as I have taken. From that point on you are giving back more than what you have taken, which is encouraged, though not necessary karma-wise.

Etree is an open tracker, meaning anyone can use it and ‘career stats’, if you will, are not kept. Lossless Legs, however, keeps track of what you take and give, and they strongly encourage a 1:1 ratio. Some trackers willl even go so far as to ban people who do not equally share what they take.

Eh…I still don’t know how the parethesis and such works or where I can look up my ratio but it doesn’t matter. I’m just going to leave the files up on the torrent after they’re downloading and let people go to town on them. That should take care of things. I’m doing this from my work computer and I’m making a copy of the files I download to take home and burn anyway. Good times.

Is there no column that shows how much has been downloaded/uploaded on your BT client? This number is usually 400MB-1GB+, depending on length (and bitrate?) of each show.

Don’t want to hijack, but has anyone heard of .bin files? Will Gomplayer play them?

^Steveo in a week this will make more sense…the more you use bittorrent the better handle you will have on it.
