Gene Ween talks about Phish covering Roses Are Free

yeah really.

I still love Ween, (June 25 Aragon in Chicago!) but, I do think he is off base a bit on that comment…and %98 of jambands do suck.

i agree a lot with his sentiment. i like maybe all of 5 jambands (if you consider phish and tGD jambands). and i think that ween fucking rules.

I tend to agree with this. I know many great musicians who aren’t particularly into Phish, but can’t deny that they are incredible, versatile musicians.

If I pull out the claymore, yer shit out of luck!

:unamused:

really?

but yeah, Gene can suck my pene

(I don’t really mean that just wanted to post it  )

(I don’t listen to any jambands besides Phish and GD either, reallly)

Did you guys even read what he said? They guy asked the question, “How do you feel about getting roped into that whole jamband scene”, to which Gene replied “all that jamband shit makes me want to puke”. If you feel, that by saying that Gene is dissing Phish, then YOU are saying that Phish is just “jamband shit”.

The guy didn’t ask him “How do you feel about Phish covering Roses are Free, or do you like Phish”? He just asked about the jamband scene, which does suck for the most part (and I’m sure Trey or any decent musician would probably agree with that sentiment). Gene still loves the Dead and obviously knows Phish on a personal level that none of us do, so I kind of wish some of you would quit misinterpreting what he said to suit your own anti-Ween agendas.

BTW, you want to see some trash talking about Phish, look no further some members comments in this thread here:

I’m not going to name any names, but yeah…I’ll leave it at that.

^^ Good point. He really wasn’t asked what his opinion of Phish’s music. I’m sure if he was asked if he thought Phish were good musicians, he would agree. Gene seems sensible enough to recognize Phish’s talent, even if he may not necessarily enjoy their music.

WEEN Fucking RULES

AARON and Mickey are awesome people

Trey likes it when people talk shit about Phish. He said so in the movie.

I know you heart Ween Devin and I’m in no way trying to slight that, however…

…He said he liked Trey but not his (aka Phish’s) music. He called it jamband shit and referenced vomiting. Sounds like a slam to me, lol

I interrpreted it that way also.

Ollie…I heart, dick and balls Ween and Phish. I can’t speak for Gener, but maybe Gene kind of gets upset that, despite a legacy of making some of the best albums ever for the last 20 years, they still have to get asked about Phish every time some college hippy interviews them. I’d start to get resentful too.

^Now we’re getting somewhere. He’s probably tired of being asked about it.

And besides, the first thing he says is that he likes Trey. I don’t see how he bashes Phish at all.

Agreed, typical “hipster” response by Gene.

Well he DOES say “I like Trey AS A PERSON” inferring the music of Phish sucks

I mean I can kind of understand. The only bands I like in that genre is Grateful Dead and Phish anyway, with a bit of WSP, Benevento Duo and MMW thrown in for good measure. Other than that its pretty crappy IMO.

Yeah honestly if I approach it from a selfish perspective, the only think in the world Gene Ween has ever done that has benefited my life is write Roses Are Free. I hate all their music, including their version of this song. But it’s my favorite Phish cover. It’s a big  when the only reason anyone’s ever heard of you is because a band has covered one of your songs about 15 times and arranged it into one of the greatest songs of all time from a semi disaster. Just my $.02

lol at this thread and people getting defensive.

It’s quite simple actually. Primus and Ween used to be of about equal popularity. Through his simple charisma Les Claypool saw an in with the jam scene. He was embraced and went on to different projects and greater popularity. To put it nicely Aaron on the other hand lacks marketability. He was Passed Over  AND HE’S PISSED OFF. You see Les, and previously Trey got to swim in the proverbial pool of goyum hotties. While er…Let’s just say; no one ever asked Mike to be in Oysterhead. I hope that wasn’t too offensive. Imagine if Gener looked like Anthony Kiedis. Put The Coke On My Dick would still be on the Billboard

I might be guilty though. I liked Ween in 1992 and had the cassette of Pure Guava when Push The Daisies was in regular college radio rotation. While I was getting into Phish in 1991. It wasn't until Summer '99 and getting Roses on my B-day that I felt the urge to explore Ween more thoroughly. The raucousness of a Ween show in the late '90s was similar to; yet not as pretty as a '92 Phish show. It was the high energy mosh pits that threw you back to punk adolescence, and raw emotion. I love both these bands Gener is just a jealous albiet super talanted guy.
