Have an accent? Brown skin? Don't go to Arizona.

just again sharing my personal experience, “these people” don’t like to be called mexicans unless they are actually from mexico. there are people from columbia, guatemala, and lots of other places coming here. i’ve had first hand experience with people getting upset with me at work for assuming they were mexicans. kinda like if someone lumped me in with some other white country i wasn’t from. so now i actually ask where they are from.

i’ve heard all the talk about people not coming here legally because they are criminals and stuff, but so far every person i’ve met here in the country illegally have been good people that have their heads on as straight as anyone else i meet on a daily basis. they just wanted to work and provide for their families. where some of them come from you might have to do something criminal to keep your kids fed. here you just have to show up to work and do a good job. that’s gotta be pretty appealing to them.

I am constantly being confused with the other white guy at my school. At first I thought it was funny, “All white guys look the same.” But now I get phone calls for him, people send his teacher aides to my classroom, and people who I know pretty well continue to call me by his name. Gets pretty annoying pretty quickly. I would think the fact that he has big sideburns would help distinguish us, but no.

In the end I suspect is takes a fair amount of exposure to people of other races to develop the ability to distinguish nuances in their facial features. So while I there may be some element of the ignorant white people refering to all the brown skin people as Mexicans, I bet that a study would show that these white people have a legitmately harder time telling these nationalities apart, as they would with Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans and people from East, West, and Central Africa.

Kind of a tengent, but an interesting one I think.

I’m just throwing a bone to all the 75 year old white millionaires who feel like our culture is so weighted down by oppressive political correctness that they can no longer characterize all brown skinned people as being Mexicans.

What I mean is that the issue is really with people who are crossing the U.S./Mexico border illegally.

we’re bobbin on the surface… and the shadow glides below…

ya know… like… that says it all maannn.

In anycase I was just making sure there wasn’t anyone (besides :eh: ) that was in the amnesty camp, with disregard for law and order…

as far as the law and discrimination etc… I’m not bothered by it. boohoo you get stopped and asked for ID. and since 70% of Arizonians were for the law (and you can’t tell me Arizona is 70% white) they are not bothered by it either.

mfmf he’s got a knife…

'scuse me… listening to rift…

carry on…

the old man knooooooowwsss very well…

whoops… can’t. stop. quoting. rift… tunes…

and to make the triple nippple post… I’m not trying to be an ass here (it comes naturally )… I just think that a little inconvenience is sometimes necessary to deal with certain situations… or to be more direct, people that are out of line… such as terrorists and illegal aliens. I don’t think handing authority some jurisdiction to do so will spell the end to all our rights. I feel it gives them the opportunity to do their job, namely to serve and protect law abiding citizens.

call me kooky…

^Why are you so scared of terrorists and illegals? Do you personally know anyone that has been hurt by either? Just curious…because I know more people who have been hurt by cars.

I am not for amnesty. But I’d go with it in a heartbeat over your idea of giving up my rights to protect myself from the boogie man. :unamused:

^doojer we don’t see eye to eye on this topic… and thats OK.

Well, I should note that, here in L.A., gangs are far more of a threat than illegals or terrorists. Should I be allowed to be detained indefinitely if I am wearing a red or blue hat, until I can prove I am not a gang member?

EDIT (I know we don’t see eye to eye, but you just hit us with 3 posts… so, you know I’m gonna respond… :stuck_out_tongue: I don’t take any of it personally.)

I think that this exact thing happened to me… just last yeeeaaaarrrr!!

If it provided the opportunity to clear the streets of gangs, guns, violence… deaths… yes.

OK, yeah, we don’t see eye to eye.

All good man.

I think maybe I’m not as sensitive to the problem because the Mexicans coming over the border here in SoCal aren’t quite as dangerous as the Canadians sneaking over into New Hampshire. :stuck_out_tongue:

 oh well…

even so the lines of who is for or against can’t be drawn simple by race alone… to assume so would be … racist?

I’m sure this isn’t actually the case, but sometimes it seems like you will say most anything to disagree with people who are even slightly conservative. Like, what kind of question is “Why are you so scared of terrorists and illegals?” I tend to somewhat agree with Jeff on this one (although I think the bill needs to be reworded and reworked), and I am not scared of illegals or terrorists necessarily, but I certainly don’t want them here. Terrorists blow up buildings, illegals benefit from society without paying into it. Terrorists are certainly the bigger problem, but that doesn’t mean we should disregard illegal immigration. What’s the point of a law if you aren’t going to enforce it?

(And for the record, doojer, you’re totally cool with me, I’m just respectfully disagreeing with you is all.)

^All good man.

I was legitimately asking the question. I mean, there are a lot of things that kill people more than terrorists or illegal immigrants-- we can’t be giving up a right here and a right there for every threat. I don’t spend everyday worrying about if a terrorist will blow me up or an illegal will steal my job. I am far more likely to have a heart attack from too many double downs ( ) or have my job stolen by a legal American! So, my point is, the fear is ill-proportioned. The ideas of terrorists and illegal immigrants shouldn’t be used as a reason to give away your rights and your freedoms any more than the double down should be made illegal. I am not comfortable with the idea of a police force that is actively seeking out “bad guys” on pure suspicion. They should be vigilant, but we need to respect the rights and the privacy of our citizens.
