Fresh Mike Interview---> New Phish Album On The Way!

dartmouthindependent.com/sit … _territory

Posted on Phish’s Facebook page earlier today. Mike makes reference to the imminent recording of a new Phish album:

“One of the reasons I wanted to do a slightly shorter tour was so that I would not as much take away from the time I have before Phish plays again to work on another new album. So I’m kind of juggling a few things."

Discuss.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

It sounds like plans for summer have not been etched in stoned just yet, as the article was written just a couple of days ago. So that was a small let down, but at least we know there is something happening.

Also, I am very interested to know what he means when he says they are looking for new ways to record, and what sounds like basically a new way of writing music for Phish. Time will tell the tale I suppose…

To me, the way he worded that makes it sound like he’s working on a new Mike Gordon album more than a new Phish album. Honestly, I’m not too big on the idea of Phish recording more material at this point. I mean, they’ve barely had any time to let this new material stretch its wings and develop into great stuff.

man im pumped for 2010

so are we thinking less dates, harder raging?

I was just thinking yesterday that Phish should record an album of nothing but Gordon tunes. They should it that way once.

PS That picture of Mike is fabulous

Agreed, unfortunately that will never happen.

Sad but true :frowning:

Yep. 12-15 dates on one half of the United States of America for the first part of the summer, then 12-15 more on the other half of the United States of America for the second half of summer. Possibly a festival to close things, but I wouldn’t bank on it like in the late-90s.

pretty sure mike was referring to a new solo album on the way.

I totally think they should work on new material. I’m of the opinion that bands’ songwriting output declines in quality from lack of practicing the craft. Art tends to benefit from attention from the artist, and I think if they were to record this year, there’d be a writing momentum they’d capitalize on. IMO each Phish writing cycle since Hoist has sounded like they’re starting from scratch.

But I agree that it sounds like a Mike Gordon album he’s talking about, and I doubt Phish will record this year, even though I think it’d be good for their songwriting. At this stage of the game there’s no reason* for these guys to spend on unnatural amount of time together overworking themselves, like they would have in say, 1990 or something.

[*that is, no reason except to make Phish awesomer.]

Yeah, that sounds like he’s referring to another a Mike album, not a new Phish album. And personally I think that’s a good thing… I rather liked Green Sparrow, probably more than I liked Joy.

Screw this. Give me more dates. Lazy bums and their one-month tours…

i support this

No  necessary. I do remember hearing something previously about a new Mike album for this year. I do not think Phish will put another out this year. But will they unload some new material live? Absolutely.

"letting go and accepting the groove as it’s happening, rather than fighting against it, and allowing the joy in music to come out, no matter how weird or silly the music is.”

::starting to come to realization of maybe only late summer dates:: :eh:

Posted this in ‘Summer Tour Rumors,’ but yeah, he’s talking about another solo album:

Mike is obviously back in the studio again, which I happen to think is very cool. I loved The Green Sparrow. I love all his work with the Trio and Kottke as well. I love the fact that they are all embracing their own spirits and loves right now.

I love that Trey is soaring right now with TAB. I think these shows have been absolutely spectacular, and they have completely blown me and my expectations away.

I really hope that Page and Fish are doing the same thing, getting everything out right now.

What this will do to Summer tour? I’m not really sure. However, I think this will give them more time to embrace their other loves in order to come back to their first love. Do I think that Phish will get in the studio very soon? I hope not. Like someone already said, they haven’t really gotten a chance to explore Joy, and I, for one, am ready for that. I would love to at some point be able to say that I enjoy Time Turns Elastic. I want for them to really explore themselves as people and as a band.

That’s what the solo touring is all about. It’s also why its so important. We might not get dates as swiftly as we the fans might want, but that’s okay, because when they do return to tour ---- it will be better and more exploratory than ever!
