Grayfolded/Infrared Roses

I’ve always been interested in the idea of bands editing down live/improvisational material to produce ‘studio’ albums, so when I was reading about Grayfolded and Infrared Roses on Wikipedia just now, my brain was picked like a banjo. Does anybody have these/has heard these?? Are they any good?? I ask this mostly because I like the Dead but I’m not going to spring the money to buy these, assuming they’re even still in print.

If you have nothing to say about any of that, what would you think about Phish having something similar?? There are various ‘mixes’ of songs like Ghost, Tweezer, and whatnot, but I mean like official mixes or releases of Phish improvisation. What got my mind thinking about this was hearing The Horseshoe Curve, which has a few songs that were picked out of jams from TAB tours. Of course, then there’s ‘Montana’ from A Live One and ‘Inner Tube’ from Plasma which are portions of lengthy jams…but I digress.

i’m pretty sure my brother has the one comprised of nothing but various Drums > Space jams into one long ambient listen.

i don’t have it though and he loses things easily but we listened to it once and it was good. Very spacey…and drummy.

Greyfolded is amazing. I can’t say this same for Infrared Roses.

That’s It For the Other One on

Greatness.

^Word. All the basic tracks from Anthem are taken from a live show.

I like both of those Dead edit albums. Infrared Roses is by far the best thing the Dead did since Terrapin Station, in my opinion, but that’s not saying much.

Grayfolded gives a great sense of continuity between the different era’s of the Dead. I think John Oswald edited this. You can hear all the “Pluderphonics” stuff he did online, these days. That stuff is pretty wild.

when i got grayfolded, i was pumped about the idea of a bunch of darkstars meshed into one monster. unfortunately i was hugely disappointed by the effort. mostly space, drums and echos. i probably gave it one full listen and then relistened to a couple tracks and it has sat idle ever since. boo.

^ That’s how I felt too upon hearing it. I’d rather just hear one great Dark Star all the way through.

Do it.

OK.
