Free Speech in Schools?

I thought this was interesting. Turns out the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against the student.

What does everyone think about the 1st Amendment in schools?

Do you, or should, lose some of your 1st Amendment rights when you enter school grounds?

This whole case is pretty stupid IMO.
The student putting up the sign and the schools reaction.

Free Speech is important, but I don’t think this has anything to do with free speech in schools.
It’s more about how dumb kids are these days.

When you are at school and at a school sponsored event, you just can’t act like an idiot and then say “It’s free speech man”

If this kid really wanted to make a statement about free speech, he could have done many things, but promoting drug use?
“Bong hits for Jesus” is the best you came up with?
Really?
This is how you test Free Speech?

Kids get away with everything. Now they want free speech? This country has become a bunch of winer’s and sissy’s!

Not only was he promoting illegal drug use, he brough religion into it by mentioning Jesus.

Yeah, it’s not like he was sending an important message or trying to accomplish anything (other than to maybe see how far he could take this).

But what a hot-button issue.

There are no rights in schools these days. It’s amazing how they’ve become virtual prisons since when I was there. Not that I mind…most of the kids would abuse their freedoms anyway…they don’t really know any better.

I agree that there has never been free speech in schools. Teachers don’t even have that right so never mind students trying to speak their minds.

I don’t have free speech at work, so why should students have it at school?

Actually, it’s the concept of “free speech” that’s the problem. If you define “free speech” as some absolute right to say anything you like without repurcussions from anyone, then the concept doesn’t exist. All social “systems” will impart restrictions upon you, your actions and your speech based upon the definitions of that particular system. Once you agree to engage or be a part of that system, those rules apply to you.

There’s no “free speech” even in the Ohkeepa.

FUCK THE POLICE

will everybody just shut up and do what they’re told already?

the terrorists are winning.

did you know that if you smoke pot you are directly funneling money to afghani and iraqi terrorists?

its a fact folks.

as for free speech in schools…when kids get in trouble they will do anything they can to get out of it. im suprised his parents are supporting him in this. he’s just a stoner trying to push limits.

i’m pretty sure the kid wasn’t on school property.

^
True, the article said “public sidewalk” outside the school.

So when the president tried to confiscate it, couldn’t the kid have just given him a big fuck you?

whats the problem then?

i havent followed this.

Yeah I think 1st amendment is revoked by stupidity… or any amendment.

Still, “Bong hits for Jesus” is pretty funny. Maybe the guys got a future as a comedian at the local penitentiary.

The courts have decided numerous times before that public schools do not have completely free speech. It makes sense too, because what goes on in a school is by and large considered to be government sponsored.

yeah, and i think that’s fairly reasonable. however, it was not a school event and it wasn’t on school property. unless, it was a school field trip i don’t see how they have any authority over his actions.

even though he was off-campus, the courts still considered it to be a “school sanctioned event”

It was a school sponsored event.

The kids went to school and then they let them out to watch the torch go by.

My question is, What the hell were these kids doing watching this in the first place?

Yeah, the Olympics and blah blah blah,…

If I got let out of school, I’m gone.
I can think of alot of other things to do then stand in the cold and watch somebody run past me carrying a stick that’s on fire.

if that’s the case their judgement sounds pretty reasonable.
