Good Morning Oh Kee Pa (Part 1)

Thanks Glenn, I think you’re right about that stuff … last night I actually forced myself to do some recording. I tracked rhythm guitar over a metronome for a while, on a song that I’ve never attempted to record before. I didn’t get a good take I don’t think, but I feel more confident about the song. Which is huge progress for me these days. I hear you about new gear … I spent much of the evening frustrated with trying to get good guitar sounds, and I’ve been meaning to upgrade my rig forever. I used to think it was my pickups, then I started blaming my amp. Now I believe it’s really both of 'em.

Good morning dudes, trying to ignore the snow and ice that’s reportedly on its way. I like snow, but freezing rain and slush and ice are not your friend.

Especially cuz my kids were watching with me and cannot relate whatsoever to 80s rock.

There’s a weird “coolness” thing with music where it’s impossible for them to like music that could be cheesy. It’s like artists must be considered cool before they’re considered good. One of many reasons why video really did kill the radio star.

I do like what he did in Van Halen, musically, but his stage presence annoys me a lot. His banter is just awkwardly trying too hard to be funny and cool, and always falls short of both funny and cool.

Eh, I can’t speak for that part of it. I’m not a big Van Halen guy in general…but I can see folks missing DLR to make way for Sammy…but Sammy seems more talented overall and definitely with a better voice. But, yeah, there’s something to be said about bands just playing the fucking songs.

And for the musicians: I was reminding myself the other day about how much I dislike “fade out” endings a song…where it just get quieter and then it ends. I always find these dumb and lazy but then I wondered why musicians do them. I’d imagine many of them are a studio cutting off the ending of a song for time constraints but many are clearly done on purpose, and even done in the middle of a guitar solo. Is this just laziness by the artist or being unable to think of how to properly end a song? Maybe time constraints? There’s gotta be a good reason for it. Fade outs always seem empty to me.

I hate fade out endings! Also Kevin it’s cool that you get to watch concert DVDs with your kids. My family doesn’t hang out much together and I’m the only musical one. Well, we should count my sister because she’s into musicals but that’s also a lot of acting. Shes more of an actress than musician, ya know? And she’s wrapped up in her thing and I do mine. Hhhhhhhh trying to move out!

Gmokp,

I like most of my students on Monday, but by Friday I really am done with some of them.

Thanks Drew, this line brought a smile to my face.

Happy Monday OKP! I stayed up late watching the Oscars and then had mild insomnia. Good thing my morning coffees are in full effect and I’m feeling productive still.

Streaming some live tennis whilst I work on some documents this morning. My favorite player is defending his Dubai (UAE) title this week, and they are 9hrs ahead of the Eastern Time Zone.

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning OKP, miss bantering with you guys. Trying to get on my computer at home before I leave for work because my job is such a whirlwind of activity that there’s never time to get online whilst there. Hope you all are kicking ass and getting ready for some summer Phish dates. I could use some myself if for no other reason than to give me hope that this ridiculous cold will eventually go away.

Morning Pa, Morning Doug,

I sure can use some oPhishal dates to look forward to. Although it seems highly likely that Watkins Glen is gonna happen in Aug and just the thought of that is making my day. (Disclaimer: I don’t have any connections nor sources)

I have reached a new “low” temp reading on my car’s dash!

Never had a negative values before; kinda kewl I suppose.

I hate fade out endings!

Yeah! No more fade-outs!

Also Kevin it’s cool that you get to watch concert DVDs with your kids. My family doesn’t hang out much together and I’m the only musical one.

There were a few times when I would kinda force my parents to watch a concert on video and they’d be good sports and watch it but it’s rare to really WANT to watch it together. One concert I feel transcends all is Stop Making Sense…you don’t have to know or like any Heads music but that concert is mesmerizing to watch. You can’t take your eyes off that band. I’m curious if it could pass the “kid test” where it could be weird and quirky enough to keep them into it.

Never had a negative values before; kinda kewl I suppose.

I think I’ve gotten a negative or two in my car but it’s rare…I think the car is a lil bit warmer than most things. Thermostat said around 5 degrees last night. Supposed to be that way for the rest of February. As long as there’s not much snow left, I’m fine with it.

