Happy Birthday Bill and Drew!!

I know I’m late but happy birthday dudes. Hope they were swell.
Damn…I’m late too. Happy B-day guys.
HAPPY BELATED YOU EX-AQUARI!

Better late than never right?

I celebrated with the family and some friends on Saturday night. Marie organized a bowling birthday party from 6 to about 830 at one of the local houses, and between the kids and the adults we had eighteen people spread over four lanes, with pizza, wings, beer and soda included in the package. It was a hoot, to be sure, and lots of fun.
At the end, one of my daughters bought this two foot plastic bowling pin bank, and when they all went over to the desk to return their shoes, everyone signed the pin and presented to me for a photo op just before we left to go back to our house for cake and coffee. Don’t have a copy of the picture yet, but will post it when I get a chance.
But that wasn’t even the best part of the night.
Most of you who have any memory for some of the Phish related posts I’ve placed on the OKP, might recall that I enjoy most of my listening while communting to and from work, picking an array of shows for the whole week and going through them one at a time, such that they just place me in the bestest mood before and after my work day.
Well, last Spring the CD and radio in my 04 Accord began acting up, and by the middle of the summer, the CD player stopped working altogether, and the radio works only intermittently now. The player is integrated into the temperature control unit, and to get a factory replacement part will cost me between 6 and 8 bills. I could get COTS replacement, but I didn’t want to change the look of the dash, and it just galled me to have to pay about 700 bucks just to get my CD player working again.
So I’ve been indecisive about fixing it and just putting up with being able to listen to the radio sometimes (Seems to work while the ambient temp is about 30, but as soon as it warms up, it starts cutting out). I did make some attempts to put some dollars aside to get the thing fixed, but then I blew that money on Christmas, so I was back to zero, with no music again going into January. Kind of wondering how much of my inability to deal with work stress is related to the fact that I can’t get my daily dose of Phish in the morning.
Back to the birthday party. Typically, because our dining room can’t fit 18 people all at once, the gkids sit down with the birthday honoree when the cake comes out and the lights go down to sing Happy Birthday. But before this happened, my gson pulled out a surprise gift for me. For Christmas I bought him a hobby level circuit board science set because in the weeks following up to then, he had mentioned to me some of the things that he thought he’d like to do when he grew up, and an electical engineer was something he mentioned, although he confessed he didn’t quite understand what that was.
So before the cake was presented, he went out to his parents car to bring in his ‘project’ and placed it in front of me as everyone gathered round the table, and the flipped this switch on one of the cards snapped into the board. An electronic version of “Happy Birthday” began playing and everyone joined in on the second time it was played round. He was so overjoyed over his ‘gift’ on so many levels. I saw it his face, and I think he understood my happiness as I fought back the tear that I felt in the corners of my eyes.
I actually had two birthday cakes that night, sort of. My son-in-law had spent the earlier part of the day making cupcakes with his two daughters as a surprise for me as well. They decorated about a dozen cupcakes in different color icings and toppings that were appropriate for the day, ie, they were decorated with Smarties and Swedish Fish, some of the candies I always have available when the gkids come over, and with bowling themes, like pins made out of white Good and Plenties and bowling balls made from licorice. It was so cool. And I had to make sure I ate the specific cupcake that was designated as mine, which was supposed to be a portrait of me in M&Ms.
But that’s not where I was going with this. It was actually my kids and my super wife and partner that surprised me the most, because all I really thought or wanted from them is the party itself. But they all got together and signed a birthday card that I opened quite unceremoniously at the table while all of this excitement was going on, that contained almost the whole amount to get the CD player replaced in my car, which really made me well up in sissyboy tears. My kids don’t make tons of money, so I know this gift was difficult for them to contribute to, so it made the gift so much more meaningful to me.
I think I wold have lost it altogether if my seven year old gdaughter, Kendall, didn’t take me by the hand downstairs at that moment to show me something ‘special’. In the family room she had placed that two foot plastic bowling pin on the floor and then directed me to stand in a specific location. She then proceeded to perform two well-executed forward rolls right into the pin, sprawling out on the floor when she finished, as if she were both the pins and the ball after a strike. I was in immediate stitches, and I don’t think my euphoria could have gotten any greater.
I don’t know, most of the time, how I’m lucky enough to deserve these people in my family. They really make me very happy, and even the ‘rough times’ that we’ve had and probably will still have, don’t amount to much in the long run, especially when I have birthdays like this one.

Jesus Bill…you almost had me in tears with that tale. Glad you had a great time with your family. That’s really what it should all be about.
You da man Bill.
And you deserve all of that joy and happiness and tears of joy you old sissy
