Papa Mali and Galactic = A SHIT LOAD OF FUN!

I saw Papa Mali and Galactic in Philly, and honestly, I wasn’t that impressed.
First, I just really disliked Papa Mali. Reason for this being all his songs sound the same, with his his reverb and delay while using a slide, along with very similar bluesy forms in the songs I heard. On top of that, I didn’t think the chick playing bass could really play, nor was she playing anything interesting.
Galactic, I had high hopes for considering I really dig all of their studio stuff (this was my first show of theirs). It goes without saying that Stanton Moore kicks ass, and Ben Ellman can wail on sax like no other. I also liked Rich Vogel on the B3.
However, when it really came down to it, I realized most of the songs pretty much were built on a singular repetitive bass/guitar line, with solos over it. Don’t get me wrong, they were tight, and Stanton really gives energy to the thing, but I was bored by the lack of variety in song structure and lack of energy in the guitarist.
So overall, I was kind of dissapointed, but I did end up having an ok time. There are many much worse acts out there.