Never had a car with temp displays until we purchased the Forester last month. A nice feature for sure. Hoping the direction display and GPS will help Marie get around more efficiently, but I doubt it. She just has some difficulty with special relationships and measurements.

Work continues to be challenging, and Marie and I find ourselves yearning to get away on our three day weekends. This weekend, for example, we’re heading into Philly for some flower show, some dining, and some shopping at the Reading Terminal Market.

We used to make the trip every year, but the flower show can get a little tedious because of the crowds. And cell phones have made it worse because everyone is taking pictures of everything. Gets a little annoying because people almost expect you to not get in their way when they’re taking pictures. But if you waited for every one who was taking some picture, you’d never move an inch in any direction.

Because of having these alternate Fridays off, we’re going in for a couple of nights instead of just a day trip to the show, and hanging out in Center City just because we enjoy walking around Philly. The weather isn’t accommodating us with the temps, but we pretty much don’t care. Just be good for the change of scenery and to offset the cabin fever that this month has brought with it.

Our financial advisor is really into organizing marketing events, which most of the time we ignore. But tomorrow night she organized a cooking class with a chef from one of the local restaurants, and Marie and I decided to pick up on this one. We had always thought that once we retired together we would take a cooking class, or a music class, or possibly a movie appreciation class, so we’re going to try this free one out. I can always use some help in the kitchen because in my mind, there are so many herbs and spices that I still don’t know how to use outside of recipes.

Time to get back to a test report. Have a great Tuesday ole OKP.

Morning! I told the clerk at the store last night that hey, at least nobody’s walking around saying ‘it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!’ … but along those same lines, it’s not the snow bothering me; it’s the cold!

Yesterday morning I woke up and my phone’s weather widget said it was -2. But I noticed the sky in the background was still a night sky, which means the app hadn’t updated since sunrise. So I opened it up to get it to update, and it did, and the background sky turned to day, and it still said -2.

Then this morning, it was telling me “-7, last updated 7:40am” … but it refused to update itself a couple hours later. I think it was reveling in telling me -7. Maybe it likes that tune?

Personally, it’s not the cold, it’s the Wind. When those gusts start blowing, I can really feel it.

We used to make the trip every year, but the flower show can get a little tedious because of the crowds. And cell phones have made it worse because everyone is taking pictures of everything. Gets a little annoying because people almost expect you to not get in their way when they’re taking pictures.

Glarg…reading this stuff annoys me. And you KNOW these people will go home, maybe look at those photos once more and then never look at them again. It’s the same with a lot of this…I get SO tired of females wanting me to pose in countless group pictures EVERY time we go to the bar. They can’t just use the photos from the last few times with all the same people? And it’s all so they can post a useless comment on their Facebook and no one spends more than two seconds reading because it’s just like all the hundreds of other “look where I was last night!” posts that everyone seems to put up. But folks never think about this since it’s all about me, me, me…ESPECIALLY when it comes to phones which make all other people around you disappear.

at least nobody’s walking around saying ‘it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!’

Yeah, I’ve had enough of the “weather service trying their darnedest to scare everyone” era that we’re in now. None of them even seem to want to give you the real temperature anymore…it’s always going with the “it feels like this” comment in which it’s always 10 degrees cooler if it’s cold or 10 degrees hotter if it’s hot. Throwing out integrity to get ratings. It’s hard to believe any weather or news service anymore…even people’s phones seem programmed to just give you the most negative forecast rather than actually taking the temperature…I don’t trust those things either.

But wow, I’m out the door whining this morning…here’s something to relax.

After morning, 'Pa.

Understand we’re having weather today. Ain’t that some shit?

A little TV reflection in the wrong thread: Don’t watch much of it after 9pm. There’s not too much that interests me enough to keep my eyes open. Downton Abbey does, and maybe the Good Wife, but if it’s not on between 8 and 9, I generally can’t make it.

That being said, there are a couple of new shows that I’ve gravitated to this year. I’m into Gotham. Great scene this past week where Jada Pinkett Smith’s character plucks her own eyeball out and then steps on it in a close up of squishy greatness. I might have been repulsed if I hadn’t previously read The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosiński. Good show.

