Saw Hot Tuna last night, never really listened to these guys… and it was really amazing. It was an acoustic setting with Casady, Jorma (sp?) and some other fella playing the mandolin.

It was such a good show, I just wish I knew more of their music. They did a definite “White Rabbit” tease while they were talking about the other bands they had been in, which got my hopes way too high. The jams were unbelieveable (although, now that I think about it, it may have been songs and not jams, I just do not know any better).

From what I recognized, they did a sweet instrumental “When I’m 64”, an unbelievable “I Know You Rider”… and I think there was one more thing, but my mind is a little fuzzy this morning.

Only down side was before the last song of the first set… it turned into an infomercial… Trying to sell “Surrealistic Tea” and three other kinds of tea… Ehh?

But finally, I just have to thank JamBase for the phree Hot Tuna tickets!

I LOVE JORMA! The man is a genius as far as I’m concerned. I regularly visit his website to read his personal journal, listen to my Jorma/Hot Tuna shows at LEAST once a week, and generally worship the man’s playing. I’m also a HUGE Jefferson Airplane fan, though. But there is nothing better than Jorma and Jack and Barry together on stage doin’ that rag and playin that bluegrass!

Except maybe Jorma and Barry on stage doin’ the same…

I think Jorma’s Fur Peace ranch is in Ohio!

I was right…Jorma’s homebase in Pomeroy, Ohio. He gives guitar clinics at his ranch all the time. Look it up for more info, will: FUR PEACE RANCH

I never really got into the Airplane all too much… I definitely know most of their stuff, just listened to very rarely.

Now that I see the setlist, I am beginning to remember more of the show (a few drinks were consumed last night)… Hesitation Blues, and San Francisco Blues were definite highlights of the show… Most of it (to me) seemed just like blues/bluegrass (at the same time… bluesgrass??), but I am sure most of the “jams” I heard were just instrumentals named here.

Vern… do you know if they sell copies of their shows?? I didn’t see any mics or anything, and there were new signs posted all over saying “NO Audio & Video Recording, NO Cameras”… Although I saw people taping every other time I have attended the HOB here in Cleveland. I suppose instead of asking you, I could quit being lazy and look myself… but that is no fun!

Sugarmegs.org has a few Jorma shows streaming. But etree has none.

I don’t know of any source for getting a hold of Jorma shows. I’m sure there is a network of traders because I run into shows from time to time.

Everytime I’ve seen him, there were tapers…but I don’t know of any source to get his live shows.

I LOVE HOT TUNA. jack and jorma are coming for some celebration of the san fran sound with members of the dead and big brother and airplane and quicksilver. anyone know if this is a tour or just a one night stand. it’s hob cleveland, 1-29-06. any more info?

Had the distinct pleasure of seeing Hot Tuna Blues on Thursday night. Jack & Jorma with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin and GE Smith playing guitar, along with Charlie Musselwhite and Jim Lauderdale. First set acoustic second electric.

Fantastic group of musicians and very enjoyable show. I am not entirely familiar with the music of any of them, but it didn’t matter because it was just plain good. I preferred the acoustic set. Nothing against the electric because they rocked out big time, I thought the acoustic tunes were a little more distinctive whereas the electric set kind of blurred into singing between rocking blues jams. Also partly my individual tastes on that particular evening.

If they are coming round your town, I would recommend.

Heard this lineup at the Stone Pony summer stage last year and those old men can still bring it on. And although I’m not heavy into the blues, which is at the core of their music, they did a version of I Know You Rider that was jammed outrageously.

Going to see another old white guy blues musician next month in David Bromberg. Looking forward to it.
