GRAB or TAB?

Ok guys, and girls this is it, which one did you enjoy more and what shows did you catch. I am only talking about 2006, not anything prior.
My favorite is far and away Trey’s new band as of fall 06. I will say though that my expectations for the GRAB show I saw were huge. I had a blast and it was defanitly worth the 5 hour drive, but all in all it could have been better. I still can’t believe they only played one long set instead of two. That really let me down when I realized thats what I was getting halfway through the show. All in all though I had a great time.
I went into the TAB show with very very low expectations. Before this show I had yet to hear a post-Phish solo Trey show that really struck me. I was really just looking at this show as a chance to hang out with my brother. I was totaly blown the fuck away. The review I gave is floating around here somewhere, but it was an amazing show.
So which one did you enjoy more? GRAB or TAB?

I saw GRAB do two monster sets and have not seen TAB, so guess which one I voted for.

Basically this poll should read:

Trey + Mike or just Trey?

How can you not choose Mike?

I can’t really vote.

I haven’t heard 2006 70VP.

But… I was kind of dissapointed how Trey could turn The Duo with Mike Gordon into a Trey back up band.

Well, I chose just Trey, because at the show I was at, mike was there, so it was a win win situation.

The GRAB show I saw was good, but not spectacular.

I wouldn’t call 2006 TAB. I would say TAB was the line-up he had back in what, 2002 or so when he released Plasma and it fucking ruled. To me, 70VP just doesn’t have NEAR the same magic, to say the least. At the same time, I was also disappointed about how GRAB turned out to be another Trey show, pretty similar to the one I had seen just a few months earlier. And like Will said, it sucks that the Duo ended up being nothing more his backup band. The 70VP shows were a 2 night stay at the Tabernacle in Atlanta and the first night was spectacular. He brought the horns out and we were basically treated to a TAB show. 2nd night was a total let down and I wish I hadn’t wasted my time with it. Honestly, I wouldn’t say I was terribly impressed with anything Trey’s done this year or since TAB back a few years ago. In fact, I decided I’m done seeing solo Trey until he gets himself together, musically speaking. I’m glad he’s taking a break. If it’s not to prepare for the reunion, hopefully, it’s to prepare something worthy of what he’s capable of. Based strictly on post Coventry projects, I’d rather see Mike than Trey, hands down…so I shan’t vote for either.

i liked the trey show i saw this fall more than the GRAB show i saw this summer

idk more energy, better jams, the acoustic divided sky and what not was insane!

Trey fall tour!

Treys band from the 06 fall tour is defanitly NOT 70 volt, so I would not call it that. I don’t think even Trey is calling it that anymore, so I feel like it’s safe to say TAB instead of calling it “Trey’s current linup”. Also it sounded better for the purposes of this poll question.

^I hear ya. When most people see TAB, though, they’re gonna immediately think 10-piece, horns, and Plasma since that’s how they were billed. I think he’s just billed as Trey Anastasio now, no? Not that it matters. I’m just bored

now its basically Trey Anastasio

no TAB or 70VP

but yea i am kinda p.oed how Trey used Mike and the Duo as a backing band, not as a equally shared spotlight thing

but it dont matter cuz phish will be back soon

I don’t think it was some evil plot of Treys to make GRAB a primarily Trey song oriented band. It just happens that Trey has the best songs out of all of them, and the most taboot, so they chose to play more of his songs than anyone elses. However, at the show I saw there was at least 2 Mike songs, 1 Duo song and 3 covers. The jamming was very evenly based around Trey and Mike, and in terms of the Duo song, completely around Marco. Duo songs just don’t work so well with a guitarist and Mike doesn’t have many songs, so that is why it is primarily Trey songs. I don’t really know what you people expected, but if you don’t want Trey songs when you are going to see Trey, than maybe you shouldn’t go see him anymore.

I wouldn’t go so far to say that Trey has the best songs. The Duo has some really great stuff and I haven’t cared for anything Trey’s done since Plasma…and I’d be willing to bet it was Trey that called all the shots.

I thought I was going to see GRAB, not Trey…or honestly, I wouldn’t have gone. With musicians as talented as the 4 of them are, I expected something pretty spectacular. What we got wasn’t terrible by any means, but I feel the exploratory potential of The Duo known for their improv jamming was left virtually untapped. Ohhh, the things they coulda done :-/ And as for seeing Trey I already decided I was done for a while. He just isn’t doing it for me anymore. I really hope he can get it together.

^^

The idea I am thinking is The Duo with Mike Gordon absolutely raged.

The Duo with Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio sounded just like any other Trey Anastasio band.

What I was hoping for was The Duo with Gordon soung, and Trey was added to the mix. That would have been killer to just a free-form show, no lyrics.

Trey completely changed the sound of that band to sound like just another one of his 70 Volt Parade pairings.

well put will, well put

I just don’t see Trey telling Mike or Marco or Joe how to play. They played like they did because the music called for it, and it’s good music taboot. I never heard Marco, Mike or Joe playing anything that was less than brilliant the whole time. Maybe I just got a really great GRAB show.

KIDS KIDS KIDS

Do you remember back in the spring of 99 when Trey and Page played those shows with Phil and his amazing friends?? Do you remember how it felt like they were meshing and playing together, rather than it being half of Phish coming in to take over Phil’s scene?? Or rather than half of Phish trying to stay out of the way of Phil’s scene??

Well, GRAB should have been that way, but wasn’t. I didn’t listen to many of the GRAB shows, but I felt like The Duo were holding back and didn’t want to step on Trey’s toes. Granted there were some GREAT jams that they did, but these were far between what felt like Trey And His New Band rather than GRAB like it was billed as. GRAB should have been way more improvisational and way more collectively improvisational, considering how ridiculously talented all the players are.

As for Trey’s current line-up…I agree that they are his best line-up post-Phish, but they are still nowhere near how great TAB was. It still feels like a group of people, barring a few players, who don’t know how to improvise well and just follow Trey through jams and each song’s changes like dogs on a leash.

Anyway, I’m abstaining from voting, but just wanted to get in my two cents.

I saw both GRAB and TAB

I gotta go with TAB.
I had much more fun at the Trey show.
The GRAB show just sounded weird to me.
Like the Duo really didn’t know what to do and Mike just trying to hold it all together.

So I vote for Trey in the Fall. I had a blast.

Fall Tour > Summer Tour

no mention of Jeff Sipe in this thread. Trey a certain style he likes 70VP and TAB 2006 drummers, and Jeff Sipe is playing in that style but I guess it’s the fills or something that is pushing Trey, becuase this Fall Tour is sounding really good!
