okay, it’s getting to be that time of year where people start sporting the bathing suits and going to the beach, pool, etc…so I’ve started up working out to get into shape because one of the things that I fear the most is looking like a fatty when i take my shirt off and go to the beach! So, for the last month or so I’ve been doing some lifting & going on runs to lose the extra pounds that your body naturally wants to store when the seasons change into winter, which for Florida isn’t all that long but damn, I’ve always had this habit of slacking off during the colder season and not working out at all, and it sure doesn’t take my body long to put on those extra pounds! -I hate that shit and it’s gets worse the older you get so damn it, I’m just gonna have to learn to consistently work out all year long. Ofcourse that’s easier said than done but one thing I’ve always been dedicated to is telling myself, ‘okay, it’s close to summer time so it’s time to suck it up and put the work in’.
So, I HATE the thought of having to go on a run, but truth be told, it’s just the thought of knowing I’m gonna have to go on a run later after work that I hate, because once I actually get out there and start it, it’s a real good feeling, a great natural stress reliever, and even better rewarding feeling once you’re done…geez, almost sounds like I’m describing good sex haha. But seriously, back to the point, If it weren’t for music, my runs wouldn’t last nearly as long as they do, and maybe I wouldn’t run at all so thank God for music because running is really the only way I can shed pounds cause just plain dieting never really works for me. I have to go put the physical work in.
So, when I run, I go every other day so needless to say I listen to a lot of music, but the same shit gets old. I prefer to listen to hard shit because it fires me up and makes me feel like a total badass. Shit like Pantera, Metallica, Sepultura, etc… Overall, I find the heavy shit inspires me to work out harder and longer -I guess cause the music is so heavy, loud, and fast is the reason.
I never really worked out to phish before, but the other night I was thumbing thru all the heavy shit in my collection and was not really feeling any of it, so i thought, 'fuck it, phish takes you on journeys and is inspirational, so i loaded up one of the '09 hampton shows and said “let’s do this”! So, I went on my run, and have to say that I had a good one, and enjoyed the music as I ran. However, I’m not sure why, but I think that as I was running, I was paying more attention to how tired I was getting, how much longer I still had to go to complete my regular goal and destination, how i could feel the muscles in my legs becoming exhausted and aching.
Now, with all that being said, all that same shit still happens when i listen to the heavy shit, as they say, you really can’t avoid the “no pain, no gain” part of the equation, but I guess as I mentioned the heavy shit just helps distract me more. So, I have a few theories on this: 1) I’m thinking maybe the reason was is because I chose a live show, where phish goes into improv and the tunes are much longer 2) maybe the phish I listened to had more songs like ‘driver’ & ‘lifeboy’, vs faster tunes like ‘first tube’, or 3) maybe phish isn’t the best workout music to choose but I did enjoy it as I ran so I think it’s more reason #1 or 2. Plus, I’d be willing to bet that some of the OKPers here that I’ve read run marathons probably go on runs and listen to phish as they go all the time.
So, the point of this thread is I get tired of the heavy shit, I get tired of the punk rock shit, i want me some motivating phish to listen to when i go on runs, and I was hoping to get some playlist suggestions from OKPers who love working out to phish. I want recommendations on sure-fire, can’t-miss phish tunes that I can listen to that will keep me motivated like the heavy shit does, and less thinking about the pain that’s involved. My runs are about 60 minutes, so feel free just to list songs, or maybe give me a personal playlist that you personally like to use when you workout. i have every phish album in the history of civilization so creating these actually playlists from your suggestions and putting them on the ipod won’t be a prob at all, so let’s hear it fellow OKP workout phish listening pals, gimme some songs and playlists of the greatest band to ever walk the planet earth…phish!