The other new show I like is The Flash. Strong ensemble cast with super heroes and super villains. Love this comic book crap. Reminds me of my yout.

Went to dinner at Costco last night with Marie, Roni and her girls. They have really good pizza for 2 bucks a slice and a hot dog and soda deal for a buck fifty. It’s almost like going to the boardwalk for dinner which is always fun.

Cooking class tonight, one more day of work this week and it’s off to Philly. Hope you’re looking forward to the weekend as well.

I love Costco pizza! Sometimes you can just cruise for samples and eat a mini-lunch there, too.

GMOKP,

Real busy at work. We’re in the thick of state ESL testing, so plenty of my kids are missing at any given time, really slowing up what is happening in the classroom. Next, progress reports are coming out soon, so students are scrambling to turn in their late work. I’m now a full month into teaching all the classes and it’s chugging along.

Recorded some music with my friend last night, I’ll perhaps post a recording when I tweak it a little bit.

Yikes. From what I understand, she’s a character created just for the show, yes? Seems like they’re trying to introduce a lot of “young” Batman villains in this first season. I wonder if they can keep it up.

For me, I’m just watching Better Call Saul and Murdoch Mysteries on CBC (out of Canada) and both air on Monday. Other than those, that’s it until Game of Thrones is started up again.

Went to dinner at Costco last night with Marie, Roni and her girls. They have really good pizza for 2 bucks a slice and a hot dog and soda deal for a buck fifty.

I agree with the pizza thing. I don’t have a membership to Costco or anything but I remember an old co-worker saying the pizza was good there so I checked it out and I’d have to agree. And LARGE slices too.

Been dealing with a cough and lotsa phlegm this week but thankfully it hasn’t expanded into a full-blown cold…let’s how it stays that way.

^^Where are you teaching Drew? Been out of the loop here for a while…

Good morning dudes.

Morning Pa! Saturday! Rock it!

Good morning!!!

The talk of cellphones reminded me of this, which you may have already seen and discussed here:
http://news.distractify.com/culture/craigslist-surveillance-restaurant/

Stevo…sending good vibes for your dealings with the law. What a load of bullshit. I think it must have been the deer’s stash.

Stevo’s post and the article above stir up irritation in me, towards our self-obsessed society. Last month, I went with a group of friends to celebrate one of our birthday’s at Olive Garden and we had to get up in the middle of the very busy and crowded dining room to take a few group pictures in front of the fireplace. Now, I’m definitely not keen on taking pictures anyway, so I will own that, but I found it terribly embarrassing and pretty unnecessary. I didn’t want to do it but I chose being embarrassed over being a spoiled sport a-hole. I just kept making jokes about how we weren’t actually on vacation in Italy, needing to take a pic in front of an ancient Tuscan hearth we visited.

Morning Pa! Made a nice brunch for my parents and I, of French toast, made with cinnamon raisin swirl bread, sautéed bananas, and bacon. 'twas delicious.

P.S. that distractify site may be my new favorite

Mordin 'Pa. Got a hed coad an decided to stay home ta nurse it.

Plus I sit in a big open office with no dividing walls and I’d be bound to spew all sorts of nasty sneeze mist into the air, let alone at the two meetings I had scheduled for today. Can see people being grateful that I stayed away.

I can do some work from here and monitor my email with Outlook webmail, so it’s definitely the better choice to going in and feeling miserable there.

Philly was a blast, Marie and I had a lot of fun. Worst part was the 15 degree weather. Made walking around Center City a chore. Love that part of Philly. Great architecture, great history. Flower show was better than most I’ve seen, possibly because the theme was ‘the movies’, highlighting Disney and Pixar animation. Plus we bought a membership and got to ‘preview’ the show with less of the crowds. Good time overall.

Time for some herbal tea. When I’m sick is the time I really appreciate the stuff. Later keds.

Feel better, Bill!

Sometimes when I’m sick I will take even just plain ol Hot Water … something about the hot fluids and phlegm.

Other times I go and make a big ol’ pot of chicken soup from scratch. By the time I’ve finished the soup (2-3 days later), I’m feeling much better!
