Have an accent? Brown skin? Don't go to Arizona.

Pfft. Whatever man. If they have to detain some dude named Abdon so I can sleep better at night, so be it. Freedom isn’t free.

Yes, yes it is. We’re all in this together and we love to take a bath!!!

^hell ya!

here we go with the people complaining and whining like little bitches, OH i’m the victim, blah blah.
“Abdon was eventually released after his wife provided officials with his Fresno County birth certificate.”
“An immigrations official says it is not unusual to ask someone for their birth certificate. They also said Abdon being detained had nothing to do with Arizona’s new immigration law.”

I’m from Arizona aight, something has got to be done, I’m not sayin’ I agree with teh bill 100% butt it’s a good start, sorry If I believe in my country and support it’s legal citizens, I just want anyone that lives in this country to do it legally, whatever that means, but mostly to participate, be accounted for, get involved by becoming a legal citizen! Be proud, any other country expects the same whenever anyone goes across their borders. America is probably the most lenient when it comes to illegal immigrants, we shuld be grateful!

this is a step in the right direction.

we haven’t been as paranoid as we should be lately :unamused:

Congratulations…This may be one of the dumbest things ever written here. But hey, at least you and George Dubya share some viewpoints so that’s a plus.

Hey, maybe the bomb threat in Times Square this weekend was perpetrated by the conservative right to gain support for this AZ bill and for immediate government action at closing the borders.

Didn’t the town’s people go running to the Wizard’s palace after the witch wrote out “Surrender Dorothy” in the sky?

Hahaha, wow… this thread has lately become rife with sarchasms.

EDIT: And don’t give us this “I’m sorry if I believe in my country” and “I’m just proud to be American” bullshit, that’s jingoistic nonsense that has nothing to do with this discussion.

We all “believe in our country.” We are all equally American, here. We are all patriotic. We may not all love what our governments do in our names, but please do not start trying to belittle other people by implying that they are less American, less proud of their country, or less patriotic than you are. America is a great nation not in SPITE of our differences, but BECAUSE of them.

^Actually, he’s got a point. All reports I’m hearing have pointed to a white male as the suspect…

Perhaps it’s time we pass a few laws to go after those white, male, Timothy McVeigh types? I mean, if it puts one wacko behind bars… right?

Got this from my friend who LIVES in AZ:

"1.5 million people in Arizona

1/3 of them are ILLEGAL.

A Mexican drug war spilling over the borders. Law abiding citizens fearing for their lives.

Unless you libtards have a better solution, we’ll handle this one"

Since NOBODY on here lives there…I’ll go with him on this.

Are you really agreeing with a guy who uses “libtards” in a sentence?

On this one…I am going with the guy who lives there. As an Independent, I don’t feel like I HAVE to stay with the same political party that so many people do. Political parties are destroying this Government.

These guys live there…

And, while I don’t live in AZ, I think having lived in SoCal all my life has given me a glimpse into the illegal immigration issue. Where are you, henrietta?

I don’t really care. Just thought I would send along the info. Get you guys going again.

^Haha. Nice.

Well, if by solution you mean and inneffective law that won’t help solve any of the listed problems but will make you feel like you are “tough on crime” and doing something productive because you can demonize people based on their appearance and harrass them.

I would imagine that keeping drugs illegal isn’t helping the problem of Mexican drug gangs.

I guess I don’t think immigrants are that bad for society. The only difference between a legal immigrant and and an illegal immigrant is that there is an arbitrary law making one illegal and an arbitrary law making one legal. So really I guess the solution would be to make it easier for people that want to come here to do jobs that are available to them to do that legally. When people want to come here to be criminals you would deal with them the same way you treat criminals that are born here.

This idea that immigrants are bad because they are illegal is just a construct of authoritarian government to manipulate people, in the same way demonizing drug users is. I am kind of amazed at how so many people here are up in arms about the fact that these people are “illegal”. I mean, in what way do immigrants illegal or otherwise hurt society that legal citizens don’t?

Makes sense to me.

It seems in many situations we have the tendency to lay 100% of the blame on someone else. We are always innocent. It eases our sense of feeling responsible for negative circumstances and makes us feel justified.

As far as the drug wars, I am willing to bet that many of these gangs get their weapons from the states that border Mexico. Selling or possession of a firearm is strictly prohibited there. I don’t know this first-hand, but it seems most logical that many of these weapons are being smuggled from the border states into the country. In other words, they are fighting a drug war with weapons which we are selling to them. I don’t know how much that has to do with illegal immigration.

Also, besides the argument of how harmful illegal immigration is to society, no one has suggested that we take a look at the employers. If these people weren’t willingly hiring illegal immigrants, what would the problem be? Obviously they are coming here because the opportunity exists; the employment is being provided.

It might be more effective to also try monitoring the people who are providing the jobs and the weapons. Maybe we are partially responsible for some things that happen around us. Crazy, isn’t it?

Obviously I’m not suggesting that everything is our fault, but come on, let’s drop our nationalism for one second and take a good look at ourselves. We are not that innocent.

Now you’re just talking crazy, Marco. What are you, some kind of dirty socialist who hates freedom??
