glowstick question

so i was wondering, when glowstick wars happen, where do they come from, does the band pay for it to happen, or do people just buy them in bulk and bring them to the shows?

i looked on ebay for glowsticks and they are pretty damn cheap if you buy lots at a time. I was thinking it would be a really good thing to sell at shows to get money for the next show, bc its legal unlike most things people sell to get them selves to the next show. however im sure alot of venues sell their own glowy things and wouldnt want u taking their buisness.

im pretty sure people just show up w/ glosticks, i dont think venues sell them.

Venues do not want you having glowsticks. They do not want you throwing them. At many venues audience members are “patted-down” when they enter, if you’re caught with a glowstick, it will be confiscated.

Glowsticks are dangerous. At one point a fan sued Phish becuase he lost some of his eyesight after a glowstick hit him in the eye. Glowrings are much safer.

That aside, I love glowstick wars.

weapon of mass destruction or a trippy toy… you decide

The very first Glowstick War I saw at the Wents Hood was absolutely fantastic.Although Ive seen others that were cool,I hate the idea cos unfortunately alot of people were just winging them and people were getting hit…hard. And people throw that shit on stage and that just always urked me the wrong way.At 2/28/03 I could tell Kuroda was actually using some Brighter combinations to drown out the glowsticks, which is the opposite of what he used to do when they werent out of hand.I think after a while, the band didnt even want anyone to have them.

trey got drilled in the face by a glowstick at bonnoroo

that sucks man

yeah, they can be good and they can be bad.

at 10k, during the Phil & Friends set break, right in front of the soundboard, there was a group of about a dozen old dead heads with duffle bags full of glowsticks…the most i’ve ever seen in one spot at a time, BIG duffle bags too. they said they brought in 9000. that’s a lot. and the glowstick wars during the second set that night were pretty damn cool.

however, here is the question that me and my girlfriend came up with at 10k, one that will be pondered for generations to come:

which came first, the glowstick or the jam band???

think about it.

They get started by the fans. You can usually see the the main spot where they are all coming from. Someone brings in a box or a bag of them and tosses handfuls of them out. Then other people get them and it spreads like cancer. A very fun type of cancer though.

I love fun cancer.

alright well it sounds legit for me to do then, ill probably buy either 1000 or 2500 on ebay for this upcoming hookahville.

Don’t buy them and SELL them.

No one will buy them from you. I am just warning you.

The precedent has been set. Someone takes it upon themself to buy a shit ton of glow sticks/rings and just starts throwing them. That’s all.

Don’t mean to rain on your parade but you will not profit. Why would anyone buy them from you if they can just pick one up off the ground and throw it?

If you want to swing shit in the lot stick to the old standbys of food, beer or drugs…

i wasnt really thinking about selling them i just wanted a few of my friends to all throw down to have a cool glowstick war at hookahville in 3 weeks. And your right no one would buy those…

but i bet plenty of people would buy glow balls…

lol

I like tortilla wars too…

^^I have to say that there are plenty of people buying glowstick/rings… I happen to see plenty of sales at the 10klf / 'roo/ reunion, etc…

What sells the most though, are the blinking balls or things you can spin/twist and they make many ‘o’ colors… I am not sure of the name.

Now, you will not make alot of cash, but there are plenty of ‘ladies’ who want’em and there are plenty of ‘men’ who will buy them for said ladies… Need to have fun with them anyhow…
Throw around but not on stage please!!

^YEAH!! We bought one for like 5-10 bucks… I spun that thing for hours…Than I spun some more…lol…

Wait are you serious?? Jam bands, man. I don’t remember hearing about glowsticks until at least the 90s.

Glowsticks were around far before that^ they had some in the old DEAD vids I have seen from the day…/

“Although glowsticking has it roots in the 1980s underground rave scene, it has since become a separate cultural phenomenon that can be found throughout the general electronic dance music world.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glowsticking

“Lightsticks have various purposes: they are used in the military, by recreational divers doing night diving, by marching band conductors for night time performances, and also used for entertainment at parties (especially raves), concerts, and dance clubs. Glowsticking refers to the use of glowsticks in dancing. A further application are light effects, especially Balloon-carried light effects.”

I couldn’t get an exact date, but I saw in a few places “over 30 years ago”. That was as close to a date I could get.

^Nice freaking work Buster… .NICE!
