Last night I saw the Flaming Lips at the Hammerstein Ballroom and it was a blast! However they played pretty much the same set I saw at Wakarusa plus and minus a few things. They did the same opening and closing songs (Race for the Prize and Spoonful Weighs a Ton) and there was even a marriage proposal, just like Waka! I had a really great time, but couldn’t help to be a little dissappointed that it was pretty much the same show. I was talking to some kids before the show who were at the show the previous night at the Hammerstein and heard there was an audience participation lazer pointer experiement. At at first I didn’t really mind that I missed it, because I knew the show was going to rock anyway! But then Wayne mentioned it a few times and how cool it was and I was like, I didn’t care before, but now you’re kind of rubbing it in, and i felt kinda gypped. Then I was hoping they would do something awesome to make up for it, but no such luck, all Wayne said was “We’ll do somethign cool another time and you’ll have to come.” whatever that means. They played In the Morning of the Magicians which they don’t play much in concert, so that was actually pretty neat. The 2nd encore was unexpected, they played You Have to Be Joking (autoposy of the Devil’s Brain) from Hit to death in the Future Head. And I thought it was a rarity and whatnot. Then i found out that they played it the night before!!!
In a way I kind of knew it wouldn’t be much different and I did have a really amazing time. I mean all their songs they played are the ones that have been my soundtrack lately, so I didn’t even mind that they were the ones they picked. I would have liked them to have busted out that UFO thing though. oh well. Rock on until next time.
Here are some photos from the show…
