I don’t think you can compare Mark Kozelek to Trey’s solo work unless we’re talking on a reductionist level. And even then, the songs that would be comparable are the exact ones I think Trey sucks at writing, both lyrically and musically. I love some of Trey’s stuff, but if we’re talking post-2004 nothing he’s done is anywhere near on the par of the kind of stuff Kozelek does.
Anyway, I don’t see what the other music I like has to do with my opinions on Phish and Trey’s solo work. A lot of people here like music I consider utter shit but I don’t discount their opinions on Phish because of it. Yes, even the people who like Dave Matthews.
And thanks for generalizing both me and my opinions like you always have and always will. Because god knows just because I like a certain group of bands I must be like everyone else who does. All I am is a hipster cliche and I certainly must like every band that every other hipster does, and the only reason I like them is because I want to fit in with a scene. It’s not like I also music from other genres or eras, like John Coltrane, The Minutemen, Autechre, Neil Young…nope, I’m just a silly hipster douchebag who doesn’t hold the same opinion others do on Trey’s solo stuff. Because god knows it’s unhealthy for us to argue about Phish’s music and we should all think everything they do is brilliant.
But you know, at least I’m not like all those stoner hippies who like ‘Bar 17’ and ‘Shine’, who follow jam bands around and have tripped so hard so many times that they’ve convinced themselves that String Cheese Incident was ever good. Whoops, now I’m generalizing and needlessly insulting people…
Everyone talks a lot about how we’re all fans of the band and like their music yet we all come from different backgrounds, how we’re so accepting and nice and kind to each other…but it seems like I keep experiencing the ugly side of Phish-dom, where people call someone’s cred or taste into question for whatever reason.
It’s times like this when I wish I had never come back here. It’s the same old shit. I come back, everyone says “hey, cool, Greg’s back” and then I say something that people don’t agree with and I end up in these petty bullshit arguments where people insult me because I’ve never been to show or I happen to like different kinds of music that some people don’t like or whatever.
And yes, I’m aware that you like a wide variety of music, too.
Oh well, screw it. I think I’m going to follow the breeze on out of here. I’ve learned my lesson, finally. You win, Vern. And you win, too, whoever else never liked me or I pissed off whenever.
On a side note, Deerhoof are fucking awesome and you should thank Wayne Coyne forever for exposing you to them :-*
‘Shine’ is god awful and exactly the kind of music Phish would’ve made fun of when they were starting out. I never thought I would hear anything associated with Phish that would outright embarrass me, especially since I happen to like the lighter/poppier songs like ‘The Connection’ and ‘Heavy Things’, but boy was I wrong. ‘Bar 17’ isn’t nearly as bad but it’s still forgettable and dull. But I guess these last two paragraphs invalidate anything I’ve ever said about Phish, so I’ll go now.
p.s. For the sake of clarity, I should say that this is not like my hiatus, which was my last attempt to revitalize myself. I’m done. It’s been an amazing and incredible journey. I thank you all for the love and support that you’ve shown me.
Well, the people who did, anyway.
p.p.s.
